A supportive thread for women who have lots of shit to do. Below are some issues that pop into my head at random inconvenient times that I really need to sort out.

Things I need to sort out but I'm not quite sure about.

  1. I really want to cancel my TV licence, but I'm unsure about the rules around this now. It used to be virtually impossible to do but now many are. What do I need to know?
  2. My dentist has been hassling me for years to get an electric toothbrush - I had one but it rattled my brain so I got rid. A few weeks ago I gave in and bought another one - Superdrug own brand. About £40 on offer. IT CUTS MY LIP!! This cant be right? there seems to be a gap between the vibrating head and if it touches my lip it cuts me. Even if I am really careful it does this. Its this faulty? Is this a normal hazzard when using electric toothbrushes? Its probably too late for a refund but is it worth buying another one?
  3. Kitchen sink is starting to be slow draining - what do I do that doesn't involve a plumber.
  4. Newish tyre - dramatically lost air pressure. I topped it up thinking I had a slow leak & it seems to be fine 2 weeks later. Is it?

Let me know if you have any random issues we can support with.

And if you have a grease stain on an item of clothing that wasn't soaked right away, is there ever any hope of getting it out?!

@Isanyonereallyanonymous I put Fairy washing up liquid on. A good dollop to cover the greasy stain, give it a good rub in, leave for 24 hours. Rinse under the tap to get most of the soap off, then put in with a normal wash load. (You can skip the rinse step but depending on how big the mark was and how much Fairy used, you can get a washer full of bubbles Grin)

I second dishwash liquid for stains.

And you can still buy bar soap stain remover which is excelllent - dampen stain & rub soap on before putting into usual wash. Excellent on grease spots. I'm currently using the Elbow Grease stain bar but Vanish do one too - about £1 and lasts for ages

I have the same little blue spots on my wooden toilet seat. I might have to resort to emeryboarding them.
Vanish is really good at removing grease spots; just spray it on the spot and leave for a while before washing.
On a side note: I used to add a scoop of the powder to white loads, it keeps them bright. Whatever is in it, however, did dreadful things to my nether regions.
My whites are dull grey these days.

this is why I wear black knickers 😁

Is this true? Have you done it? I can’t see how I would get the old handles off -there isn’t a visible screw or anything.

I am doing 2 lock replacements this weekend and I will report back.

Here is the Insta woman showing how its done:

Why does my phone send me a notification whenever i’m within a few miles of a Cineworld?? I don’t have their app, I can’t find any reference to them in my apps or notifications, I don’t have them saved in Maps, it doesn’t do this for any other business 😂

Have you inadvertantly saved it as a "rule" in your phone.

I did this with a budgeting ap - I set a "rule" so everytime I went to a Morrisons my budgeting ap would open so I would remember to log the spend.

It didn't work and I never used it, but I did go through the process of (trying to) setting this "rule" in my iphone, after seeing instructions online somewhere.

(Not sure if its called a "rule" or something else)

So you could have set a rule "anytime I'm within X distance of a cineworld let me know"? I often do stuff late a night after a drink and then forget 😁

Our decorator always says bring him in last, because if he painted first then it’s bound to get knocked or scraped by the next tradesperson coming in.

Thank you for saying this.

I will be my "decorator" and I get frozen by thinking I have to do all the painting etc first and then nothing happens.

Your message is a small but powerful liberation.

And if you have a grease stain on an item of clothing that wasn't soaked right away, is there ever any hope of getting it out?!

I have a little spray bottle with a mixture of 3parts water, 2 parts washing up liquid and 1 part glycerin which I spray on marks before washing. It works on everything - biro, blood, grass stains and greasy marks to name a few. My mum used to use it to get the grass stains out of my brother’s cricket whites.

You can get glycerine at chemist shops

proper old school magic.
thank you

Because direct debits are set up by the money-taking company rather than the account holder, you’ll need to ask each company. Some you can probably change online, eg utilities, credit card if you have online accounts/apps.

If you want more control pay them all by standing order rather than direct debit - you get to control the standing order.

So my water/energy/council tax etc is all on standing order - I can change these easily in my banking ap.

Sometimes I build up a little credit, sometimes (ie water) I might have to pay a bit more every 6 months, and I can adjust the SO if I need to.

Pipe cleaner – you can buy a packet at any tobacconist. Perfect for cleaning fridge drains.

