Price of clothing

I've seen a gorgeous yellow shirt on the marks and spencer website. Its £119. I wouldn't normally pay that much but it looks expensive. I recently bought some black trousers from a charity shop for £25 and they looked hardly worn and very good quality. The original shop was Reiss and Reiss clothes are expensive and the trousers new from Reuss would be £120.

My own black trousers I bought cheap several years ago and they went baggy and out of shape and no longer smart.

Would you pay £119 for a shirt? Im not going on hiday next year so I can spend my money elsewhere.

I would do if I knew I was going to get a lot of wear out of it.

That would be coat / boots money to me.
Maybe a good jumper. But not on a shirt.

PerkyOchrePeer · 01/11/2025 10:03

Just looked again and it's made of pure cotton which is a shame because I hate pure cotton because it creases very badly just like linen
and I dont buy linen as I have had issues with linen in the past. I usually only buy polycarbonate shirts which dont crease

I found almost identical in a charity shop, but baukjen is really nice quality - it really depends on your budget. I wouldn’t personally.

I did see this but it's too casual and I dont like striped shirts.

I would if I'd wear it a lot and it was good quality

Cotton does crease but not like linen - and the degree depends on the weave, so you could order and give a crush to see how it stands up

mamaduckbone · 01/11/2025 10:11

Personally I wouldn't, but it depends on your budget. £119 to you might be £50 to me. I'd want something a bit more special for that money - to me that shirt is quite basic and boring. But then I'm sure the quality is great.
This is why I love charity shops / Vinted. I bought a Hobbs cashmere mix jumper recently for £10 which would probably be over £100 new and the quality is amazing.

Hohumdedum · 01/11/2025 10:19

Not for a shirt unless it was pure silk or something and I planned to wear it a lot. I might for a cashmere jumper or something. I do try to buy good quality fabrics these days.

SayLessPan · 01/11/2025 10:19

I’ve never shopped at Baukjen, and would never choose to as it seems ineffably bland - so I can’t speak to the quality. But the price is pretty standard for an organic cotton shirt.

I see you’ve now rejected it because of the fabric? I’m surprised anyone would mention the Oliver Bonas shirt in comparison as it’s an entirely different fabric - that’s why it’s cheaper.

TheChosenTwo · 01/11/2025 10:21

I would spend that on a shirt, I wear them a lot and now my cleaner told me she also does ironing as a side hustle all my problems are over 😂

Zempy · 01/11/2025 10:22

I only buy off Vinted these days, with a few exceptions.

I think it’s really changed how I view spending money on clothes.

The thing about Baukjen is that their stuff looks nothing on the hanger but on can be fabulous. It's well made ans well cut.

I tend to go against the grain and spend more on every day much worn stuff than on occasion wear which might be worn three or four times.

MidnightPatrol · 01/11/2025 10:25

This brand often has 20% off days on their website, so I’d probably say the quality is worth the extra money - but, wait a few weeks and you’ll probably be able to get it a bit cheaper…!

Yellow is a very hard colour to wear for most people

GehenSieweiter · 01/11/2025 10:30

I firmly believe in quality over quantity, so if you really feel you'd get enough use out of that shirt and that it's of good quality, then go for it. I'd personally not wear that particular item enough to justify it, as not really a shirt person, however I can see how it would work with different looks.

Q2C4 · 01/11/2025 10:34

It’s a lot for a shirt. The colour is lovely and I only wear natural fibres so I like those things about it, but the cut reminds me of my old school shirts so I’d pass on that basis. However, what is the returns process like? Asking as, if I loved it, I’d order it to try on as long as returning it wasn’t going to be too much hassle.

MumChp · 01/11/2025 10:45

No too expensive for me.

Genevieva · 01/11/2025 10:45

I saw a blouse I liked earlier this year that was in that sort of price bracket. £125 if I remember correctly. I didn’t buy it. Many months later it was reduced to £75 and I was given a £50 John Lewis voucher, so I bought it for what was effectively £25.
