A supportive thread for women who have lots of shit to do. Below are some issues that pop into my head at random inconvenient times that I really need to sort out.

Things I need to sort out but I'm not quite sure about.

  1. I really want to cancel my TV licence, but I'm unsure about the rules around this now. It used to be virtually impossible to do but now many are. What do I need to know?
  2. My dentist has been hassling me for years to get an electric toothbrush - I had one but it rattled my brain so I got rid. A few weeks ago I gave in and bought another one - Superdrug own brand. About £40 on offer. IT CUTS MY LIP!! This cant be right? there seems to be a gap between the vibrating head and if it touches my lip it cuts me. Even if I am really careful it does this. Its this faulty? Is this a normal hazzard when using electric toothbrushes? Its probably too late for a refund but is it worth buying another one?
  3. Kitchen sink is starting to be slow draining - what do I do that doesn't involve a plumber.
  4. Newish tyre - dramatically lost air pressure. I topped it up thinking I had a slow leak & it seems to be fine 2 weeks later. Is it?

Let me know if you have any random issues we can support with.

You put the brush (with toothpaste) in your mouth before you turn the brush on 🙂

FFS I never thought of that. 🙄
MN is life changing I tell ya!
thank you

A warning op - firestick also shows live tv. You need a licence for itv, channel 4 even amazon if a live broadcast. Catch up you do not except iPlayer.

i have a load of flexible, various sized, bristle brushes for cleaning things like reusable straws. I was about to recommend that when i saw you'd fixed it.

Oh but I need to know about your little brushes, please. My old ones are all but worn out.

How fabulous - my work here is done! Well after we fix @Ormally 's knob

and my window handles (but not until much later because i'm not seeing my mum until Christmas - although that gives me an idea for what her present will be)

squashyhat · 05/11/2025 12:40

@Sourisblanche Can you still buy pipe cleaners nowadays? one of those might work.

You can buy them at Hobbycraft! They're called craft sticks or something now

ExpatDaughter · 05/11/2025 14:19

My brushes came from Lakeland (and other places, i have more somewhere)

and now my question: Is Lakeland the most middle class shop ever?

PerkingFaintly · 05/11/2025 14:22

ExpatDaughter · 05/11/2025 14:10

Here you go

Lakeland! Of course!

I need more dehumidifying pellets anyway, so shall brave the website.

If I'm not back this time tomorrow, can someone please come and drag my out from where I'm trapped, transfixed, by 1000 objects I Do Not Need But Now Really Want.Grin

If you have tricky/sticky/broken locks and/or handles on your UPVC windows you can simply switch out the handles.

New ones can be bought online for £10 or less and it takes a few minutes to switch them over. No trade required.

Many thanks to a woman on Insta for this magical revelation.

Similarly, if you live in a hard water area and despite your best efforts have a shower head caked up with limescale, you don't need to buy a new shower head. Just the bit that the water comes out of, which is called a cassette and a fraction of the price. It screws on like a lid. DIY. A very nice plumber taught me this.

RobinEllacotStrike · 05/11/2025 14:26

@StokePotteries I can't visualise the bit you replace?

@ExpatDaughter I do think LL ties with Sweaty Betty for the most middle class shop in UK 😁

OP posts:
ExpatDaughter · 05/11/2025 14:40

never been in a Sweaty Betty. in fact i've never heard of it!

RobinEllacotStrike · 05/11/2025 14:48

its very naice very expensive exercise clothes for women - shops in London suburbs like Chiswick, Notting Hill, East Dulwich etc

I have 2 pairs of their exercise leggings (purchased greatly reduced on sale of course) and they are fantastic, but I could never afford to walk into a shop and buy something off the rack (or I could afford to I guess but I would never choose to spend THAT much on leggings)

OP posts:
ExpatDaughter · 05/11/2025 14:50

i just saw some of their leggings, they look great THEN I SAW THE PRICE

Hoogieflip · 05/11/2025 14:53

ExpatDaughter · 05/11/2025 13:11

do you have a link? my mum has lost all the keys to her window handles, if i can just switch them out she will be able to close the ones that are stuck open and (finally) open the ones that are stuck closed!

