How do you do Ikea?

We're on our way to Ikea for the first time in ages - we need shelves for ds' room.

DH thinks we're going straight to the shelves, then the cafe then leaving.

Me and DS have other plans and will be following the arrows, opening all the drawers in the kitchens, 'scaring each other' with roars from the stuffed animals (ds is 13, I may be exaggerating this) etc.

DH will be livid until we get to the mugs etc where I'll catch him touching up the glasswear

How do you do Ikea?

Love walking round ikea !!! End up spending a fortune though

Click and collect. Absolutely hate the place, especially on weekends when it’s full of people making a day out of it.

I mean… he won’t actually be “livid” will he?!

how far is your journey there?

Andsomemore · 08/11/2025 12:30

I “do” ikea online 🤷‍♀️

No, he's lovely. He'll tut a lot until he gets to the meatballs though. 25 minutes ish

We only live 10 mins from one so often it’s straight to the thing or department I want, no wandering around.

Needmorelego · 08/11/2025 12:32

If just getting shelves and if I knew exactly which ones I wanted I would just order online 😂

Sounds lovely 🤔

Generally miss out the furniture and take the shortcut to start in kitchens and then walk all the way round from there. However I do know all the shortcuts if I need something specific and don’t have time to walk all the way round.

The visit will always include meatballs - either in the cafe or picking up a packet to take home.

I love IKEA 😊

Spend ages in the kid section, wander around the kitchen bit touching everything, stuff down meatballs, leave exhausted with a headache wishing we hadn't gone in the first place. Any purchases then sit in the spare room unassembled for a few months.

Mathsdebator · 08/11/2025 15:01

Just out! Small bicker over the shelves. Made up over meat balls!

Got a lamp for the bedroom, some hangers, shelves, meatballs for home, storage boxes for ds' new wardrobe. Successful!

Arrive early doors. Have Ikea card cheapo breakfast and free coffee. Whizz round display level. Get trolley, do showroom. Pay and put stuff in car. Go back for meatballs. Lock at list and see what I've forgotten, nip back and get it along with some frozen meatballs. Job done.

Mathsdebator · 08/11/2025 15:26

I was a bit confused about the coffee - got my cup, till lady asked what hot drink I wanted. Then gave me a QR code for the machine! Didn't have them last time I was in!

I get lost in Ikea so I only do it online now.

UpMyself · 08/11/2025 15:32

I go round everything, making a note of what I fancy.
Go for a much needed coffee (and the loo).
Go back in, whizz to the section where whatever I went in for, pop into the kitchen area and get the poly bags that ae mega useful for all sorts of things, browse bargain corner. Pay. Go home.

FIaps · 08/11/2025 15:37

We only ever go on a weekday evening because its much quieter than weekends. We go round everything, usually spend more than we intended, and then get a hotdog or cinnamon bun from the food section at the end.

UpMyself · 08/11/2025 15:38

Forgot to say - I go in the week, not the weekend.

museumum · 08/11/2025 15:40

I do it alone. Late on a weekday evening.

RedRiverShore5 · 08/11/2025 15:40

I ordered the last lot online as I couldn't face it, it's a bit of a drive anyway

theclassroom · 08/11/2025 15:42

Me and DH make an ordeal of it. At least 1h30m or more looking at everything, picking up things we didn’t come in for and having ‘if we were rich’ conversations! And then maybe 30 minutes getting food.
