Can we have a spooky thread of stories where something weird has happened to you/someone you know

I'm trying to get through a breakup and feel bored and sad. I always enjoy the threads on mn where people tell of their weird/spooky experiences which could be woo. Unfortunately I don't have any but I know i and many other posters enjoy these threads!

I have no anecdotes but I really enjoyed Night watch on iPlayer with Daisy May Cooper and her little bro.

When I was 13 I lived at my nans and I'd nap on the settee whilst waiting for my dad to get back from work at 2am. One night whilst lying there with a thin blanket on me I felt the couch cushion under my lower legs and feet press down as though someone had sat on it. Obviously I jumped up and ran straight upstairs to my bedroom 😅 I very quickly remembered that that specific spot on the couch was my uncles. And yes, that uncle had died 10 years previously 😳 remembering that really didn't help when I realised that the bedroom I'd ran to used to be his too😅

I don't remember this ( thank God ) but I believe it to be true as my mum isn't woo at all

Years ago when I was around 3 we moved to a new, small town into an old house. The town was small enough that my parents bumped into the old home owners ( and funnily enough ended up being friends, still are 30 years later )

The woman had asked how we were all getting on in the new house and my mum had said fine, aside from Namechanger has woken up a few times in the night crying, saying there was a woman in the corner looking at her. The old house owner knew immediately which bedroom it was and said that her son had said the same and refused to sleep in that bedroom.... it freaks me put just thinking about it despite not remembering

The same house, my sister had her own room ( I shared with another sibling ) and one night she refused to sleep in her room, she was hysterical. She ended up in our room and that same night a heavy cabinet had fell down directly where my sister would of been sleeping. My parents said it would of killed her had she been in there. She would of been around 6 or 7 at the time

My 2 dc who are now teens both say they remember when they were little and had their own rooms hearing a big crashing sound in the house as if some cupboards had fallen off the wall or something. Me and their dad, my exdh, didn't wake and heard nothing. The next day they said they were surprised to find nothing was out of place but they both maintain that they heard it.

I actually sent this to Danny Robins! I go back fairly regularly but haven’t seen him again in over a year. Just can’t explain it.

“Hello, Danny,
We’ve recently moved to Perth (Scotland) and I’m thoroughly enjoying discovering our new city. I came across Greyfriars Burial Ground whilst out walking today. With graves going back to the 1500s, it’s a beautiful, tranquil place.
It snowed here on Wednesday night and I saw one other set of human footprints in the snow, with a dog walking alongside in the same direction as me: made me smile, dog prints back and forth, back and forth. We sadly lost our dog three years ago but I always said she did 5 steps to my every 1.
His owner was engaged with his phone so I passed without saying anything.

As I was approaching the gate to leave, I came across a man sitting on a bench next to the path. Smiled and said “hello”. He smiled back and replied, “y’alright?” As I turned right onto the exit path maybe 50/60 seconds later, I glanced backwards (as women do.) No-one there. It only occurred to me a minute or two later that there were no footprints other than mine in the snow next to the bench. I walked around the path again and the only other prints in the snow were mine, the dog walker’s and his dog. No third set of human prints. How did a man get onto a bench without leaving footprints in the snow?
Best wishes,
Carrie“

I used to work in a big old house. Every time I was at the kitchen sink I’d feel a presence rush behind me, and would stay there right behind me until I left the room. I worked nights there too and at 2am I’d often feel a really cold ‘hand’ touch my face. I would ignore it to not give the spirit a reaction 😂😂 but inside I would feel very uncomfortable

FettleOfKish · 28/10/2025 20:22

I’m told this as I was only a toddler at the time, but for a time my Mum often found that my bedroom nightlight was off when she went to check on me, but the bulb hadn’t gone, she could just switch it back on. One day I woke up and told her that Billy had been to see me and turned the light off. Billy was what I called my Great Grandmother (because I couldn’t say Lily). Billy had died a few months earlier.

I do remember the room and where my cot was and Billy sitting in the opposite corner, but of course I don’t know if that memory was from before she died.

Billy was a stickler for turning lights off in life and didn’t have much truck for nightlights.

There was another long period of fucking weird stuff when we lived in another house and I was an early teen, but I’ve sort of blocked most of that out.

FettleOfKish · 28/10/2025 20:23

Also Nightwatch with Daisy May and Charlie Cooper is great. Not so much for the spooky stuff (Uncanny is better for that) but I’m really enjoying watching the relationship between them.

Tangelablue · 28/10/2025 20:45

Watching nightwatch now. Nice easy watching show.

I was 12 and my dad was working away, so just my mum me and my sister at home in our bungalow. In the middle of the night I woke up. I laid in bed wondering what had woken me, then I heard a voice! I was scared to death, so I ran to wake my mother. She told me I’d been dreaming and to go back to bed. Convinced I’d heard something I went into the living room and peeked through the curtains. A man was standing right there. Jesus, was I petrified.

