Help a MN'er out - random niggling life problems we need to sort out but aren't' worth their own thread.

A supportive thread for women who have lots of shit to do. Below are some issues that pop into my head at random inconvenient times that I really need to sort out.

Things I need to sort out but I'm not quite sure about.

  1. I really want to cancel my TV licence, but I'm unsure about the rules around this now. It used to be virtually impossible to do but now many are. What do I need to know?
  2. My dentist has been hassling me for years to get an electric toothbrush - I had one but it rattled my brain so I got rid. A few weeks ago I gave in and bought another one - Superdrug own brand. About £40 on offer. IT CUTS MY LIP!! This cant be right? there seems to be a gap between the vibrating head and if it touches my lip it cuts me. Even if I am really careful it does this. Its this faulty? Is this a normal hazzard when using electric toothbrushes? Its probably too late for a refund but is it worth buying another one?
  3. Kitchen sink is starting to be slow draining - what do I do that doesn't involve a plumber.
  4. Newish tyre - dramatically lost air pressure. I topped it up thinking I had a slow leak & it seems to be fine 2 weeks later. Is it?

Let me know if you have any random issues we can support with.

HG drain cleaner is very effective for blocked or slow drains and is available on Amazon.

HELP please - one of my AirPods isnt working. I've done all the stuff about forgetting them, repairing etc. They are both fully charged, as is the case. There is no visible gunk in the non-working one. The iPhone is definitely set to balanced sound so should be coming out of both ears. Any suggestions anyone?

Q: What do I do with all my furniture while the new floor is being laid

Anyone else just itching to resurrect the carpet fitter thread now? 😅

directions please 🙏🏼😁

how annoying - and also expensive.

I'm amazed at how resiliant airpods are - DD's have been though the wash many times & are perfectly ok afterwards.

(thats not fix it advice BTW)

The flooring fitting people will move a couple of simple but awkward things like sofas. They will not be impressed if there are multiple tables, cupboards etc though.

For drains you want Mr Muscle sink unblocker. It's fantastic stuff, especially if you leave it overnight. I always have some in, my kids have long hair and it's a pain 😂 They have a general one which is good for bathrooms, and a kitchen-specific one which is more effective on grease.

If you have tricky/sticky/broken locks and/or handles on your UPVC windows you can simply switch out the handles.

New ones can be bought online for £10 or less and it takes a few minutes to switch them over. No trade required.

Many thanks to a woman on Insta for this magical revelation.

do you have a link? my mum has lost all the keys to her window handles, if i can just switch them out she will be able to close the ones that are stuck open and (finally) open the ones that are stuck closed!

FeliciaFancybottom · 05/11/2025 13:14

Screwfix do window handles. Apologies, I'm trying to add a link but it's not working.

wakeboarder · 05/11/2025 13:21

For some reason I can't download things on my android tablet anymore, I used to be able to 🤷‍♀️ any ideas on this? I'm not very technical so very specific instructions maybe required 😂

I can’t as it will just get resurrected again and I couldn’t live with myself. Maybe someone else would like to take on the guilt 😉

so annoying - my fridge has a little plastic thing that sticks in that hole & sometimes I use rolled up kitchen roll to have a week poke around..

Pipe cleaners will be better - good luck!

You can still get pipe cleaners in the crafts section of mainstream shops.

I can’t recommend this highly enough.
Dont bother with tiny plungers - use this.
Ive had mine for 4 years and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever bought.
It sucks up some pretty horrific stuff but its saved me a fortune in ‘sink unblockers’ and plumbers.

Have you checked your space/storage capacity? Might be full up.

I don't have android so sadly no more specific info from me.

Thank you @RobinEllacotStrike @Eyesopenwideawake @squashyhat you reminded me that I kept some of the crafting stuff from when dc were little (now late teens!Blush) and I did indeed have some pipe cleaners at the bottom of the box. A nice bright turquoise one did the job and by the time I got back from a short dog walk, it had drained! Smile

i have a load of flexible, various sized, bristle brushes for cleaning things like reusable straws. I was about to recommend that when i saw you'd fixed it.

Lifesyoungdream · 05/11/2025 13:53

I find with electric toothbrushes that you don’t use it like a manual one.
I put mine on a sensitive setting then hold it and let it do the work without you brushing it up and down. If that makes sense.

Wow Luigi is a beast - you say it sucks stuff up? So the stuff blocking the drain comes up not down? (not much plunging experience here)
I almost feel like this thread should move to sporners corner ...

Excellent idea as these will be more substanstial that a pipe cleaner - though pipe cleaners can be folded etc.

do you put toothpast onto the brush? Daft question but I do expect mine to fly off before I've got the brush in my mouth.

OP posts:
cornbunting · 05/11/2025 14:02

You put the brush (with toothpaste) in your mouth before you turn the brush on 🙂
