A white wine that actually tastes nice ??

I don’t like getting drunk , I like a little buzz but that’s it.

I used to always drink Prosecco or pinot Grigio .. but always found them a bit bitter or a nasty aftertaste. I once went to a wedding and tasted a white wine that was so smooth , I had no wine headache the next day and I didn’t feel the need to gulp it to get drunk! It was just relaxing but I don’t know what it was ?’
I used to always drink to get drunk too. As I’ve got older , I realise I just want to be one of those that relaxes with a glass of wine with some nice food , not getting drunk.

I think I need to veer away from cheaper wines … but at the same time I don’t want to be spending loads.

Im off to M and S today for some nice food for tonight . Can anyone recommend a nice white wine? I know nothing about wine ! I’ve always just had a house white when I’m out or stuck to pinot or prosecco. Usually the cheaper ones too.

I know nothing about wine but I like Mondelli Pinot Grigio which is less than a fiver. It doesn't have the bitter aftertaste or yuck moment I get with most other white wines

WingBingo · 08/11/2025 14:17

Cremante! It’s halfway between Prosecco and champagne. Delicious and £10 a bottle in M&S

A sommelier once told me you can’t go far wrong with a Picpoul when choosing a white wine. We love it but obviously everyone’s palette is different

I don't like fizzy wines but do like a nice dry white. Gavi is nice :)

I think you have to try a few to see what you like. And unfortunately try buying wine that’s a little more expensive (not being snobby). If you like Pinot Grigio try a slightly fancier one, or a Sauvignon Blanc. They’re both quite dry. For something a little smoother, maybe a Chardonnay? I’m no huge expert but I know what I like (I’m defo a SB drinker). I’ve never bought wine from m&s so don’t know what they stock, but they’re bound to have a good selection.
Enjoy!

I’ve never had a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc I didn’t like…. Probably looking at £12+ but well worth it.

DancingQueen2018 · 08/11/2025 14:24

I like a vouvray/viognier - M&S do a very good one. It’s a bit sweeter I think about £10 a bottle?

menopausalmare · 08/11/2025 14:26

Good old Barefoot Pinot Grigio suits my uncultured palate.

Westfacing · 08/11/2025 14:27

I like Picpoul or a white Rioja.

Melassa · 08/11/2025 14:27

It depends on your budget. More expensive wine is less likely to give you a headache. Also, some whites need to be chilled more than others.

Ones I like include
vermentino
pouilly fuissé
pouilly fumé
chardonnay (but avoid the cheap ones)
passerina
pecorino
Gewurtztraminer -although it does have a more flowery taste, not like pinot Grigio at all, but very pleasant in its own way.

if you want fizzy then crémant de Bourgogne is nice, closer to champagne than prosecco. Despite living in the land of prosecco I actually prefer Champagne.

LeafyMcLeafFace · 08/11/2025 14:29

I can’t drink at the moment, god I miss a glass of really cold cloudy bay. 😢

Melassa · 08/11/2025 14:29

And Gavi, as someone mentioned up thread.

PistachioTiramisu · 08/11/2025 14:31

If you like dry white wine, may I suggest M&S Muscadet - £8 - it tastes lovely and fresh and is nice for drinking as a drink as well as with food.

If you would like something a little smoother/fruitier, try Sainsbury's Gruner Veltliner - about £9.

My favourite wine is Sancerre, but this is getting into the more expensive realm - a good one would be at least £15,

MinnieMountain · 08/11/2025 14:32

White Bordeaux. I like Mouton Cadet which Ocado has, so your local M&S might.

FletchFan · 08/11/2025 14:33

I'm a cheap Chardonnay girl. My favourites are the honeycomb M&S one, Gallo, Jam Shed or 19 Crimes.

Tintackedsea · 08/11/2025 14:35

I like pecorino. I don’t like many white wines but if I see that I have it.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 08/11/2025 14:39

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand is a light white wine.
Reisling is very refreshing. Don't buy the cheap stuff.

JoyintheMorning · 08/11/2025 14:42

The Germanic types like Hock or Gewürztraminer are often slightly lower alcohol.
I agree with poster who mentioned the Cremants.
My favourite special White at about £15/16 is Macon Village.

ImDuranDuran · 08/11/2025 14:45

When people are saying ‘don’t buy cheap’ are we talking £10+ or £20+ a bottle?

OP can you report back tomorrow? You sound a lot like me Grin

skyeisthelimit · 08/11/2025 14:46

Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc is nice. It is around £12 but is often on offer.

soupyspoon · 08/11/2025 14:46

A white Rioja for me and theres a huge difference for me in new world and old world. I never choose NZ, Aus, South American, always Italian, French, Spanish Portuguese, French chardonnay for example, never new world.

I find the new world wines, very metallic, bitter, harsh. I have no idea why, Ive tested it out several times but its always the same. Its the same grape but completely different.

osloslow · 08/11/2025 14:47

Champagne. Every time. Rarely get a hangover, or any sort of reflux. Something to do with a second fermentation process, less sulphites and impurities in it

RosesAndHellebores · 08/11/2025 14:49

I don't think a mid range Chablis can be beaten: £15ish gets a reasonable one.

Same.

Try a pinot gris, something like this. I do think if you pay a bit more you get a nicer wine.
