A white wine that actually tastes nice ??

I don’t like getting drunk , I like a little buzz but that’s it.

I used to always drink Prosecco or pinot Grigio .. but always found them a bit bitter or a nasty aftertaste. I once went to a wedding and tasted a white wine that was so smooth , I had no wine headache the next day and I didn’t feel the need to gulp it to get drunk! It was just relaxing but I don’t know what it was ?’
I used to always drink to get drunk too. As I’ve got older , I realise I just want to be one of those that relaxes with a glass of wine with some nice food , not getting drunk.

I think I need to veer away from cheaper wines … but at the same time I don’t want to be spending loads.

Im off to M and S today for some nice food for tonight . Can anyone recommend a nice white wine? I know nothing about wine ! I’ve always just had a house white when I’m out or stuck to pinot or prosecco. Usually the cheaper ones too.

Pecorino is a nice white

mamagogo1 · 08/11/2025 14:51

Nip into Lidl, have great wines in their wine tour selection, look for the scores, independently assessed. There’s a great wine, Viognier we’ve had recently. For smoother though often cheaper is what you will want oddly, more expensive tends to be more complex. For easy drinking their Riesling is quaffable

Riesling
Gewürztraminer or just Traminer

Buy European! Other wines are rubbish in comparison and the most important thing is the grape not the brand.
Everyone likes different wines but my favourites are Viognier, Chardonnay and Muscadet but I usually like any Rhone valley white and most Spanish Albariños.
For cheap but good wines I recommend Aldi over the other supermarkets as you can still get a good wines for under £7. I have rarely bought a good wine from Tesco or Morrisons even though they charge a fortune.
I prefer to buy my wine direct from the (French) vineyard but I don’t get to France that often these days so have to make do with Aldi 😒

Seconding New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, Villa Maria and Oyster Bay are not too expensive but very nice and crisp

FenceBooksCycle · 08/11/2025 20:58

Try picpoul de pinet

laesosalt · 08/11/2025 21:00

I’ve never had a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc I didn’t like…. Probably looking at £12+ but well worth it.

I like the Marlborough Estates one especially.

A white Rioja for me and theres a huge difference for me in new world and old world. I never choose NZ, Aus, South American, always Italian, French, Spanish Portuguese, French chardonnay for example, never new world.

I find the new world wines, very metallic, bitter, harsh. I have no idea why, Ive tested it out several times but its always the same. Its the same grape but completely different.

I’m the same. I find new world wines too acidic.

You need Sauvingon Blanc.Far superior to pinot grigio.Preferably Marlbrough new Zealand.Villa Maria do a nice one.

RuncibleSpoons · 08/11/2025 21:09

We’re enjoying a Dog Point Sauvignon. From majestic, I think.

I like most M&S sauvignon blancs, Gavi and Picpoul.

CharnwoodFire · 08/11/2025 21:14

I don't like that bitter aftertaste either.
I really like this one - it doesn't make me gag/shiver. Difficult to get though x

A decent Chablis cant be beaten

VegQueen · 08/11/2025 21:15

You need to investigate the type of wine you like - it’s not just about good or bad it just depends on your own taste. I like dry crisp white wine and pinot Grigio is ok in a pinch if not many other options but my go tos are Gavi, Picpoul, Albariño, Vinho Verde, and my ultimate favourite is a dry Riesling.

Gavi is generally on the more expensive side but I find pretty consistently good.

k1233 · 08/11/2025 21:16

I prefer reds but if I have to drink a white I look for an unwooded Chardonnay. The unwooded gets rid of the icky taste.

Personally for summer, I don't mind a moscato - pretty much lolly water, tends to be sweet with low alcohol level.

agree with this.

Although I am rather partial to a Viognier too. Majestic do a lovely one for about £11/bottle. That is my go-to ordinary 'every day' wine.

crackofdoom · 08/11/2025 21:21

I find most white wines too acidic, but I do like a lot of Italian whites, they tend to be fruitier. Loire Valley whites are really good, too.

My fave wine is........

I ❤wine.

I do love these wines. They're reasonably priced too. Most stores (that sell alcohol) sell them.

I went teetotal a year and a half ago, but this was my fave! Smile

I heart wines - Great tasting wines whatever the occasion!

Fun-loving, accessible range of everyone's favourite wines. Great tasting for you to enjoy, whatever the occasion!

Figgygal · 08/11/2025 21:23

I enjoy:
Gavi
Muscadet
Rioja blanca

SleepingisanArt · 08/11/2025 21:25

I primarily drink organic wine which is bottled by the vineyard. Sounds snobby but after years in the industry I've had to taste a lot of wine!

Sauvignon from Chile is in my opinion much nicer than from NZ - it has a nicer citrus note, very clean and crisp. Chardonnay is probably what you found bitter in champagne so I wouldn't recommend it as a grape on its own. Viognier is lovely, smooth and fruity but not sweet. Pecorino is elegant, Albarino is similar in flavour both easy to drink with or without food!

Avoid Californian wines as they are too sweet for the British palette.

If you have one find an independent wine merchant who'll let you taste wines. I also think Majestic do tastings - its a cheaper way of finding out what you like. Good luck and enjoy finding what you enjoy - quality is better than quantity!

(I don't like Gavi whatever the price and avoid Chardonnay too. I drink Champagne with a lower ratio of Chardonnay to Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier or an English Sparkling like Ashling Park.)

SunnyViper · 08/11/2025 21:26

Not a fan of any whites really. I’ll tolerate dry ones if very cold😂

Aintgointogoa · 08/11/2025 21:27

@LeafyMcLeafFace oh my god a Cloudy Bay !! Oyster Bay solid choice. Margaret River (Aus) Albariño, swoon. Yes Gavi and PICPOUL ..be still my beating heart ....ooh Pinot Gris.....mmmmm...one supermarket here had Pecorino on offer for a month or so and I never missed out on it. Then it disappeared. I don't personally like fruity / sweeter wine so you need to hone in on your personal preference. (pours best of a bad bunch glass Sauv Blanc and dreams.....) 🍷
