A white wine that actually tastes nice ??

I don’t like getting drunk , I like a little buzz but that’s it.

I used to always drink Prosecco or pinot Grigio .. but always found them a bit bitter or a nasty aftertaste. I once went to a wedding and tasted a white wine that was so smooth , I had no wine headache the next day and I didn’t feel the need to gulp it to get drunk! It was just relaxing but I don’t know what it was ?’
I used to always drink to get drunk too. As I’ve got older , I realise I just want to be one of those that relaxes with a glass of wine with some nice food , not getting drunk.

I think I need to veer away from cheaper wines … but at the same time I don’t want to be spending loads.

Im off to M and S today for some nice food for tonight . Can anyone recommend a nice white wine? I know nothing about wine ! I’ve always just had a house white when I’m out or stuck to pinot or prosecco. Usually the cheaper ones too.

Gavi
or if you want sparkling then Cremant

For clarity (hic !) Margaret River do not make Albariño . But they were always my in my Christmas treat box, mainly red.

I’m a huge fan of Portuguese vinho verde. Drink it really chilled & it has a fresh almost sparkle to it. Not the Mose sophisticate wine you’ll ever taste but great for social drinking. It’s generally ( but you need to check each brand) only around 9% proof which suits me perfectly as the lower alcohol means I don’t get the hangovers. Tesco & Aldi sell it and it’s around £5 a bottle. Sainsbo’s do a Taste the Differnce one which is £7.50 too ( they do a cheaper standard one but weirdly that is 11%).

Another vote for New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. I like Brancott Estate, Tinpot Hut and Easy Tiger

I find Gewürztraminer very drinkable. It's at the sweeter end of whites.

Rina66 · 08/11/2025 21:41

Pouilly-Fuissé or Gewürztraminer

Tana433 · 08/11/2025 21:42

I drink Asti from Tesco. £5 a bottle. Yes,it is quite sweet but i really like it.

Silvercoconut · 08/11/2025 21:45

Can't go wrong with a good Pecorino. I'm Italian, I know!

Blahdiblahblahr · 08/11/2025 21:46

If you aren’t much of a wine drinker I’d suggest starting with Oyster Bay. See if you like it, most people do.

Otherwise californian chardonnay is also a crowd pleaser but is expensive if you’re not sure you’ll like it!

I came on here to say this one! It's never failed me! Such a nice wine

NewGirlInTown · 08/11/2025 21:56

Chablis is beautiful.
Spend more, OP. Quality rather than quantity.

Big fan of NewZealand wine, Villa Maria is nice but generally around £10/11a bottle, most of the Malbrough ones taste good

dementedpixie · 08/11/2025 22:02

I like this white malbec

The Germanic types like Hock or Gewürztraminer are often slightly lower alcohol.
I agree with poster who mentioned the Cremants.
My favourite special White at about £15/16 is Macon Village.

Yes good point about the abv.

I love a Gewürztraminer with a spiced meal - it goes very nicely.

M&S Classic no5 Chenin Blanc (red top)
Waitrose Viognier
Sainsburys Languedoc taste the difference. Tesco/Co-op Vieille Ferme (pic of chickens on label). All scrummy and affordable. If I want bubbly then Cremant.

Jumi juma - Moldovian Chardonnay Riesling blend. Smooth, not too sweet, not too dry. The perfect drinking wine.

Or I am very partial to The Horologist, a new Zealand Sav. Very fresh and crisp without the heartburn!

I have discovered wine this year as it was always something I could take or leave before, however I now have a few faves. Still can't stand a red wine though!

A Sancerre is my favourite, but I also enjoy a cloudy bay SB, pouilly fumee and Chablis. For fizz, you can’t go wrong with a Cremant de Bourgogne
