Help a MN'er out - random niggling life problems we need to sort out but aren't' worth their own thread.

A supportive thread for women who have lots of shit to do. Below are some issues that pop into my head at random inconvenient times that I really need to sort out.

Things I need to sort out but I'm not quite sure about.

  1. I really want to cancel my TV licence, but I'm unsure about the rules around this now. It used to be virtually impossible to do but now many are. What do I need to know?
  2. My dentist has been hassling me for years to get an electric toothbrush - I had one but it rattled my brain so I got rid. A few weeks ago I gave in and bought another one - Superdrug own brand. About £40 on offer. IT CUTS MY LIP!! This cant be right? there seems to be a gap between the vibrating head and if it touches my lip it cuts me. Even if I am really careful it does this. Its this faulty? Is this a normal hazzard when using electric toothbrushes? Its probably too late for a refund but is it worth buying another one?
  3. Kitchen sink is starting to be slow draining - what do I do that doesn't involve a plumber.
  4. Newish tyre - dramatically lost air pressure. I topped it up thinking I had a slow leak & it seems to be fine 2 weeks later. Is it?

Let me know if you have any random issues we can support with.

My fridge (leiber) has a small drain at the back which is blocked. I’ve stuck a few things in to free blockage such a screwdriver and wooden skewer but it needs to be something that bends!

It’s happened before but not for a while and I managed to free blockage last time… meanwhile there is water gathering in my salad drawer and on the floor.

I’m at work, about to go home for lunch and expect a pool of water waiting for me in the kitchen sigh.

I used a cable tie yesterday on mine. It’s long thin and flexible. Worked well.

EmeraldRoulette · 06/11/2025 17:27

@singthing I wouldn't do that with the drain unblocker

If a neighbour can smell it as well, it sounds like something is just passing by and occasionally giving a smell. Unless the culprit is found, there's not really anything you can do inside - you could get some freshener granules to put around it.

Not read the full thread, but you can buy a plumber’s snake which is a twisty thing which goes down the sink and the twisting motion clears the blockage. It’s very long (you basically unroll it using a handle into the pipes) so if the drain unblocker or a plunger doesn’t work, you can clear it without calling a plumber. I undid the piping at the u-bend and started there with it, but you can probably unscrew the plug cover thing and put it down the sink as it goes around bends. You can buy them in B&Q.

Rub neat washing up liquid into the grease stain. Leave it to absorb then wash as normal. Hey presto no stain.

Having been sucked down the UPF rabbit hole this summer in an attempt to stop a really serious flare of my autoimmune condition, my attention has now been diverted to microplastics.

I can’t bear the smell of cling film and look at the roll with deep suspicion. Am I sprinkling my food with microplastics each time I use it?

So my niggly question is what are the alternatives to cover a plate of food going into the fridge? And what can I use to store food in the freezer that doesn’t involve plastic boxes and lids.

I have tried Beeswax covers for the fridge dilemma but they dont feel very hygenic. Does anyone have better ideas?

I put a plate on top of food in a bowl as a lid. I do use plastic boxes for the freezer though...

Is it picking your birthday up from Facebook?

Nope, just had a look and that's also private to me. Any other ideas welcome, it makes me look so self centred and lacking in tech ability (although that last is clearly true).

I have no idea if my birthday pops up anywhere.

but I do seem to have everyone’s birthday multiplying everywhere.

my calanders on the phone (phone, outlook x2 work ones, gmail x 3, etc) are crazy out of control & I feel powerless in the face of them.

I did mi e with a bamboo skewer for the bbq. Makes sure you soak it in water first do it’s bendy.

@RobinEllacotStrike just to say you can still listen to BBC radio even if you don’t have a TV licence!

I love this thread and wonder if anyone can help me solve my other current issue.

My washer dryer is causing a loud slamming noise in my pipes when filling. It sounds like it is shutting off the water supply far too sharply. That in turn seems to be upsetting my water cylinder.

Does anyone have any ideas how to stop it water snatching so aggressively.

Have you tried saying no very firmly ? If that fails smack it on the nose with a rolled up news paper.

So couldn't help it 🤣🤣🤣🤣

PersisFord · 06/11/2025 19:50

What a great idea for a thread! I also have a leaky fridge but it doesn't have a little drainage hole, just sort of vents. Is there something I'm missing?

I agree about washing up.liquid for greasy stains - you have to rub it in until it feels like jelly. I've got a brilliant book of how to get out stains.

RobinEllacotStrike · 05/11/2025 13:58

Wow Luigi is a beast - you say it sucks stuff up? So the stuff blocking the drain comes up not down? (not much plunging experience here)
I almost feel like this thread should move to sporners corner ...

Does anybody want me to take some pictures??
My shower has been draining slowly since daughter with long hair used it a few times………..
You will be shocked, stunned and a little surprised I suspect.
Edit- spelling.

SwirlyShirly · 06/11/2025 20:06

I have a niggling lower UTI that is making me quite uncomfortable. I need to go and get some antibiotics but resent paying like £25 when I already pay for my prescriptions every month 😒 I hoped it would go away by itself.

It is uncomfortable but it almost always clears on it's own - antibiotics take 24-48h to kick in, by which time it should be clearing up anyway. So I'd save the money, unless the symptoms persist

Thank you for all the suggestions as to how to ditch the clingfilm and remove microplastics from my food environment.

I have just ordered a selection of glass storage boxes and put my remaining plastic boxes out in the shed to store nails, screws and other bits of tat.

It feels wasteful and not very environmentally friendly, but the cling film will be assigned to the recycling bin. The smell of it is vile and I don’t want it in my body.

I like the ikea 365 ones. They come in useful sizes and can go, lid-less into microwaves and ovens

JacknDiane · 06/11/2025 20:56

My tap drips in the bathroom sink. Its an enclosed tap, I mean its all one unit, not a wee bit underneath you can screw out.
Can anyone advise please?

Depending on how many regular prescriptions you need it’s possible to save money with a Prescription Prepayment Certificate.
PPC costs £32.05 for 3 months or £114.50 for 12 months, and covers all your NHS prescriptions.

Yes that’s what I have got - but have to pay £23 for anti biotic from boots. I have the school run tomorrow and don’t stand a chance of getting a doctor appt so I’ve got no choice really. I’m miserable and uncomfortable so I suppose it will be £23 well spent.

Doctors surgeries are obligated to offer an online option now and to get back to you by the end of the day. Might that do the job?
