Best ever Christmas advert (and yes I know it's November and there is a Christmas forum)

The 2025 JL is out and it's causing quite the debate, had me in floods (twice!) as it's quite poignant to me.

A few other adverts from years gone by have been mentioned but just wondering what everyone's favourite Christmas adverts are.

Sainsbury's Christmas in a day, where people sent in their videos of Christmas (hour long version available on You Tube, I love it!).

AutumnCosy2025 · 04/11/2025 13:13

So you know it's Nov & there's a Christmas topic, but you still list here. Why?

Because its the chat section, for, y'know, chatting about stuff.

Op my favourite one was a bank one from maybe 15 years ago, a guy lost his scarf on the bus, and then someone from the bank found it, and got it back to him, and the guy was all sentimental about it, turns out his son had made him that scarf when he was a kid and wrote him a card telling him he was the best dad ever. At the end it shows him giving his son the scarf and saying he was the best dad ever because he had a newborn.

I howled every time, probably didn't help that I was pregnant 🤣

I love the new JL ad - really resonates and I guess I’m key demographic judging by the music choice alone.

I’m 50, spent the best part of the 90’s at raves and clubbing, still doing so to this day. Where love lives is an absolute classic track, in my top 5 of all time.

To me, the story telling is the dad, who had his life before kids, raises kids, difficult and distant relationships with said growing kids and reconnects through music. The son, although aloof perhaps, has listened and thoughtfully bought the vinyl of one of dad’s favourite tunes, they repaired their bond.
Thats my take, it hits the spot with me for those exact points above.

I’m not convinced my early teen daughter will buy ME a copy, but she has shown an interest of some of my faves over the years!
And I might’ve gotten a little misty eyed when I first saw it.

RedRiverShore5 · 04/11/2025 13:32

The JL one about 10 years ago when they went through the ages, though I have got a feeling it wasn't a Christmas one maybe

Because I wanted to reach out to all the miserable souls in chat, obvs!

Honestly, was there any need?

well yes there was actually.

The Christmas Topic was created quite a few years ago, so that people who were struggling with it could still use MN without having Christmas shoved in their faces at every turn.

People dealing with bereavements especially.

Its inconsiderate of other people for you to decide they need to be all involved in your Christmas cheer in November.

So there is not allowed to be any mention of Christmas, anywhere else on MN other than the Christmas forum, so we don't upset people?

Noted, please feel free to report my thread and get it moved.

My take on the JL advert
again a target demographic
was that the dad thought that raving was the absolute best but where the real love is is when he met his baby boy and watched him grow (because it’s impossible to describe that meet your first baby for the first time feeling I know H changed in an instant)

Cosywintervibes · 04/11/2025 14:59

Just watched the JL ad and it did bring a little tear and sniff to me, however I really don't like the song think they could have used a much better one from that era.

Not into any of the other Christmas ads except my beloved Kevin the carrot 🥰

The best ever Christmas advert in my humble opinion was the one on Christmas day during the war and they played football. Was that JL? 🥰😭

Edited

Well, that was the intention when it was set up, threads were moved to the topic outside of December.

but the site was smaller & more community minded in those days.

these days it's probably too big to do that, it's not so community minded or run the same.

Some people don't even know the topic exists as the site is so huge & difficult to navigate for many. But I think it's inconsiderate to start Christmas Threads in Nov, out of the topic, when you do know it exists and to suggest people who don't want to talk about Christmas in Nov are miserable.

Oh my goodness, you really do have a bee in your bonnet?

I suggest you avoid the 16 page Christmas thread in AIBU (or better still get yourself over there and try and police those posters who are - gasp - talking about Christmas in November).

As I said please report this thread and get it moved.

And yes I know how MN works having been here a good 13 years. I also sadly understand bereavement and the festive period having had my mum drop dead 3 months before Christmas a few years ago!

It was Sainsburys and I hadn't seen it before today. Had to look it up after seeing it mentioned in another thread.

Would never have guessed it was Saninsburys. Might pop that in the Christmas quiz this year 😉

People struggle with all sorts of things. In recent weeks on chat, there has been posts about abusive relationships, CSA, health problems, deaths of loved ones etc. All topics that could be very upsetting for some people. All topics that could, in theory, find a different place on the site.

But people read the titles, realise it might not be the thread for them and scroll past. The OP couldn’t have made it any more obvious that it was about Christmas adverts. It’s not her role (or yours) to censor what she wants to chat about to ensure that nobody on Chat is offended.

StElwicksNeighbourhoodAssociation · 04/11/2025 16:23

You don't even need to just scroll past - you can hide the thread and not have to worry about it. And I say that as someone who has no family and finds Christmas very hard.

Honestly, just scroll on, if I wanted to avoid any mention of christmas and believe me some years I have! I'd just not click on threads that mentioned christmas it's that simple.
What's more annoying is someone commenting on a thread just to derail it! Going back to the op my favourite was buster the dog plus anything Kevin the carrot.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 04/11/2025 21:53

My favourites are the JL Snowman one. The JL one with The Smiths song where the boy ignores his presents to rush to give his mum her present. Sainsbury’s Mog one where the cat set fire to the house!

hellswelshy · 04/11/2025 22:28

I liked one last year with the oven gloves coming to life and singing! It made me laugh every time 😂 Morrisons maybe?

I remember that! It was brilliant!

I’m just so disappointed at the lack of diversity in the new JL ad. I would have loved to have seen a Black family take centre stage. A shame.

Yogaandchocolate · 04/11/2025 23:45

Favourite John Lewis ad

Favourite is the wrong word but this advert is very powerful

Rearing2go · 04/11/2025 23:47

The Guinness advert, the man leaving the couples house on Christmas Eve and his friend shouts “don’t forget to turn the lights out” and there is a deer in the ad and it ends with the St James gate the guiness gates
