Stinky item from Vinted

I bought a ‘new without tags’ jacket and it reeks of strong febreze or softener or something. It’s been drenched in it, I’ve had it hanging in the garage to air overnight but it’s still overpowering.

It’s dry-clean only. Quite an expensive jacket. It’s in great condition and lovely, but it just stinks.

Can I send it back for being smelly? Anyone experienced similar? What did you do?

That’s why you pay the insurance extra. Just raise the issue and ask to return it.

THisbackwithavengeance · 03/11/2025 11:27

I think it’s a bit excessive to return due to strong febreeze. Different if it were fags, weed or damp.

Im sure Google will come up with a lot of solutions. I’d wait until a dry day and hang on the line personally.

You can return it but I'd hazard a guess that the seller won't pay for it so you have foot the bill

I hung something like this outside for 4 days and the stench of cheap perfume was gone (in its place BO) so then I had to wash it multiple times. This is the problem with second hand clothes!

FeatheryFlorence · 03/11/2025 11:31

Hang on the washing line. It’s a blowy day today so that should work.

Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliopfobia · 03/11/2025 12:04

Good luck getting the chem smell out of the jacket; even hanging it up outside for days on end I couldn't do it with something I bought.
What bad odour was the previous owner trying to mask I wonder?

I hope you're able to air it sufficiently to remove the stinky smell, personally I would return it, it isn't 'new in box' if it reeks of chemical perfume that's for sure.

madaboutpurple · 03/11/2025 17:06

A lot of sellers use Febreze, I always wash my clothes anyway. I reckon it would stop the aroma once you have hung it outside.

Mouthfulofquiz · 03/11/2025 17:07

Could you get it dry cleaned?

TheThirdKit · 05/11/2025 06:47

Thanks all, I’ve sent it back. It’s such a strong chemical smell, think concentrated Zoflora or Febreze and it’s not shifting. There’s an odd undertone too. Seller seemed fine and has accepted it back.

I am very suspicious of “New without tags” as I suspect in majority of cases it means worn and the fabreze is to mask any odours from use.
In one case I was looking at a “new without tags” item and there was a picture of the seller wearing it . Glad you got your refund.

Tiebiter · 05/11/2025 07:34

I had similar with cigarette smoke recently I had soaked it in vinegar overnight and washed it and it came out well. I was annoyed though but couldn't be bothered to return. I got it fairly cheap so it wasn't a huge hassle and I tend to wash everything anyway because you have no idea where it's been.

It takes time for smells to go

I put items on hangers in the bathroom - the steam gradually gets rid of the smell over a couple of weeks xx

Texting automatic kisses 🙄🙄
