Out of date milk

I found some milk in the fridge yesterday dated the 14th October, unopened
what would you do with it? I’m surprised when I mentioned it to a colleague and the general consensus!

bin it, without opening?
sniff it, taste it and use it?

I wouldn't want to waste it. Assuming it's cows milk I would probably go to my nearest farm and try and feed it to a cow. If they aren't interested I would take it as a sign it's no good and pour it back into the grass for them to eat.

BarnacleBeasley · 28/10/2025 09:52

I don't think it would be useable, but I would pour it down the sink and recycle the bottle.

buffyreboot · 28/10/2025 09:53

Yep standard cows milk in a v cold fridge

The good thing with dairy is you know when it's gone off. If it smells fine is try to use it up today.

Ok…

SeaAndStars · 28/10/2025 10:00

I'd sniff it, taste it and if it was ok I'd use it.
I would be wary of using it in a recipe or heating it as I've found that out of date but ok milk can turn when it's heated.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 28/10/2025 10:02

I would taste it. Milk doesn't turn automatically due to the date on it - if it's been kept somewhere warm it can go off whilst still in date; if it's been refrigerated since purchase it can keep for quite a while.

It it tastes OK, it's OK.

Agree with this! You might find it tastes ok on cereal but curdles if you put it in your tea. I would definitely give it the sniff test, it might well be fine.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/10/2025 10:11

If it passes the sniff test it’s fine

BauhausOfEliott · 28/10/2025 10:34

If it’s off, it’ll smell.

Digdongdoo · 28/10/2025 10:39

Smell it and see. I'd also boil it if unsure, it will split if it's off.

Crinkle77 · 28/10/2025 12:24

I'd try it in tea or coffee and see if there's any floaty bits on top. I wouldn't have it on cereal or as a glass of milk to drink.

Growlybear83 · 28/10/2025 12:24

I wouldn’t try anything that was two weeks past a use by date.

arethereanyleftatall · 28/10/2025 12:25

For milk I go by smell not the date.

nannyl · 28/10/2025 12:28

My milk doesnt have a useby date on it.... its in glass bottles from the milkman.

However i KNOW milk that old in my fridge would be off. (my milkman milk doesnt last a week like supermarket milk seems to)

I would open the milk, sniff it, (i'd expect it to be off) then tip it down the sink.
In the unlikley event it was not off i'd use it.

Its very easy to tell if milk is off or not.

buffyreboot · 28/10/2025 12:38

So I opened it, sniffed it, tasted it and used it. It tastes fine
colleagues - horrified

You did right. We waste way too much food by not applying common sense. That said, it probably will go off quite quickly now it's opened so I'd use it up pronto.

One said they would have just thrown it and not even opened it

Really? Even if there was nothing wrong with it?

whatwasthatnoise · 28/10/2025 13:33

I have colleagues who don't use the last inch of milk in a bottle (that's still in date) and they helpfully leave it on the side rather than put it back in the fridge for us normal people to use. They will also throw out apples past their 'use by date' on the packet 🤯

I'm very funny with milk and only drink if it has at least 48hrs remaining. How you can bring yourself to gamble your health on something so inexpensive I found incredible.
To the person who said take it to a field and feed a cow - actually, I have no words.

They’d throw liquids in the rubbish. They’re a twat regardless.

It’s not gone off though? I’m not gambling with anything! It’s either off or it’s not

‘…gamble your health’? LOL. It’s milk. It smells when it’s off.

Things that can make you sick often do, evolution is a wonderful thing.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 28/10/2025 13:44

I’d open and sniff and then if it smells ok try it in my tea. I’d agree with others that it might curdle even if it passes sniff test, if it is off then I’d pour down sink, rinse carton and recycle as normal. I think it’s really poor form to put liquid filled containers in the bin. It’s not like they vanish, I bet lots of bin men can tell horror stories sbout exploding cartons of whatever when it’s crushed by the hopper at the back. Then they’ve had to work rest of shift with off milk or whatever covering them.
