What do you put in your tumble dryer?

Within the last month we have bought a tumble dryer. I'm sure it's amazing, but what do you use yours for? What do you NOT put in there? Ive heard horror stories about clothes shrinking. So far I have put sheets, towels and socks in. I don't want it on all the time, but just need a little help as feel it could be more productive!

Most things, but not jumpers, cardigans etc.

Arlanymor · 01/11/2025 22:39

Everything with the exception of jumpers.

TheChosenTwo · 01/11/2025 22:39

Almost everything apart from any of my fancy dresses and knitwear really. A couple of dds bits don’t go in but she does her own washing and If dh has an issue with how I dry stuff he can do his own!

KatyaKanani · 01/11/2025 22:40

I've had tumble dryers for more than 30 years, nothing has ever shrunk. You just use the right programme.
Nowadays, modern ones have moisture sensors, so they're even better.
I tumble dry everything apart from jeans, and 100% cotton shirts. I don't have anything polyester, but I think you can't tumble dry those items.
Sheets, towels, most things, bliss 😍

DiscoBeat · 01/11/2025 22:46

I don't put lingerie, blouses, any denim or woollens or duvet covers in (I don't like to iron them so hang them over an airer/on the line).

WonderfulSmith · 01/11/2025 22:49

I do a wash of ‘not tumble dryer’ stuff altogether so I don’t dry any by mistake.

I don’t dry DHs T-shirts as he’s convinced they shrink, his trousers, my dresses, wool jumpers. Everything else goes in. So jeans, socks, pants, towels, bed clothes, leggings, pyjamas.

Tryingmybest100 · 01/11/2025 22:50

Towels, bedding, pants, socks, face cloths, kids pjs

ninjahamster · 01/11/2025 22:51

Everything. Although I do avoid using it due to cost but when the weather is shit, anything goes in.

Dont wear knitwear though.

Yes this, although mine has a delicate programme and i do.dry my older cardigans that i just knock about the house in.

DappledThings · 01/11/2025 22:53

Everything unless the label specifically says not to. I hang everything outside when I can but otherwise it's on lot.

Never had anything shrink.

Coffeeishot · 01/11/2025 22:54

I do hang washing out when I can even in winter if it is sunny.

notacooldad · 01/11/2025 23:05

Everything except polo shirts.

longtompot · 01/11/2025 23:35

I just dry towels and flannels in there usually. Other clothes if needed urgently, but not had to for quite a while
Oh, pillows if I wash them! And the dogs bed when she was still with us

rainbowsparkle28 · 01/11/2025 23:40

Generally just towels and bedding as they are big and take a long time to air dry and very limited drying space (live in a flat). And clothes if needed urgently such as pair of jeans but not really otherwise for clothing as don’t want to damage or shrink them.

mathanxiety · 01/11/2025 23:50

Everything that can go in the dryer goes in. The laundry instruction tag on every piece of clothing, towel, and all bedding indicates whether a dryer is appropriate or whether to line dry. Most of what I own goes in.

WonderlandWasAllAHoax · 01/11/2025 23:51

Everything. Never had any issues in over 20 years.

BertieBotts · 01/11/2025 23:54

Everything. It's a heat pump one and they run at a lower temperature. I was cautious at first but then over time I would accidentally put stuff in and it was always fine.

It doesn't shrink stuff any more than the washing machine always did, and it puts it out lovely and soft, smelling nice and basically looking like it's ironed as long as I fold it fairly quickly.

WithIcePlease · 01/11/2025 23:55

Everything except trainers
Including polyester mixes, polyester, 100% cotton shirts, jeans, socks pants.

You can 100% dry polyester, the only exception for me is if it's something very sheer/netty and will just dry fine on a hanger in the utility

I've never shrunk anything

I have done cashmere and also woollen jumpers - there's a woollens on my dryer (4mimutes long I think) but another dryer I use sometimes has delicates and I'll just put wool on that for 5 mins or so and then on a hanger. It's comes out warm and any creases have fallen out

Honestly, from some of these answers above it sounds that tumble drying is for a few chosen items. For me, it's for almost everything.

What sort of dryer have you got? Mines a condenser so has a sensor.

WithIcePlease · 01/11/2025 23:56

And also it reduces ironing for me. Get stuff out warm and just smooth it out for most stuff

Yes, same here.

Edited

I've never had any damaged or shrunk clothes from tumble drying, seriously. In fact I think it's better because the clothes aren't damp for so long.

lingmerth · 01/11/2025 23:58

Only towels and bedsheets. I only have a basic dryer with a high or low setting so nervous about putting stuff in in case of shrinkage. I have a heated airer with a cover for everything else.

sesquipedalian · 01/11/2025 23:59

Household linens - towels (even in the summer, because I like them to be soft - I am not a fan of the sandpaper towel!) - bedding, tablecloths, clothes except for dresses and delicate things or knitwear. I couldn’t manage without a tumble dryer, although I love the smell of line-dried sheets and clothes. I hate it when the days turn and it’s no longer warm enough to hang washing on the line, or you put it out and it comes in damp so you have to tumble it anyway.

Tryingatleast · 02/11/2025 00:02

I dry a lot on the clothes horse or outside, then put on gif half an hour to get them properly dry. The other night I dried towels because I’d just worked a 12 hour shift and there were none anywhere in the house. The guilt was terrible (environment), but the towels were amazing- the kids all asked about them!! I’d just say don’t chance anything expensive or school jumpers, just in case!!

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/11/2025 00:04

Everything except underwired bras.
