Do all pharmacies close for lunch?

I’ve only ever lived in a small town where all 5 of our pharmacies close for an hour around lunchtime. The pharmacist doesn’t just disappear, the whole shop closes so you can’t even go in and buy anything, even Boots closes (it’s a very small one though)! Do pharmacies in bigger places close for lunch? I can’t imagine them closing the bigger Boots stores for an hour in places like Meadowhall etc.

I have never seen that happen! But I grew up in the city in the north and now live in London.

My local boots closes but there only ever seems to be 1 member of staff and then the pharmacist so I guess it's only fair.

Some have to have a pharmacist in the shop to be open, depending on their license.

Our local Boots closes the pharmacy for lunch for an hour. All other pharmacies stay open. I live in a city so everything stays open so it’s very unusual that this particular Boots closes its pharmacy. I use another pharmacy anyway so it doesn’t bother me.

In my town they do not, the smaller one the pharmacist/owner send someone out to get him lunch, The other have normally two pharmacists on site.

The agreement in the market town near me is that each pharmacist (theres 2 independents) has a different 'lunch hour' so theres always one open but yes the whole shop shuts. You cant give out prescriptions when the pharmacist is on lunch so to save the staff being hassled /shouted at they close. It works fine here but imagine its annoying if you didn't know how it works.

Most of the small ones near me usually have 30 minutes or an hour where the pharmacist is on lunch so you can’t get prescriptions / buy certain drugs but the shops remain open , I don’t know anywhere that actually shuts .

Our local pharmacy closes for an hour at lunch.

The other closest pharmacies are in supermarkets or larger boots store so they don’t close for buying stuff over the counter but there’s about an hour over lunch with no pharmacist cover

Pharmacies have to close if there is only one pharmacist. While they are at lunch no prescriptions can be handed out and none of the goods stored behind the counter can be sold. Rather than have to deal with irate customers it is easier to close.

This. It's easier to close than to get into a discussion as to why you can’t buy something like codeine when the pharmacist is not on duty.

Yes, ours open 9-6, taking one hour lunch when the close. Also closed Saturdays and Sundays.

Have to drive quite a few miles to a pharmacy if you work full time!

We have a smaller Boots and some other smaller pharmacies locally and while the store is open, the actual dispensing of medication is paused, it depends on the shop but it's anytime between 11.30-2pm for around 30 minutes.

Ladybugheart · 31/10/2025 15:34

Our local Boots does. Doesn't seem they can do any trade without a pharmacist. If they're off sick the store closes if they can't get cover pharmacist in
