I've seen a gorgeous yellow shirt on the marks and spencer website. Its £119. I wouldn't normally pay that much but it looks expensive. I recently bought some black trousers from a charity shop for £25 and they looked hardly worn and very good quality. The original shop was Reiss and Reiss clothes are expensive and the trousers new from Reuss would be £120.

My own black trousers I bought cheap several years ago and they went baggy and out of shape and no longer smart.

Would you pay £119 for a shirt? Im not going on hiday next year so I can spend my money elsewhere.

I can see nothing special about that shirt but if that's affordable and a useful addition to your wardrobe then why not? You seem to be trying to justify the expense and for many people it depends on how much wear you get out of it. I get bored with the same stuff so might prefer to buy cheaper but more often (I don't mean fast fashion btw!) but others want long lasting wardrobe staples.

As for the holiday comparison.... a trip may give me a lifetime of memories, a blouse not so much.

You lot are talking shit

Blondes can look great in yellow.

It's all down to tone of skin and hair.

I'm blonde and yellow is one of my most complimented colours. I like daffodil yellow best.

dont even know the posters complexion so how can you possibly say no one can carry off yellow?

I look bloody awful in hot pink. Everyone is different.

No way is a basic yellow cotton shirt worth over £100! I would just buy a white Oxford shirt from H&M and use a yellow dye. £30 max. Or wait for that one to be in the sale... I can’t imagine they’ll be sold out!

Having thought about this overnight, I am not going to buy it. I was raised in a family where we did not spend much because we just didn't have the money. Most of my clothes were either from charity shops or hand made by my mum who was a dressmaker. I have a good amount of clothes and dont really need any more and wearing fancy expensive clothes is nit going to enrich my life or nake me more popular because as long as you are neat and tidy, it's your personality which draws people to you, nit what you wear

I would spend that if it was something that I really liked and would wear a lot. I have a couple of Sézane blouses that were around the £100 mark.

The shirt that you’ve picked looks fairly plain, but perhaps the fit is amazing. You won’t know unless you order it and try it on, and also try on other yellow shirts for comparison. Only you can decide whether it’s worth it.

I disagree that what you wear doesn’t enrich your life and draw people to you. Clothing can really affect how you feel about yourself. When you look good, you tend to feel good, and being happy and confident does tend to drawer people to you. Personally, I think it’s worth having a few good pieces in your wardrobe that make you feel amazing.

I agree, I have dark hair and always get complimented when I wear yellow. One of my friends who’s favourite colour is yellow looks washed out when she wears it so she just has a couple of daisy jewellery pieces as she loves the colour.

Let me ask people. You go on holiday and think nothing of spending £400 or more, but when it comes to an item of clothing costing £100 or more you say no.. holidays are temporary but a piece of clothing can be kept for years. I've got some clothes I bought 15 years ago and I still wear them

I spend a lot on holidays because for me they are life experiences. (But I do want to experience new cultures /learn about history etc) on holiday, not just sit around on a beach for a week).
I would spend 100 pounds on a clothing item IF it is something very good quality that I couldn’t cheaper. So for example, I know I can’t get good quality leather shoes or a quality wollen winter coat for 40 pounds, so will pay more for my shoes or a winter coat. BUT I’ve also discovered Vinted and will look for those items on Vinted first. I’ve been lucky and bought as new items on Vinted that people sold because they were too small. I would not pay 100 pounds for a blouse, because I know I can get good quality blouses for way less.

Interesting …

I buy beautiful clothes because I’m obsessed with the craft and skill and connection to the zeitgeist that goes into creating them. And with breathtaking cuts and rare fabrics and extraordinary use of colour and proportion. Clothes (and evolving fashion) have hugely enriched my life for 6 decades - so for me it’s worthwhile to buy the best I can afford or access.

It has never occurred to me to wear clothes for the purpose of making myself popular - that isn’t something that matters to me. I tend to choose individual garments because I fall in love with them - and then perforce have to put them together to make outfits. Experience tells me that how I’m dressed will convey some impression to other people, and perhaps cut through whatever stereotyped view they may consciously or unconsciously form of me from a distance. But essentially I shop for the pleasure of owning wonderful things.

I assume you get that satisfaction from other things, @PerkyOchrePeer?

No i wouldn’t 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yellow is a very hard colour to wear for most people

That depends on the yellow. A gently warm shade rather than an ‘acid’ one suits me well, and I have typical ‘fair Brit’ colouring.

Ontheedgeofit · 03/11/2025 10:03

Make sure yellow is your colour. I personally can’t wear yellow, it’s a difficult colour to wear.

Lastfroginthebox · 03/11/2025 12:16

Never! I live in t shirts most of the time and would never pay more than about £30 for any clothing item other than a waterproof jacket or shoes.

A holiday is an experience and memories can last a lifetime. If you get great pleasure out of clothes, then fair enough, but I'd rather spend money on travel.

Fumingbutfree · 03/11/2025 13:30

I don’t think that you should. I think you should buy a second hand shirt then treat yourself to a tea and cake for £15

Nitgel · 03/11/2025 13:34

I like.baukjen a lot and the sale is usually good. Especially on the next and m and s website so would prob wait for the sale.
