Spotted on the floor near our back door. Hundreds of tiny bugs. Most aren't moving but quite a few are. I'm about to spray, vacuum and bleach but does anyone know what they are?

I'm not sure why but I can't get a photo to upload.

Where in the world are you? I ask because I think in UK it’s the wrong time of year for insect eggs to be hatching and to me that’s what those tiny things look like. The only time I’ve seen similar was baby spiders.

MysteryNameChange · 31/10/2025 11:46

Could it be eggs hatching from the warmth of central heating and then dying because it's cold?

WilfredsPies · 31/10/2025 11:59

My eyesight is shocking, have they got wings?

Whatsthispls · 31/10/2025 12:02

I'm in England - middle-ish. Just taken an enlarged screenshot - they do have wings.

Do you have any stagnant water nearby? Uncovered water barrel, upturned plant pots or wildlife bowls, blocked guttering?

ThirdStorm · 31/10/2025 12:24

I found a few by my back door this week, not as many as you though. I think I've been overwatering my plants so I've got these little flies. I have brought some fly paper in the hope that will help me get rid of them and will be more careful not to overwater.

AltitudeCheck · 31/10/2025 12:27

Looks like fruit flies. Do you have any fruit that's gone off or a compost pot near by? Also overwatered plants as someone else mentioned. I suspect the warmer days / heating have resulted in a fruit fly orgy/ last hurrah before winter!

Whatsthispls · 31/10/2025 12:45

Thanks. We don't have plants in the house because we always kill them off and no stagnant water or compost nearby. Maybe they are fruit flies though. I've got a compost caddy in the kitchen but there aren't any flies around there.

I've bleached, wiped up and bleached again so hopefully that's the end of them, thanks.