I use on old, no longer required baby bottle brush.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 06/11/2025 13:43

Well my grease mark q has been answered (though they still wont come out of t shirts)
But ive got a top tip and a q.
Tip-if you get curry on a white patterned top, get some mug and cup cleaner and soak the item in a solution of it. Doesn't bleach and stain vanished. (And its great stuff, magic to watch all the tannin float off in the bubbles)
My q. I have an iPad mini. Its full up, but nothing i can take off, no netflix etc, emails pruned down. Photos on cloud. I want to restore factory settings, but will I lose all my saved passwords etc?

Why does MY birthday show up in other people's calendars on their phone when I don't want it to? I've googled and that feature is definitely off in my google profile, what else might it be? Android user but not a narcissist, don't want my birthday pushed to everyone like it matters.

Is it picking your birthday up from Facebook?

RobinEllacotStrike · 06/11/2025 13:54

My window handles have arrived.

I will wd40 a couple of my sticky handles but I’m pretty sure I’ve done this before & we are now onto next stage.

Lakeland! Of course!

I need more dehumidifying pellets anyway, so shall brave the website.

If I'm not back this time tomorrow, can someone please come and drag my out from where I'm trapped, transfixed, by 1000 objects I Do Not Need But Now Really Want.Grin

Please can you save my sanity and get me some their oven cleaner.
It's brilliant stuff but like you I am forever going " ooooh how did I cope without that before"

I recorded the film Tenet but my Sky Box has deleted it! Are there are any streaming platforms where it is available free?

You could try a magic eraser sponge on the blue spots - got rid of some red hair dye in our bath so might be worth a try.

If my monthly salary comes in to my bank half way through the month now rather than end/1st, do I have to go to every single Direct Debit I have and find out how to change when they take the Direct Debit or is there a way the bank can do it for me or all in one go? They all have bounced and I can't pay until 15th!

Edited

Depending on your bank , I am with rbs i had the same issue so after jumping through all the automated bumpf on the live chat I spoke to a real person and they switched all of them for me , it took about 2 mins.

Something I've never previously thought of .. where does it drain to?!

To a little tray at the back of your fridge.
The tray normally sits on top of the motor so the heat from that evaporates the water.

JennyChawleigh · 06/11/2025 14:42

We've just bought a Bosch new oven (after 36 years!) and it has so many settings: 3D Hot air, Hot air steam, Hot air gentle, top/bottom heating. But the user manual is written for Germans as it recommends settings for dishes like Nussecken, Viennese whirls etc. There is a section of tips for "British cooking habits" (sponge cake, Yorkshire pudding, pavlova) but NOTHING anywhere on cooking roast/baked potatoes or indeed any other vegetable.
Any suggestions?

Bramshott · 06/11/2025 14:52

@Ormally you can get a little stainless steel oven thermometer for a couple of £ online which you hang from the shelf and it tells you the temperature inside your oven if you're not sure it's correct now that the knob has gone weird. One of my cooker knobs used to only go one way but now goes both ways so I share your pain to an extent...

singthing · 06/11/2025 15:05

I also have a sink problem! Every so often it just smells a bit dank and "river-y".
Plus when I use my washing machine, water backs up into the sink and little middle bit 1-2 times during the cycle, then drains away normally? I am sure it didn't used to do this, but nothing has changed in the machine or set up.

I previously wondered if it was a crap pipework set up under the sink, but now I have a niggling suspicion there may be a small issue further down the pipes. This was enhanced by seeing the water men come and poke round in a manhole at the end of my drive a few weeks ago, saying that some other neighbour nearby had reported "a smell". They found nothing though.

I'm going to tip a whole bottle of unblocker down and see if that has any effect, but otherwise I am stumped.

Anyone know how to change keyboard settings? New Acer 3 laptop is giving a “ symbol instead of the @ symbol when shift+2 is pressed. The # is coming up as the wrong thing too. Keyboard was set up as UK English. Have tried to reset it to US English but it hasn’t changed.

I can't help but want to express solidarity - this is so annoying. I had similar issues on an apple macbook years ago.

Thank you for all the suggestions as to how to ditch the clingfilm and remove microplastics from my food environment.

I have just ordered a selection of glass storage boxes and put my remaining plastic boxes out in the shed to store nails, screws and other bits of tat.

It feels wasteful and not very environmentally friendly, but the cling film will be assigned to the recycling bin. The smell of it is vile and I don’t want it in my body.

Marramgrass · 06/11/2025 16:14

I love this thread and wonder if anyone can help me solve my other current issue.

My washer dryer is causing a loud slamming noise in my pipes when filling. It sounds like it is shutting off the water supply far too sharply. That in turn seems to be upsetting my water cylinder.

Does anyone have any ideas how to stop it water snatching so aggressively.
