Bored on my days off work

I work part time and have found recently that I am bored on my days off and end up doom scrolling. I need some hobbies, any ideas? I live rurally so don’t have access to clubs without a distance to travel.

Knitting
Painting
colouring books
walking
cycling
jigsaws
genealogy
reading
download an exercise app
The OU has lots of short online courses, free of charge

Are there really no clubs/ organisations near you? Could you start a book group or a discussion group?

Have you ever fancied a stab at creative writing? I love it.

ErlingHaalandsManBun · 04/11/2025 14:26

It always amazes me when people say they are bored.

When I am off I:

Meet friends for lunch/coffee
Call round to see friends/family (those who don't mind me dropping in)
Messaging friends/family I have not connected with for a while.
Do some housework/washing with my music on in the background
Do other household tasks I generally put off (clearing/sorting)
Catch up on life admin
Plan for any upcoming Birthdays/Christmas
Relax with a book and a coffee
Go for a long walk with my dogs and stop for coffee
Go into town and mooch round the charity shops
Explore a new town and walk somewhere new
Go for a drive
Write my journal
Watch a couple of episodes of a box set or a movie
Get a decent workout in
Take a long bath or shower
Scroll Rightmove and daydream
Bum about on Mumsnet for a while

Is there something you’ve always wanted to do? Maybe do a little bit of that? Good luck

Volunteer! I have more time off than I would like to this year so I have started volunteering one day a week. Find a charity that interests you and offer your services!

Mumof1andacat · 04/11/2025 20:11

Learn a language
Online learning course - a subject of interest
Learn crocheting/knitting
Journal scrapbooking
Diamond painting
Paint by numbers

ilucgaiaw · 04/11/2025 20:12

What sort of things are you interested in?

What about:
Building and decorating dolls' houses
Learning a language online
Jigsaws (use up absolutely loads of time!!)
Reading
Watercolours or colouring books etc.
Day trips out
Cooking - exploring different cuisines. I did this during COVID - a different cuisine each month
Knitting/sewing/crocheting etc
Diamond dot paintings

Definitely consider volunteering - I’d love to be an Appropriate Adult or befriender of a vulnerable youth if I had time (I don’t). There are so many diverse opportunities to explore that could align with your values, skills and interests. Good luck

OnlyFangs · 04/11/2025 21:10

Volunteer!
I juggle volunteering alongside kids and full time work but would do a lot more if I dropped to part time

I was an Appropriate Adult for a while it was really interesting and eye opening

SwanSong30 · 04/11/2025 21:15

Thank you everyone, there are some fab ideas! Volunteering is something I have considered and will explore again. I haven’t heard of diamond painting so will definitely look at that!

I go horse riding on my one day off in the week. Get all my house jobs done in the morning after school drop off then go riding in the afternoon. If I’m lucky my mum picks the kids up and I get even longer!
