Price of clothing

I've seen a gorgeous yellow shirt on the marks and spencer website. Its £119. I wouldn't normally pay that much but it looks expensive. I recently bought some black trousers from a charity shop for £25 and they looked hardly worn and very good quality. The original shop was Reiss and Reiss clothes are expensive and the trousers new from Reuss would be £120.

My own black trousers I bought cheap several years ago and they went baggy and out of shape and no longer smart.

Would you pay £119 for a shirt? Im not going on hiday next year so I can spend my money elsewhere.

I have dark hair and an olive skin tone so I think yellow would suit me. I have yellow jeans and a yellow jumper

Let me ask people. You go on holiday and think nothing of spending £400 or more, but when it comes to an item of clothing costing £100 or more you say no.. holidays are temporary but a piece of clothing can be kept for years. I've got some clothes I bought 15 years ago and I still wear them

I have spent that sort of money on clothes but I wouldn’t spend it on that shirt because a) you can get great quality shirts for less money, b) the colour is likely to date very quickly and c) it looks like my friend’s school uniform shirt from the 1990s.

Like red, there’s loads of tones of yellow, so there’s one that will suit most people. If you like it and will wear it, buy it.

LifeBeginsToday · 01/11/2025 17:29

I'd spend that on a shirt. My mantra with clothes shopping is less, but better. I'd rather one shirt that is perfect than 6 that aren't.

I get where you’re coming from and I’d spend over £100 on certain items (eg cashmere). But for a cotton shirt it just seems excessive.

I rarely spend as little as £100 on any garment, @PerkyOchrePeer. (Except perhaps a summer vest, or a pair of socks, or an ephemeral something from Zara.) But I have high expectations of my clothes.

PerkyOchrePeer · 01/11/2025 18:12

Just looked at princess diana in yelliw and she looked awful and washed out because she was blonde. Blondes dont suit yellow

Oh, I thought this was going to be a thread about how expensive just every day basics have become, which is a subject that has had me in tears today because I can’t fucking afford anything.
So no, £125 on a shirt would not be for me.

JillMW · 02/11/2025 19:06

Definitely but not from m and s. The chances are you will someone in it everywhere you go.

deirdrerasheed · 02/11/2025 19:10

I like it. As the pp said buy it on the brands website, you'll get a voucher code. If you can afford it fine. Clothing is so expensive now. Im trying to get pieces that I will rewear to death.

Wexone · 02/11/2025 19:20

I would but I am a person who wears shirts a lot I think they are a great layering piece and can be worn dressy or casual. I would look closely at the fabric composition. yes cotton creases but it's a natural fabric that allows your skin ti breath and can be warm. should wash easily too. I am on the fence as its marks and spencer as they are fast fashion and renowned for green washing.
I am a big believer on spending on what you wear every day I wear jeans all the time and have jeans that cost 300e but have years and worn nearly every week. so to me its worth it. I wouldn't spend it on leggings and a fleece as I don't wear them
plus hate fleeces

Sgreenpy · 02/11/2025 19:28

PerkyOchrePeer · 01/11/2025 09:57

I love it. Its a quality item. If you know youre going to wear it lots then yes.

Sgreenpy · 02/11/2025 19:28

TheendofmrY · 01/11/2025 10:00

This is not as nice as the OP shirt.

Ivy888 · 02/11/2025 19:30

I discovered Vinted about a year ago. I buy brands on Vinted that I find too expensive in the shops but which I know are very good quality. I got some great cloths that way and I think my wardrobe has become a lot more “better quality” that way.
I wouldn’t pay 119 pounds on a new shirt, because I know I can get a very good quality, high end brand shirt on zvibtex for a fraction of that price.

Wyddfa · 02/11/2025 19:30

Yes if you can afford it and it will make you happy. I buy what I like as I don't buy much and I know I'll wear it a lot.

ThatMiddleClassFood · 02/11/2025 19:55

I wouldn't spend £120 on that shirt in particular it's just a basic shirt. I would spend that much on other clothing items just not a plain shirt or i'd try find them cheaper on vinted.

I spend a lot more than £400 on holidays, a lot more but never buy expensive clothes unless it’s a coat/jacket, boots or a bag. To me the holidays are worth it, the clothes are not.

Heidi2025 · 02/11/2025 20:09

Honestly if you can afford it, and you like it. Go for it.

Happyjoe · 02/11/2025 20:12

It's worth what you are willing to pay! If it's good quality and something you'll enjoy for a few years to come then go for it. I have 4 nice tops I've bought are £80, which is way more than I would normally pay but, apart from falling in love with the pattern and fabric, I find that I go back to those over and over again as hang well and feel lovely on. So no regrets whatsoever.

Yeah, they do. Depends on the shade, granted but some blondes look stunning in yellow.

Back21970 · 02/11/2025 22:05

Try and hold off a week or so as the Black Friday deals are coming up.

If you think you’ll get the wear out of it then buy it - better that than buying 3 or 4 so so items - its not an absolute fortune to spend if you can afford it.

I love yellow myself but am fair and look terrible in it unfortunately.

halfandhalfchipsandrice · 02/11/2025 22:23

I would spend that on a blouse, but not that one. Baukjen quality is not that great in my experience and I think it looks like a bog standard yellowy shirt.
