I don't want to pay more fucking tax!

1000 replies

marthainthemarket · 04/11/2025 14:17

I am the sole earner in a family of four, earning just under 40k a year and getting probably fuck all or below inflation pay increase next year, if I am lucky enough to keep my job ( public sector and employer needing to make massive budget savings). I barely cope now.

I am so fucking angry that Labour fucked up the disability benefit cuts. Other countries don't have run away disability benefits crises because they have a proper assessment process that means they keep a lid on people getting disability benefits who don't really need them. But instead of dealing with that, they came up with a crap proposed cut that wouldn't have dealt with the actual issues and they couldn't defend.

And having fucked that up they are now raising everyone's tax. I hate them!

Yes to me that was the start of the rot. Cameron should be in the tower of London for treason in my opinion!

What about Starmer?

From Reeves’ demeanour this morning we know it won’t be good.

Yes she’s pre preparing everyone to take tax hikes. They messed up last time so need more again.

It’s this

Barclays is forecasting that Reeves will be looking for £41bn in tax rises in the budget, up from their prediction of £26.5bn in September.

Lastfroginthebox · 04/11/2025 16:33

The fact is that if we want better services, we have to pay for them. People are quite happy to moan about the state of the country but instantly start protesting when they're asked to pay a few extra quid.

The raised tax won't go on extra services, those will still be shit. There's a £151.9 billion deficit.

Menapausemum1974 · 04/11/2025 16:29

@Fairyladyonwheels but a large amount of these claimants will be working !

That is the problem and no doubt will be removed soon.

Makes no sense for two people to do the same job but one 5 days a week and the other 3 days. Yet because of state top ups they both get the same amount of money each month.

Dragonscaledaisy · 04/11/2025 15:52

Well at least we can say without doubt the current black hole is entirely of Reeves' making. She'll be gone before Christmas.

It’s on Starmer even more, they together on this.

ARoomSomewhere · 04/11/2025 16:09

Exactly! The 2008 crisis, then 'Austerity', then Brexit & then Covid are the real source of problems we face now. Add in the current geo-political situation (we cannot avoid hte need to spend on defence) & the run-into-the-ground NHS (& an ageing population & some youngsters who were badly affected by Covid (my own Ds has heart damage). But, yes OP, lets blame Labour not cutting disability benefits enough. Everyone wants good services & no one wants to pay.

More accurately everyone wants good services so long as somebody else pays for it.

NellieJean · 04/11/2025 16:39

You are right that disability benefits need reform. However I think you’d be disappointed by how little difference it would make in the overall scheme of things. This country lives beyond its means and the electorate is dreaming if it thinks there are any easy answers.

nodramamama · 04/11/2025 16:39

Zebedee999 · 04/11/2025 14:47

That's all ancient history now. It is what happens now and in the future that matters.

What a convenient statement, one all those who voted for Brexit no doubt try to delude themselves with.

14 years of progressively bad decisions are now having painful consequences felt by all. But lots of people just thought this country is so 'Great' it didn't need Europe.
Where are all the wonderful deals, countries just desperately queueing up to deal with 'Great' Britain?
Sticking your head in the sand won't fix anything.

Labour have only been in 1 year, so yes they have a lot of work to do. And yes they haven't been perfect.

Those of us who voted against Brexit knew there would be dire consequences.
Now we get to pay more taxes too for something we didn't vote for . But I'll do it because Adulting is required by all , I just hope pensioners and those who are disabled still get enough assistance.

jonnybriggswasgreat · 04/11/2025 16:40

I agree. This government is useless and has no backbone, so they’re going after the easy target.

I am amused by some people here saying the same thing “we all have to pay”. Part of the problem as to why this country is doing so badly is because huge numbers of people aren’t contributing and some never will. Also, people are naive to believe that paying more tax results in improved services.

cottonwoolie · 04/11/2025 16:41

More accurately everyone wants good services so long as somebody else pays for it.

Impossible particularly with an ageing population

ComfortFoodCafe · 04/11/2025 16:41

even if disability benefits get reformed, it honestly will make fuck all difference. So yabu, disability isn’t the issue here.
net zero - refusing to drill the north ocean is a massive issue.

HectorPlasm · 04/11/2025 16:41

3 strands in this society:

  • Those who get everything and pay in nothing
  • Those who get nothing and pay in everything
  • Those who are rich enough to avoid tax

Oh good. Level 2 to take the brunt again

May be try and cut spending as well? Lifting the 2 child benefit cap my arse

Yep the electorate need to take some responsibility

ComfortFoodCafe · 04/11/2025 16:42

Also Reeves isnt qualified for the job, maybe if we had someone actually qualified who knew what they were doing we wouldn’t be so hard done by.

@Fairyladyonwheels i get you but i think it's a much bigger problem! The system doesn't work but politicians just go for a quick fix with only the next 4 years in their sights! The whole thing needs a reset ! Agree people shouldn't be allowed in to work p/t and claim for f/t through choice but also people shouldn't be working f/ t and need to be topped up because the wages are so poor they can't live off them!

Ok. So it will help pay off the deficit. Either way, the government need to raise more money. How else do you suggest they do so?

Why mention pensioners (who have contributed) but no mention of working age adults who live exclusively on benefits and those that receive wage top-ups?

Responsibility isn’t increasing taxes every year, and incredibly high debt servicing.

it makes no sense to lift the 2 child cap, yet take away disability. It will cost them more.

Yes these seem to be the untouchables under Labour.

No one wants to pay more tax @marthainthemarket but we need more money and it has to come from somewhere. There is no magic money tree.

I think many are unaware of how much shit we are in. After years of Austerity, Brexit and Covid, Liz Truss brought us to the brink of bankruptcy. It's going to take time and money for the UK to recover.

We have had enough money but it has been grossly mismanaged for years!

MaidOfSteel · 04/11/2025 16:46

It’s been a few years now since taxation powers were devolved to Scotland. I’ll include a photo of the rates so you can see how high they are compared to England & Wales. I don’t think public services are improving at all, considering the extra revenue the Scottish government has raised, but I don’t know if it has caused a rush of people to move to Northumberland & Cumbria, either. I’m just hoping Scottish rates won’t go up even more!

I don't want to pay more fucking tax!
cottonwoolie · 04/11/2025 16:46

How many times!!!!

We have an ageing population and the majority have not paid enough tax for a state pension and the NHS.

The working age adults who don't work and live on benefits are a small percentage of the population. As the state pension age increases this proportion also grows as more 60 something will have chronic illness.

Most people who work and get benefits is to help fund housing and childcare costs which are significantly higher than the past....

Chiefangel · 04/11/2025 16:46

You say you are the sole earner, are the other 3 people in your household children? or is one of them a partner/husband and if so why can they not work?
How old are your children?
we all hate paying tax, why are you even surprised that this will happen?

cottonwoolie · 04/11/2025 16:47

Responsibility isn’t increasing taxes every year, and incredibly high debt servicing.

Responsibility means not kicking the can down the road which the electorate have done for years. No road left now!
