Please help me remember this - a buffet style restaurant in Leicester Square and Victoria in the late 80s

I remember a big hall / marketplace. You'd go down some stairs and when you got there there would be lots of stalls or buffets with food from either every country in the world, or perhaps only Commonwealth countries? You could go around with your plate and take food from any country stall.

I'm NOT imagining it. I'm SURE I'm not. Does anyone else remember it? There were country flags everywhere. The food wasn't particularly good and the hall was draughty and cold, but as a child I thought it was super exciting.

Does anyone else remember this? What was it CALLED???

Trocadero?

Zempy · 30/10/2025 19:41

Yeah I am thinking Trocadero too. I used to love that place!!!

For some reason that’s making me think of the Swiss Centre in Leicester Square?

B0D · 30/10/2025 19:53

@Bonjamin me too

AFingerofFudge · 30/10/2025 19:58

It was the Swiss centre i think , there was another similar one on Victoria Street too, down the Victoria Station end. I loved it too, and loved the movenpick ice cream they sold!

Flupitude · 30/10/2025 20:48

THE SWISS CENTRE!! Thank you! That was it and YES the ice cream! I'm so glad I'm not the only one who remembers this. It was quite random though wasn't it...

Yes, the Swiss Centre! Used to love the fondue you could get there.

Pollypops1983 · 30/10/2025 20:55

It was the Mövenpick restaurant in the basement of the Swiss Centre. Now the M&M shop building. It was one of my favourite restaurants as a child.

Oh wow I loved the Swiss centre.

They've changed the clock haven't they? Or did, ages ago.
Not lived in London for years and years

I remember my parents going all misty-eyed about the exotic delights of the Swiss Centre back in the 60s, and how exciting the different cuisines were (to be fair, this was before pasta was freely available in their corner of the north); when I visited in the 90s it felt more like a subterranean ice cream parlour but you could still just about see what it had been back then.

Loved the Swiss Centre!
