Parking in York

Hi, bit of a random one but I'm driving into York tomorrow and I have no idea where to park. Qparks seems to be fully booked for pre booking. Can anyone local advise please?

Thanks

I always do park and ride when I go to York. I park at the designer outlet (but I think there are a couple of others too) - plenty of free parking and frequent buses into the city centre. Much less stressful than driving into the city.

wizzler · 07/11/2025 11:12

Agree with @NannyR the park and rides are excellent .. buses very frequent and good value. I use the one at Acomb or the one on Hull Road.

honeylou42 · 07/11/2025 11:14

Monk bar car park is pretty good and close to the shops

Ohmygodthepain · 07/11/2025 11:15

Park and Ride. York is mental by car.

Beekman · 07/11/2025 11:16

Another vote for the park and ride. Just check what time the last bus is because it can be pretty early.

Queenage · 07/11/2025 11:17

It’s 17.50 for 4 hours in all the car parks so I’d do park n ride

Nearly50omg · 07/11/2025 11:21

Coppergate car park is fantastic position right in the centre next to the Viking museum and Fenwick etc and never full

Hoppinggreen · 07/11/2025 11:22

The Barbican is pretty good and if you are coming from the west you don't need to try and get across York

IsntItDarkOut · 07/11/2025 11:23

We go all the time. The park and ride has been a game changer for us. It’s an excellent and cheap service.

Haveyoubrushedyourteeth · 07/11/2025 11:23

It depends on when you're arriving, unless its first thing I'd agree with the above and do park and ride.

If you are there bright and early my go to car park is the one thats opposite York St John university (not on the Lord Mayor's walk side, the one if you're coming from the hospital direction- it'll be on your right). If thats full pull out, turning right then get in the left hand lane at the traffic lights which will take you down Lord Mayor's Walk and theres another sign posted one on your left down there.

Badbadbunny · 07/11/2025 11:26

Morrisons (Foss Island) is where we always park. You pay via an app and can choose how many hours you want to stay. Far cheaper than council car parks, always plenty of spaces, and a very easy walk as just a few minutes outside the city walls.

DaisyDukesAuntie · 07/11/2025 11:26

Parking in York is very expensive, park and ride recommend

DuchessofStaffordshire · 07/11/2025 11:42

Park and ride every time. Much less hassle, cheap and reduces unnecessary traffic in the city

IggyAce · 07/11/2025 11:44

I always park and ride because it’s easier and cheaper. Which one you use will depend where you are driving from.

loveawineloveacrisp · 07/11/2025 15:04

Thanks I think I'll go with park & ride. Coming at lunchtime and staying til 5ish so I don't imagine that'll be after last bus time?

Having had my elderly dad sound off about a recent trip into York (road works everywhere!!) I would wholeheartedly recommend park and ride too.

IsntItDarkOut · 07/11/2025 16:53

It runs quite late now. It might be busy around 5 as lots of people use it for work.

Brightbluesomething · 07/11/2025 17:46

Don’t even attempt to park in York. The park and ride will still be open at 5 but the bus back there will take longer as traffic will be utter chaos at that time.

Mrsbadger77 · 07/11/2025 17:49

We parked at Morrisons - you need the ringo app but it was £8.50 for 24 hours not sure what the price is for less time but it's a good spot.

GoodNamesOnly · 07/11/2025 17:58

I went recently and parked near Wetherspoons near the centre. I can't remember the name of the car park, but it was huge, very quiet on a Saturday and (to me) very expensive. I didn't actually find driving in the city stressful, compared to the bigger city I live in, where you have to make decisions very fast as cars are coming at you! As a visitor, I quite liked the (congested) slower pace of life and having time to think which lane to be in. I can imagine it is annoying if you live there.

Will try the park and ride next time.

Livingmagicallyagain · 07/11/2025 18:08

We always park in Castle Car Park. Never had any issues. Not hugely cheap but with young kids we need the car close by. Plus not hugely more expensive than paying park and ride (we usually have three adults in the car).

OldGothsFadeToGrey · 07/11/2025 18:31

Get there early and park at the castle car park.

@Livingmagicallyagain never had an issue either and not hard to get in and out of York that way.

melissasummerfield · 07/11/2025 18:41

Marygate is a good one as you can walk through the grounds into town

DonewhatIcando · 07/11/2025 19:45

I live in York.
Definitely Park and Ride but I'd use Askham Bar, it's nearer to town than the Designer outlet one and the traffic won't be as bad, assuming you're coming in on the A64 Askham Bar is easy to find

Zoopet · 07/11/2025 21:00

Went to the Railway museum today in York and the parking was horrendous.
Multiple roads shut, insane traffic and the station car park closed.
We managed to eventually find a space in the old railway shed on a much reduced size car park next to the station.
The disabled bays were completely full of work vans.
Then had a long walk from the car park around a very poorly signposted route to the railway museum which took us around the main building on a large detour.
Not much fun when you are disabled.
No idea how people in wheelchairs manage.
Spoke to the museum staff who said they had to constantly field complaints about the poor signage and lack of information/ access.
In orer to access their extremely quiet museum car park, you would have to drive all the way back out of York and approach it from the other direction as all other roads leading to the museum were shut.
I am amazed such chaos is allowed in a major city!
York City Council sort your shit out!
In response to your op I would strongly suggest that you take your custom elsewhere.
York doesn't deserve it.