I recently bought replacement keys for my 20 year old wooden windows: 2 for £3.95. Sorry, I can't get a link to work but on Amazon search for Titon Replacement Window Keys. The seller was The Lock and Safe Shop.

ExpatDaughter · 05/11/2025 14:55

I've tried everything with the windows, problem is she's an elderly widow and my dad did All The Manly Man Things and she hasn't a clue where the keys might be, or whatever. It might be easier for me (as the name says, i don'T live in the same country) to just replace the handles.

Plus it makes me look all tough and capable, and is one in the eye for my lazy siblings who never do anything.... (oh, there could be some baggage here)

Thank you. I will look at the key option too.

ExpatDaughter · 05/11/2025 14:50

oh yeah they are super snatched leggings.

Worth keeping an eye out for the sales if you work out.

Llama leggings are very good. Loads of great designs and they have POCKETS

PauliesWalnuts · 05/11/2025 15:46

Take a photo of the lock and send it to www.webkeys.co.uk - they are great at matching new keys to old locks.

ExpatDaughter · 05/11/2025 16:01

unfortunately i won't be back at her place before right before Christmas so i won't be able to do anything until i get there (she doesn't do internet or mobile phones or anything so getting a picture isn't possible)

but i reckon i can probably get down to B&Q and get one when i arrive, and then hopefully i can get it on and working, and do the others just before i leave.

But i will bear the webbkeys thing in mind too, thank you.

ETA. basically her bathroom window is jammed open a bit (first level, so not really worried about burglars atm) so it is bloody freezing in there. And she can't open the spare room window (Or many others) so when i stay there i stifle to death (hyperbole for dramatic effect) so i need quick relatively easy fixes that i can do in my flying visits.

FeministThrowingAPrincessParty · 05/11/2025 22:23

Buy a Suri electric toothbrush. They’re gentle and eco

Allthesnowallthetime · 05/11/2025 22:36

Now that the electric toothbrush situation has been solved, can anyone advise about using a water flosser? I used to have one but gave it away because I was incapable of using it without getting completely soaked.

Sourisblanche · 05/11/2025 12:37

My fridge (leiber) has a small drain at the back which is blocked. I’ve stuck a few things in to free blockage such a screwdriver and wooden skewer but it needs to be something that bends!

It’s happened before but not for a while and I managed to free blockage last time… meanwhile there is water gathering in my salad drawer and on the floor.

I’m at work, about to go home for lunch and expect a pool of water waiting for me in the kitchen sigh.

I have a special metal skewer with the end bent about 45 degrees that I use for this job, and only this job. No one else in the house knows what it’s for or where the fridge water goes.

QBTheRoundestOfBees · 05/11/2025 22:49

RobinEllacotStrike · 05/11/2025 12:46

Yes I do this too & flush with hot water etc. But we are slowly but steadily moving into new territory.

Not read the full thread, but you can buy a plumber’s snake which is a twisty thing which goes down the sink and the twisting motion clears the blockage. It’s very long (you basically unroll it using a handle into the pipes) so if the drain unblocker or a plunger doesn’t work, you can clear it without calling a plumber. I undid the piping at the u-bend and started there with it, but you can probably unscrew the plug cover thing and put it down the sink as it goes around bends. You can buy them in B&Q.

Thank you @RobinEllacotStrike @Eyesopenwideawake @squashyhat you reminded me that I kept some of the crafting stuff from when dc were little (now late teens!Blush) and I did indeed have some pipe cleaners at the bottom of the box. A nice bright turquoise one did the job and by the time I got back from a short dog walk, it had drained! Smile

Something I've never previously thought of .. where does it drain to?!
