Is feeling envy toward friends normal?

I grew up with the idea that envy is shameful and “good people” are always happy for their friends. But in adult life I’ve noticed the opposite — plenty of friends openly say they feel envy when someone achieves something, and some even act on it (e.g. downplaying success, passive digs, or gossip).
When did envy become socially “acceptable”? Or has it always been there and people are just more honest now? Is it normal to feel envy as long as you don’t act badly on it? Where’s the line between envy being human vs. envy becoming toxic?

Envy isn't always negative, it makes me strive to achieve what I want. And it does no harm to be envious or jealous, as long as you're not a dick about it

Can you give examples?

I think envy needs to be turned over into action on one's own part. I agree that it is not nice, not a positive emotion to feel. I have a friend who suffers with it quite a bit and it must be hard. I think if you like what someone else has done or achieved, then get off your arse and start working on your own plan. Then always be happy for your friends. I don't like people who are bitter and jealous of others and not doing anything themselves.
