What do you put in your tumble dryer?

Within the last month we have bought a tumble dryer. I'm sure it's amazing, but what do you use yours for? What do you NOT put in there? Ive heard horror stories about clothes shrinking. So far I have put sheets, towels and socks in. I don't want it on all the time, but just need a little help as feel it could be more productive!

Pretty much everything but it only goes in for a short while to finish it off if it hasn’t dried completely on the line outside or a clothes horse inside.

Zippedydodah · 02/11/2025 14:37

I was very selective about what went in my old vented tumble dryer but now I have a new-to-me heat pump one I will be using it more but I will still dry woolly jumpers on the clothes horse.

Anything that says can be tumble dried, i do
it all on the low temperature setting.

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 02/11/2025 16:12

All year - towels and pants/socks
Additionally in winter - bedding, pj's, tracksuit bottoms, t shirts

Just towels on a regular basis
then occasional emergency eg back from holiday with lots of washing and it’s raining so no space to dry it all

Why do you only use it in emergencies?

Jollyjoy · 03/11/2025 10:31

I do most things, avoid more of my clothes than the kids. I do feel cheap clothes shrink more and notice it in
some of the kids’ stuff. But I couldn’t live without it!

It would be helpful to know what dryer you bought

especiallu is it heat pump or regular

ButFirstCovfefe · 03/11/2025 11:17

I only put bedding, towels and basics/underwear in.

It’s partly for longevity/shrinkage, but also I think they smell better when line dried.

dontforgetme · 03/11/2025 11:37

Everything except knitwear, denim and my bras.

Timeforabitofpeace · 03/11/2025 14:41

Not socks!

Why not socks? I've always put socks in.

Socks shrink!

InLoveWithAI · 03/11/2025 16:39

Everything.

Only one jumper has ever shrunk.

I do have a heat pump though, so it's much gentler on clothing, and my wallet.

Socks shrink!

I've never had socks, -or anything - shrink. Are they cashmere, or cashmere blend?

BlindSpotForCats · 03/11/2025 16:50

I use a laundrette weekly as we don't have room for a dryer at our place.

I put everything in except for pure woollen jumpers and dry on either medium heat or hot.

Timeforabitofpeace · 03/11/2025 19:40

@KatyaKananiin my TD they shrink!

Icecreamandcoffee · 03/11/2025 19:44

November - March. Everything. If you can't survive the tumble dryer you are not meant to be in my house. Mine has lots of programs including a delicate and a wool program which means it hasn't shrunk anything yet.

Is the programme quite hot? My dryer is like @Icecreamandcoffee 's, different programmes, including for delicates. There's very little it doesn't dry really, and like pp, I've never found that anything has shrunk.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/11/2025 20:04

Towels, bedding, the cat's furry throw, ridiculously long curtains where they could easily lose six inches without it causing an issue (because the alternative would be faffing around shortening them and still having them take weeks to dry), hoodies, things that the cat has moulted on (these go on cold, as the static charge lifts the fluff off), boxers, the occasional cheap dress or cotton shirts.

The bedding, towels and cat throw go on hot, dresses and shirts go on warm, his boxers go on whatever setting the majority of the drying needs.

We don't tumble t-shirts, jeans, knitwear or anything that cost me a lot of money.

Arran2024 · 03/11/2025 20:04

Only ever towels and sheets.

Floundersfin · 03/11/2025 20:41

Everything apart from jumpers and stretchy gym wear type clothes that will shrink. Some coats cannot be tumble dried so check labels carefully.
theyre perfect for bedding and towels. I’ve never had issues with general clothing as long as you don’t leave it on too long most things won’t shrink.

Timeforabitofpeace · 03/11/2025 21:34

@KatyaKananiI admit I’ve never used the TD for socks only! 🙂

CoralPombear · 03/11/2025 21:37

Just bedding and towels. Maybe a bit of school uniform if I’m desperate of a morning and things haven’t dried well overnight. Am a bit scared I’ll shrink things or ruin the logos of T-shirts etc but then again my tumble dryer isn’t the newest.

WonderingWanda · 03/11/2025 21:45

Tights, gym wear, swimsuits, kids school blazers etc anything really synthetic.

andanotherproblem · 03/11/2025 21:48

Everything except jumpers, although I did shrink a shirt recently
