Half board or AI?

DP and I need to be in a Spanish holiday resort next weekend. We have some time and can make a week of it.

By far the cheapest way to do it is to book a package and being the snob I am I'd planned to book hotel and flights seperately, on a room only /B&B basis.

DP has found lots of deals where you can upgrade from B&B to HB for about £30 each for the week and to AI for an additional £50 pp pw.

We wouldn't spend much time in the hotel and we're not big drinkers to benefit, but even things like coffee and soft drinks add up when you're away.

Even if the food is terrible and we only eat there a couple of times we'd be better off taking the HB, and on that basis maybe it's better to go AI and have drinks with dinner too?

Or not.

The only reason I'm considering it is becuase it's out of season.

It's very much a budget extra holiday for us. We need to be there for the weekend, this a few days to mooch around and have lots of sex It's not somewhere I'd choose to go ordinarily, but a 4* hotel AI for £400 including flights.....

Edited for a ridiculous number of typos.

Ordinarily I'd say go HB because the extra for AI is inflated to cater for those who do it for the alcohol. However that's so cheap you might as well for £100

DH and I go HB and put drinks or lunches on the bill, it's usually about £300 . for a week whereas the difference for AI is more like £700.

For £50 AI because why not.

Because it's out of season I'd go AI. DH and I did that last week when we were away because we suspected as it was at the end of the season a lot of the local restaurants would have closed, and we were right.

I would go AI as it’s so cheap however I would check what would be included as sometimes not all drinks are included and for some you have to pay just half price.

rookiemere · 07/11/2025 16:46

I would check what reviews say about the food and drink.
Unless the food is really good AI can get old very quickly. However it is cheap to upgrade even if you do go out sometimes.

I’d upgrade, even if you just a couple of dinners, or the odd lunch at the hotel you would at least break even. Do read the reviews though in case it’s too cheap and cheerful for your taste.
