I don't want to pay more fucking tax!

1000 replies

marthainthemarket · 04/11/2025 14:17

I am the sole earner in a family of four, earning just under 40k a year and getting probably fuck all or below inflation pay increase next year, if I am lucky enough to keep my job ( public sector and employer needing to make massive budget savings). I barely cope now.

I am so fucking angry that Labour fucked up the disability benefit cuts. Other countries don't have run away disability benefits crises because they have a proper assessment process that means they keep a lid on people getting disability benefits who don't really need them. But instead of dealing with that, they came up with a crap proposed cut that wouldn't have dealt with the actual issues and they couldn't defend.

And having fucked that up they are now raising everyone's tax. I hate them!

Tackle welfare?

This is where Reeves is again disingenuous.

She knows it will be impossible given that the unions and back benches will again kibosh it.

She is not being honest.

I can see the broader mood turning very ugly against undeserving claimants.

Your all blaming the torys but we had austerity because labour left nothing in the pot , both are as bad as one another. The last year of so of tory goverment things did seem to be picking up and have got drastically worse again, its not all brexit either , look at other european countries many ard not farinv well and most do not have a welfare bill like the uk. There are thise that abuse the system and wether that costs just £20000 it money off those who need it. I know someone never worked for years , anxiety , rent paid on 3 bed house for one person, runs a car and out all the time, socialising. Easiily could do some sort of job. I suffer from anxiety but work because i need to provide. Labour need the backbone to tackle the issues but they haven

Yes I suppose that’s why it’s not even mentioned any more but it’s the elephant in the room.

Facts matter.

Although clearly not to you.

Where do you get your ‘facts’ from? The lying press? Lying politicians? Books? (Someone else’s POV) just curious

Labour won't tackle it. These people are their core voters.

You could also view it that they are pushing more and more people towards poverty, which along with immigrants, are their core voter demographic.

Oh grow up. People want more and more services for less and less tax.

And there are fewer and fewer people in full time employment. Too many want other people to carry the burden.

Labour didn't F it up. The Conservative party is the most successful political party in the world cos people like you blame Labour for years of inept tory government!

Wake up.

JulianClarysDog · 04/11/2025 18:57

It’s the uncertainty that is distressing me. I’m feeling really spooked by all the rumours about which taxes are going to be raised. After all this build-up I’m ready to face the music and hear what’s actually going to happen.

Oh grow up. People want more and more services for less and less tax.

This is the problem.

Income tax is the fairest way for a government to raise money, because when the system works properly, and is monitored so would-be cheats are penalised, everyone pays according to their means.

I have never voted in my life for a party that threatens to cut income tax. I say 'threatened', because I know from experience that a few extra quid in my pocket always means cuts to services.

You can have higher taxes and good services, or low tax and minimal services, like the USA. I'd rather pay and have a functioning NHS, social services etc.

MarriedAtFirstFright · 04/11/2025 18:39

@belovedandpureones Genuine question, how do you determine someone is fraudulently claiming? The fraud rates are minuscule for PIP because it is so hard to get and you need medical evidence. How are people defrauding it? even the assessment itself is brutal and people often score 0 points in spite of medical evidence. How would you decide who is genuinely worthy of the benefit?

I have a hidden physical disability. I’m an ambulatory wheelchair user. I don’t look disabled but I am. So how would you tell?

The thing is they don't need to be fraudulent claims. The definition of 'disability' is now so wide that it is almost meaningless. The idea that it is hard to claim these benefits is also laughable. Given that you can get an ADHD diagnosis off the back of a 30 minute video call and many (perhaps the majority) of GPs will sign you off for weeks if not months with ill defined 'stress and anxiety' the idea that the evidential basis for these claims is robust is frankly laughable.

No it’s not ancient history, so you’re deciding to ignore, that the conservatives, who were in power for the last 14 years, should be held accountable for how our economy is now, Labour have been in government for just over 1 year and yet are getting all the blame.

Labour should get a lot of the blame for introducing tax credits. A couple/single parent with dc only had to work 16 hours per week and would get massively topped up to a full time salary until their youngest was 16. They also got more money for every extra child they had.

There were plenty of parents hugely dropping their working hours in order to claim. Many of them never went back to full time work.

I certainly don't want more and more services, just the basics would be fine. However the taxes aren't funding services, they are funding cash handouts.

Greenwitchart · 04/11/2025 19:02

It is really daft and frankly pathetic to suggest that the cost of living crisis is caused by disabled people...

Brexit, Covid, greedy utility companies and one useless government after another got us in this mess.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 04/11/2025 19:03

The welfare system has spiralled out of control. Until we go back to a system where those who are genuine need are the recipients, we're doomed. Benefits shouldn't give people an equivalent lifestyle to workers, otherwise what's the incentive to get them into the job market. And if you come into the country for whatever reason, you get nothing until you've paid NI and income tax for at least 10 years. We're the weakest link in Europe and it has to stop.

It's funny that those who say that it's easy to claim these disability benefits rarely have any experience with actually claiming them.

It's also to do with needs, not diagnosis. You don't need a diagnosis.

Brmmmn · 04/11/2025 19:05

How can you blame disabled people for being disabled?

dizzydizzydizzy · 04/11/2025 19:05

Sterlingrose · 04/11/2025 14:38

Have you even bothered to look at how much is spent on disability benefits, how much disability benefits goes unclaimed, how incredibly tiny the rates of fraud are, and how much money is stolen by millionaires in this country? We need to close the tax loopholes for the likes of Amazon and the royal family.

Maybe look up, not down? Disabled people aren't your enemy. The media just wants you to think they are.

Yes! And I take issue with the OP's comment on other countries having proper assessment processes for disability benefits. Anyone has ever applied for PIP will know that the process is so demanding that most people need specialist help to fill out the forms and also have to go through a gruelling health assessment, despite providing mountains of doctors letters and other medical evidence. It takes months.

Cyclebabble · 04/11/2025 19:05

Yes I am sure I and many more are in for a shafting. No hope that welfare spending will be tackled, just shaft anyone working.

It isn't anymore. The Tories tore the party to bits following Brexit. The emergence of Reform UK has split the right wing vote in the UK, probably irrevocably.

Happy to pay more tax to make sure that valuable public sector jobs like yours are saved. Not going to blame the disabled.

healthadvice123 · 04/11/2025 19:06

Also they promised not to raise income tax , they knew the figures, they knew what they were getting into. Don’t put things in a manifesto if you don’t know you can’t promise. The reason the tories got in last time ws due to labour leaving country in bad way and same again , so they really are not any better. Who knows who will get in next as they are all pretty rubbish

Olderkids · 04/11/2025 19:06

Bloozie · 04/11/2025 14:51

No one wants to pay more tax.

But the ageing population, cost of the pandemic, Brexit and increased defence costs means we all will have to.

Any political party pretending that we can cut taxes now is lying to you. Even Reform have realised it isn’t feasible and they are normally very happy to park a few buses between their promises and the truth.

I wouldn’t be too angry about paying more tax if I thought it wouldn't be wasted by this government. If they raise what we pay, it must be put into the services that we, British working people need.
So cut foreign aid, stop fraudulent benefit claims, stop treating illegal immigrants like VIP guests, weed out the tax dodgers, stop the health tourists. We have to start putting ourselves first by investing in defence, police, education and health.

Million more people are now claiming universal credit compared to a year ago which increases the welfare bill further. Crazy times.

Not sure if this has already been said but that'll be because the final group of legacy benefit claimants have been moved over to UC.
