Hot drinks that actually taste nice (no caffeine)

It's cold, I'm cold, and my default is to mainline coffee. My eye has been twitching for a week from the sheer amount of caffeine, even with decaf coffee.

Need herbal/fruit tea recommendations, or something similar that actually taste nice.

My go-to was cherry and cinnamon until it was discontinued, Yorkshire bedtime tea is another favourite but I don't always fancy it, I did drink a lot of warm lemon water until my dentist told me off for it ruining my enamel.

Not a hot squash fan, and trying to avoid super sugary stuff like hot chocolate.

Chai latte or cup a soup if you prefer savoury

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/11/2025 17:25

I drink Yogi Licorice tea with Egyptian spices - it has no caffeine but tastes delicious (hot or cold). It is t sweetened but the spices make it taste sweet, and not thin, like many herbal teas.

Chai is black tea, so has caffeine in it, I think, @alwayshungryhippo? Maybe the mixes you can buy don’t have caffeine in them.

Ginger tea then I add some cinnamon sticks and a tiny bit of honey, lovely warming drink 🫖

My favourite at this time of year is the apple and cinammon tea bags all the brands do!

dynamiccactus · 08/11/2025 17:33

When you said lemon water did you have lemon juice in it, or did you infuse the water with lemon slices? If the former, you could try the latter.

If the latter, I need to stop as I started doing it this week with lime, lemon and orange slices.

LabourOfLoathing · 08/11/2025 17:34

Lemon and ginger with a dash of honey.

muddyford · 08/11/2025 17:39

I like peppermint tea. I discovered Birchall last year and it tastes very clean and fresh.
DH like red bush tea with a splash of milk.

Linnet · 08/11/2025 17:41

I drink green tea with lemon by either twinnings or tetley. I also drink peppermint tea and butter mint tea. I drink hot chocolate occasionally too.

i haven’t tried ginger tea but it does sound nice, I’ll have to try that.

That sounds lovely, @Coffeeblanketandabookplz. Do you make the ginger tea with fresh root ginger?

ThisCanFuckOffToo · 08/11/2025 18:08

I like the pukka teas, the 3 ginger one is my favourite, or ginger and turmeric, or chai (but that has caffeine).

Ineffable23 · 08/11/2025 18:12

Another recommendation for a Polish supermarket. The Ukrainian one near me also has good fruit teas. I like their raspberry ones and I also enjoyed rosehip syrup with hot water (good source of vitamin C as well).

Emanwenym · 08/11/2025 18:14

Marmite

Middlemarch123 · 08/11/2025 19:24

Whittard’s Rose and Lychee during the day, and Dreamtime at bedtime. Both lovely.

BoredZelda · 08/11/2025 19:25

Twinings apple and cinnamon tea. Get it from Amazon.

cheapskatemum · 08/11/2025 19:30

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGeniuswhere do you buy your Yogi Licorice tea? I love it too, but can’t find anywhere local to me that sells it. I make do with Tea Pigs Peppermint & Licorice, but I tolerate the peppermint, rather than like it.

It’s possible to make a caffeine-free chai by boiling up the spices: cardamom, cinnamon, & cloves in water & leaving to steep for 5 minutes or longer, then straining into a mug.

I like Tick Tock red bush tea, particularly the vanilla flavour.

cheapskatemum · 08/11/2025 19:31

Hibiscus tea is also nice - plus a gorgeous deep pink colour.

isitmytime · 08/11/2025 19:41

Bovril with lots of salt and pepper
hot diluting juice make it stronger than you would with cold water
peppermint tea
hot water with fresh lemon

These cordials made with hot water. They're all lovely and most can be bought in sugar free versions.

Rooibos tea is my go to, it’s caffeine free, I think it’s a South Africa tea but I take bags of it with me everywhere. It doesn’t have a strong flavour of a thing in particular but I find it quite refreshing, I barely drink any other tea now.

Just be careful you don't overdo it with rooibos as I think it can do funny things to your liver.

My go to is decaff earl grey x

Ive not drunk “builders brew” T-bags for well over ten years..
I used to buy herbal and or fruit t-bags, and I admit that the cherry ones are lovely to sup..
However, I’ve cut down on purchasing these bags, unless there’s a particularly unusual one.

I find them expensive, especially if you buy bags that claim to have no microplastics..

So, I’ve just grown plants that I can’t make a brew from.

Mint
Basil
Sage
Thyme
Rosamary
Lemon Balm
Fig Leaf
Bay Leaf
Pine Needle
and there’s loads more that I’d like to try.
Obviously you’ll need to look up the pros and cons of consuming whatever tea you choose, as they may have adverse effects on those with certain health conditions or of course in pregnancy, one needs extra care.

Another hot comforting drink is “Golden Milk”, which is basically turmeric… I have mine in plant milk, and there are basic recipes, but also variations where eg cinnamon can be a nice addition in the colder months.
For me, the golden milk, is the most comforting, the teas are mostly refreshing, even tho it’s a warm drink.

with ALL of the above, I sweeten with raw unprocessed honey, but do ensure that the drink is cool enough to drink before adding, else you’ll probably destroy the benefits of the raw honey with a too hot liquid.

If you are not a fan of honey, then you can drink it as hot as you are comfortable with.

Have fun experimenting, there’s lots of options I’ve probably never heard of yet.

PS in winter, I find the Thyme tea particularly helpful to make breathing easier when of you get blocked airways.
i Aldo brew it in a wider cup, so that I can breathe in the Thyme aroma= a double benefit 🤣

Is that literally just thyme and hot water to make it? You must have a wonderful garden. My growing skills are entry level at best!

The latter sadly, but I did drink a LOT.

I drink the Nescafe Mocha sachets. They've got a really low caffeine content. But are warming and comforting.