I think I have told this story on here before on here. When I was a student in Edinburgh I used to walk from our flat on the Royal Mile to the university every day with my then boyfriend. Almost every day we passed an older lady sitting on a bench beside Greyfrars Bobby with all her belongings in carrier bags and a shopping trolley. Not that unusual around there except she was always nicely dressed and made up. We used to smile and nod to her because, as I say, we saw her a lot. We called her the bag lady and did wonder what her story was.

In the spring we went to York for a weekend. We saw the sights and wandered around including the Minster. In the undercroft of the Minster we were looking at the tombs when we realised that in there with us was our bag lady. Nicely dressed as usual, without her bags. She smiled, we smiled.

In the late summer we were in London, it was a difficult time, he was going home to Canada, we weren’t sure what would happen. In those pre-internet days we were looking at letters and very short phone calls. We were, for some reason, walking through Belgravia deep in conversation. Suddenly we both noticed, walking towards us was our bag lady, nicely dressed, no bags. Again she smiled at us as she passed, clearly she recognised us.

I’ve always wished that we had spoken to her to find out her story but secretly I think of her as some sort of guardian angel and I’m glad that hasn’t been spoiled. (Not a very good guardian angel because we did part in the end).

Uncanny podcast on bbc sounds is the gift that keeps giving for this sort of thing.

mu story which I’ve told here before is that my hairbrush went missing. Couldn’t find it for 2 days. One day ds and I were sat in the lounge and I was moaning about it and got really annoyed that it “couldn’t just banishing thin air”.

When ds and I went to bed about an hour later it was there - snack bang in the middle of the landing.

Our student flat on the Royal mile was next door to Gladstone’s Land, a National Trust property dating from the 1600’s. Every night I would hear people stomping up and down the stairs in Gladstones Land, just through the wall. I assumed that there were flats in the upper floors above the museum. I visited a few years later and chatted to the staff. Nobody had lived in the building for decades and it was locked up every night. Very heavy footed ghosts.

Late 1980's and friends of ours had a long driveway with various running livestock including an ostrich which would often follow us running alongside car on approach to house. One day I remember him appearing and my exact words were 'he looks different'. Next thing I notice hes gathering speed and instead of pulling up he keeps running straight into front door head first killing himself instantly. None of us knew why.

Allromanticsmeetthesamefate · 28/10/2025 21:29

This is more a bit weird but spooky but I can’t fathom a reasonable explanation so it does pop into my head from time to time.

I have 3 DD all teens, ranging from 15 to 19, we moved down south for DH’s job when they were younger, 6, 8 and 10. They still have a great relationship with DH’s parents but before we moved they often went there for sleepovers, sometimes for a whole half term or a long weekend.

In-laws house is a bungalow surrounded by other bungalows up a private road. It has a large, all round garden and the neighbouring house has a large field so it does feel quite rural.

All 3 girls from their initial moving ages to now as almost young adults swear that they have all seen a bear out of the window of the room they stayed in, eldest more than once, the younger pair a couple of time together and then also on their own. It wasn’t always in the same place or position or speed. Often it was standing up staring into the house, it has been seen bounding through the field and slowly waking around.

None of the reasonable explanations (neighbours dog, BIL out for a smoke, maybe a deer) are what they saw, they are all insistent, even if their now grown up rational heads that it was a bear, clear as day.

Youngest now says it’s the reason she suddenly stopped wanting to stay there before we moved and right enough 9 months before (and after a time visiting on her own) she suddenly decided she didn’t want any more sleepovers and point blank refused to go back unless she was definitely coming home at the end of a visit.

I've seen a shadow figure at the end of my bed. I turned to my DH at the time and said did you see that? He described exactly what I saw. A man about 5ft 10inch wearing a trilby hat with a 1920-30 suit. The figure shrunk and disappeared behind the wall to the next bedroom. We could not explain it or the fact we'd both seen the same thing. We both have no belief in the paranormal.

My dm always told a story from her childhood during WW2: a neighbour came into her dad’s greengrocer shop, white as a ghost and asking to speak to my gran. The neighbour had been out in her front garden when she thought she saw her adult son further down the road. She called out to the man, who was in full army uniform, and he turned and smiled, and raised his hand in greeting. The neighbour was overcome with a feeling of well-being and as the man carried on walking towards her, she realised yes, it was her son, back from the front! She ran back to the garden path but when she got past the hedge, and looked up the road - her son had gone. The street was empty.

My mum said she had never seen anyone looked so visibly shaken, and she and my gran made her a cup of tea and she sat in the shop for the afternoon.

Not long after, the lady received a telegram informing her that her son had been killed in action. Inevitably on the very day that she had “seen him” on the street outside their family home.

Spooky and very sad.
