Can someone explain to me why/how the Labour government has directly made them worse off in the last 15 months?

Can someone explain to me why/how the Labour government has directly made them worse off in the last 15 months? I see this claim a lot on these pages, but I don't understand why. Sorry if I sound stupid, I am just trying to get clear.

I totally understand that the cost of living keeps going up - that inflation keeps rising (3.5-3.8%?) and that mortgage interest remains relatively high, but I don't understand why or how this is the fault of the current government? What have/haven't they done? Are people angry that they haven't curbed inflation? What should they be doing?

If we could avoid mentioning the things that didn't actually happen (eg the Winter Fuel Allowence cuts) and speculation about what the next budget will do (doubling of council tax, rise in minimum wage etc), that would be really helpful. I am looking for actual changes made by this that have directly affected your financial situation since Labour got it.

There's not enough support for people who are willing to work.

My parents are lifelong conservative voters (with a small c) and they are going to vote Reform next time round. They both say they think they lived through the best of times.

I think that things will be unbelievably hard over the next 20 years in the UK but will get better again.

Well, yes, if people like your parents voted in Reform, then we'll descend into absolute chaos for a bit. Hopefully we'll come out the other side again when they get kicked out, but I guess that will depend on how much damage they manage to do in the interim.

It's pretty common for me and my friends to chat about politics, and what we think of specific policies. I get that this is alien to some people.

Yes I’m sure but are they really so unaware that their thousands are doing sod all?

If Reform get elected it will Labour’s fault for not addressing the concerns of voters.

We’re in realms of utter comedy fantasy now with the few remaining Labour supporters. It’s like self parody.

It really is.

The state sector is crying out for teachers, so I'm sure your friend will get another job. Redundancy is hard - it happened to me as a result of Brexit - but it can actually turn out to be a positive sometimes.

And yes, a private school local to me has recently closed. Publicly, they said that it was the result of the VAT, but their audited accounts online told a somewhat different story - they had been running at a loss for years, their reserves were seriously depleted and their pupil numbers had been falling for years. Some organisations just aren't financially viable. I'm sure it was difficult for the families affected, but the other local private schools have seen a boost in their numbers as a consequence.

And you're right, of course, that nobody is happy when their costs increase, but some of us accept that it's right for us to contribute more if we are in the fortunate position of being able to do so.

There is a reason the state sector is crying out for teachers.

Some of us are prepared to pay but want it spent wisely and efficiently. We are not here to virtue signal while dropping our money into a big black hole.

Nonsense.

There is much to blame Labour for, and they will have to take responsibility for their own failures.

Likewise, the Tories and the other opposition parties will have to take responsibility for their failure to provide w more attractive alternative.

But if we end up with a Reform government, it will be fairly and squarely the fault of the people who chose to vote for a far right populist party. They will have to own their choices and they will not be able to gaslight others into believing that they are to blame.

They have mixed views on the performance of the current Labour government. Some are frustrated, like me, that the government is not being bold enough and that they don't seem to have a plan, but they still think that the shitshow that we have got now is better than the shitshow that we had before. Others assure me that good things are happening behind the scenes, and just think that Labour has a shit PR machine. Some are withholding judgement for now because they think it's early days etc.

We all want our taxes spent wisely and efficiently, and we can probably point to the failure to do so in every single government that we've ever had. But some people favour lower tax and others favour a more redistributive model.

This is actually getting a bit sad now.

If you vote for a populist party you get what you deserve. End off.

6thformoptions · 04/11/2025 19:10

They are taking an extra 10k every school year from my inheritance which is paying for DD's schooling which means we don't have enough for her to be able to do A' Levels there where she is thriving. There will literally be nothing left for her now as I am a single parent with no other inheritance coming. It was meant to be for her education and has already been taxed plenty with IHT.

80% of voters didn’t vote for Labour but got them anyway.

RoostingHens · 04/11/2025 19:17

Politicians deserve to lose if they think voters are wrong.

RoostingHens · 04/11/2025 19:18

And yes, of course it is the conservatives fault they are no longer in government.

What’s with Labour’s reliance on the term populism anyway. Labour use slogans and lies. And democracy means people vote for what they want.

Some of them are just unhappy about having to pay VAT on private school fees. Wink

So your kid’s school is £50k a year? My heart bleeds.

Fair enough. There is actually quite a range of views but we share underlying values so inevitably there are common factors. And given that I'm talking specifically about friends with dc in private schools who are on board with VAT on school fees, it's unsurprising that they tend to be left leaning. However, there is quite a lot of variation in their evaluations of the current government.

🤣🤣🤣

It's OK, I'm a lower wage earner, so we will get top ups soon I'm sure, at the tax payers expense of course. Nothing left now so with my shit health I'm a burden for life.

Thanks for showing how caring the average Labour voter is for SEN kids though. As if we didn't know already.

There are 25% more unemployed now than when Labour took power. Unemployment always increases under Labour as they need to keep people impoverished to maintain their voter base.

Unemployment will continue to increase as Reeves takes more money out of the economy, energy costs remain the highest in the developed world to fund Milliband's vanity projects, increase business taxes.

Add to this all the corruption (Starmer's free stuff, Raynor/Reeves housing fiddles, etc) and broken promises (smash the gangs lol, WASPI women, WFA, etc)) and it is plain to see it has been a complete s__ show.

To be fair things were bad when they took over but Labour are making things far worse even if you are in denial yourself.

Unemployment was really high under Thatcher and then again under Major so comparatively the Cons have a worse record of unemployment

I really think it would help with characterisation if you gave them names and a backstory each.

Araminta1003 · 04/11/2025 19:59

So why are all the heads of private schools not on board with VAT on private school fees? Show me one, that is genuinely supportive of VAT on private school fees. Have not heard a single on speak out how it is a good thing.
