What do you put in your tumble dryer?

Within the last month we have bought a tumble dryer. I'm sure it's amazing, but what do you use yours for? What do you NOT put in there? Ive heard horror stories about clothes shrinking. So far I have put sheets, towels and socks in. I don't want it on all the time, but just need a little help as feel it could be more productive!

Pants and socks. They are so unbearably fiddly to peg out or festoon on a rack. And they take ages to line dry. Gather them all up and tumble dry them while using the line space for fewer, bigger items.

My old condenser did used to shrink things - notably socks! And usually favourite t shirt. So it was mainly used for pants, towles and bedding

the new heat pump will dry everything! Although I’ve not put cashmere in there. I’ve got braver and braver over the year and always sort wash loads out on the basis of drying. I put the delicates in the dryer today for the first time! Came our pristine!

I bloody love it

Not bamboo or viscose - they might be fine once or twice but develop holes over time.

Not cotton with an open weave (cheesecloth type fabric) as it shrinks.

BeeWitchy · 02/11/2025 00:34

I’m doing something wrong them because new tshirts always come out of the dryer shorter and wider than they went in.

I’ve wondered if it’s because the grade cottons used in much of the clothing is cheaper and not as good quality these days. 20 years ago Good cotton tshirts didn’t shrink in one direction and go shapeless.

isitmytime · 02/11/2025 00:55

I save mine for towels, bedding & underwear.
I don’t really use it for clothes as it’s just washing for me and I can air dry everything or hang it out.
I work with people the use it for everything. They just adjust the temperature depending what’s going in

sleepwouldbenice · 02/11/2025 01:00

Just towels on a regular basis
then occasional emergency eg back from holiday with lots of washing and it’s raining so no space to dry it all

marilyntaylor · 02/11/2025 01:00

I got my first tumble dryer in 1989 and have used them ever since for everything apart from really delicate and woollen clothing. In all that time I have never shrunk anything.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 02/11/2025 01:03

I think in 30 years I’ve shrunk one item of clothing, but it was by washing it too hot, not by tumble drying it.

I tumble dry anything that says on the label that it’s ok to tumble.

CrotchetyQuaver · 02/11/2025 01:09

Not lingerie or wool, otherwise just about everything.

tinyspiny · 02/11/2025 01:21

Anything that you can tumble dry but I do follow wash instructions and use low heat for items that need it , which aside from towels and bedding is most loads .

Kirbert2 · 02/11/2025 01:44

Everything.

Even things that have a don't tumble dry label, I just put them on the gentle setting.

Never had any issues.

FrothyCothy · 02/11/2025 01:48

Since we changed to heat pump, everything goes in there except one long cardigan of mine that’s a bit delicate. Love not having clothes hanging around the house through winter.

LifeSucksBigFatBalls · 02/11/2025 01:50

Bedding, Sheets, Duvets and Towels

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 02/11/2025 01:55

Everything except period pants, tights and fleece blankets/onesies.

DS has a pair of trousers that he doesn't tumble dry as the label says not too and they are his favourite.

treacledan71 · 02/11/2025 01:57

Everything except jumpers. I love mine. Saves on ironing. I even put things in there that are already dry to get creases out for 5 mins.

caringcarer · 02/11/2025 03:16

I tumble all bedding, towels, DC sports wear, jeans, hoodies, socks, pants for DC and DH. I don't tumble much of my stuff except harem pants and leggings. I put dresses on a hanger overnight to dry, I don't dry cotton T shirts as they do seem to shrink in length.

LurcherMumma · 02/11/2025 03:23

I don't put wool or jeans in. I don't normally put in t-shirts with print on them as the print tends to go over time but I risked it today and looked fine. I have just started putting bras in too and had no issues.
The only thing I had shrink was some cotton t-shirts for my toddler (mind you that was my old washer dryer). I did read the label (afterwards - silly me) and it did say not to to be fair.

JustMe2026 · 02/11/2025 03:28

Everything except knitwear

Ask my husband; he would throw everything in but for some reason even when everything was bone dry he would out another cycle on just for good measure.. ended up melting through the tumble drier and breaking it.. so now we don’t have one and use the airer instead 🤣

cordeliavorkosigan · 02/11/2025 03:57

Can on here to say ummm ... my peanut butter and my bananas??
Clothes, obviously...
But you are all serious and helpful.

BobblyBobbleHat · 02/11/2025 05:14

Pretty much everything goes in here, it's brilliant as it means I never really need to iron anything

StrongLikeMamma · 02/11/2025 05:29

None of my clothes! Nothing with lycra.

School uniforms, towels, kids/DHs pants, socks, things like sheets or sports kit in an emergency.

In summer it’s all outside on the line. Now it’s mostly on the heated airer.

GarlicHound · 02/11/2025 05:43

Everything except posh wool and real silk. Less than 1% shrinks, I'd say, though a cotton corduroy skirt did last week. I was pissed off - it was new and that fabric really shouldn't shrink!

I've just got one of those heated airer things - mainly for the posh jumpers, but I'll see how it does with other stuff as well.

You don't put JEANS in?? You must be a glutton for punishment!

I find jeans work in the dryer unless they are stretchy ones which will make them wear out much more quickly. My plain unstretchy denim jeans will shrink but within 5 minutes of wearing they fit.
