Alan Bates as Gabriel Oak. I thought he was 'a very nice man' at the time. I rewatched FFTMC recently and BAM! Those eyes, that earnestness...

I will raise you with Alan Bates in Whistle Down the Wind. Ended up watching a bit of it for the first time in about 50 years and wow!
Also Cary Grant - he was a 'grown up' when I first watched his films (to me) but now when I look back, he was the epitome of handsome. Looking at the photos I think I may have a type!

This is outing but I've finally realised how hot Colin Firth was back in P&P.

DarkAngel23 · 02/11/2025 02:52

Yes, I had my grown up moment when I rewatched Titanic a few years ago. Despite playing an awful character, Billy Zane was suddenly more attractive than Leo , who just looked like a teenager.

Also had new found appreciation for younger Colin Firth in the original Bridget Jones.

George clooney in Roseanne and young Richard Gere.

I mean George at any age has always been hot!

George Clooney was hot in his ER days and for about 10years after. Then he met Amal and I had eyes only for his wife.

Oliver Reed as Bill Sykes. But to be honest I was always in love with him.
Rod Taylor also in I think it was called The Glass bottom boat , with Doris Day.
I also fancied a very old actor Claude Rains in a Bette Davis film Mr Skeffington.
Of course Gregory Peck. Some Journo said she was in Selfrides when the most beautiful man was standing next to her, she didn't realise till afterwards that it was mr Peck.

Ooh yes!
And pesky Troy is so unappealing

Pesky Troy is, indeed, unappealing. But the sword scene is somehow mesmerisingly sexy. Even though Alan Bates was so hot, and such an obviously decent chap, I could totally see Julie Christie falling for Bad Boy Troy on the basis of that Freudian display.

Back in the day, I was a young teen and the conversation was whether it was Starsky or Hutch. I fancied Starsky, Soul was Hutch

I remember that. All the girls at school were either Team Starsky or Team Hutch.

Most went for Hutch but I had a thing for Starsky. I thought he was so good looking and coolly humorous. Very disappointing when I saw clips from the programme years later and realised what a plonker he was.

Edited to add: That cardigan!!!😱

saltrock123 · 02/11/2025 06:36

Oliver Tobias.

Makemineacosmo · 02/11/2025 06:58

Alain Delon. Never seen anyone like him.

Jeff Bridges.

Steve Mcqueen.

And weirdly, Donald Sutherland.

Oh and Oliver Reed when you rewatch Oliver! (ironically!)

Thought he was a horrible man back then - and how dare you kick a dog! But rewatching with my old lady eyes... oh my!

Still not ok with the dog situation but those big blues are mesmerising. (And hopefully dog was fully trained and acting and not remotely in any danger!)

Hope this posts but if not, if you Google Oliver Reed with Bullseye, there are nice pictures of him mucking around with him off camera, feeding treats etc.

Another vote for Christopher Plummer as Captain von Trapp. No contest!

borntobequiet · 02/11/2025 09:19

George Peppard was the first and probably only film actor I had a crush on, back in the mid 1960s.

I get the Donald Sutherland hotness. It’s weird but it’s real.

BeeWitchy · 02/11/2025 09:35

Denzel Washington. gorgeous then and now.

ITSJUSTBRIDGET · 01/11/2025 21:33

Sam Elliott in roadhouse. In 1989 I just thought he looked so old. Now I look at him then - now - and think bloody hell he was gorgeous

Edited

Yesssss, he is hot AF.

Alain Delon. Never seen anyone like him.

He’s an astonishing looking man, isn’t he??

CrustyBread1977 · 02/11/2025 09:56

I came on to say Michael Palin, however I’ve fancied him since I was about 12 so it’s not like I’ve only recently appreciated him.

On the other hand: Robert Wagner! My auntie used to have a poster of him on her wall, but I never got it at the time and I just knew him from Hart to Hart.

Do you mean Starsky was a plonker or Paul Glaser was? I think Starsky was just from the early 70s rather than a plonker! The actor did some good work for paediatric AIDS while remaining one of the dullest public speakers in living memory!

I was Team Hutch but think Paul MG has aged well (after considerable tragedy in his life) and was very talented, he was great in the film of Fiddler on the Roof.

There's someone locally with a 1976 Ford Gran Torino, red with the stripe, identical. I was unreasonably excited when I saw it in Tesco's car park a few years ago.

Tom Selleck! I thought he was hairy and hated the whole moustache. Now I can see with my adult eyes that he was hot! And Jon Bon Jovi. All I saw in the day was hair and a style of music I didn’t like

My dd has had a crush on Tom Selleck since she was 5 or 6 and she first saw 3 Men and a baby. It only compounded when she watched him as Richard in Friends as a late teen. Now she's 26 and he is the same age as my dad and she STILL fancies him.
I've always thought he was gross and hairy with a revolting moustache. But, now, as an old lady, I have to admit that Magnum P.I. was pretty hot. I wouldn't tell her that, though.
