Out of date milk

I found some milk in the fridge yesterday dated the 14th October, unopened
what would you do with it? I’m surprised when I mentioned it to a colleague and the general consensus!

bin it, without opening?
sniff it, taste it and use it?

Well cows are adult mammals and as such have no need for lactation. So I'm with OP.

Thanks Elivis 👍 nice to have a bit of common sense round here

Humans have no need for cows milk. There's some common sense for you

I just like it in my brew, it wasn’t meant to be a big debate about drinking cows milk!

I wouldn't want to waste it. Assuming it's cows milk I would probably go to my nearest farm and try and feed it to a cow. If they aren't interested I would take it as a sign it's no good and pour it back into the grass for them to eat.

What ??

I'm very funny with milk and only drink if it has at least 48hrs remaining. How you can bring yourself to gamble your health on something so inexpensive I found incredible.
To the person who said take it to a field and feed a cow - actually, I have no words.

I'm with you on the 48 hour thing.

I find milk makes me very easily queasy. There is nothing quite like the pong of old milk and I cannot cope with even the faintest harbinger of it.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/10/2025 18:54

A sniff will soon tell you whether it’s gone off. If so, pour down the sink.

MessyToast · 28/10/2025 18:59

I'd bin it. I have a bad sense of smell and a thing about milk, even if it smells ok to me I sometimes don't use it until I can get someone else to smell it. But 2 week old milk, I wouldn't even open it. My Dad is the total opposite. He uses it even when it smells because it's apparently just marketing 🤢

So I opened it, sniffed it, tasted it and used it. It tastes fine
colleagues - horrified

Two weeks out of date? Was it definitely the 14th, not 24th and the date has been rubbed away a bit? I can’t imagine milk would be good 2 weeks after the date, even allowing for the manufacturers being on the cautious side and putting the date a little before what they actually think.

nicelongbath · 28/10/2025 19:06

I find supermarket homogenised milk lasts way beyond the use by date but non-homogenised milk turns incredibly quickly. I would love to know why this is!

Owly11 · 28/10/2025 19:08

Open it, sniff it and use it if ok.

Oh fantastic MrsTerryPratchett, I bet carbon monoxide doesn't faze you in the slightest then

Often =/= always.

I’m near the fridge in 2 mins so will double check…

Take it home and make cottage cheese! Lots of youtube videos about how to do this - incredibly simple. Essentially you heat the milk to boiling point, take it off the heat and let it cool a little. Then stir in a tablespoon of two of acid such as lemon juice or vinegar, and the curds separate from the whey. Fun kitchen chemistry

buffyreboot · 28/10/2025 19:41

Definitely the 14th

I'd smell it. If it smells ok I'd use it until it starts to smell off.

Interesting. I don’t think I’d have even smelled it because I’d have assumed it would smell awful. I don’t stick rigidly to dates, and will happily give things a sniff to see if they’re good, but I wouldn’t have considered that 2 week out of date milk would be.

Carbon monoxide doesn't usually come pasteurised

centaury · 28/10/2025 20:16

The bigger the bottles you buy, the longer it seems to last (assume a 6pt stays colder than a 2pt). Also, where you get it from matters. Some shops where the deliveries generally stay out too long, you notice that e.g. bagged salad and fruit and milk go off much more quickly. I've bought milk that's been perfectly fine 2 weeks past its date! (I was very surprised.) I have also bought milk that was off a day before its date. Have to use your nose and eyes...

I mean at least I know the fridge works well Grin

Sniff it and go from there.

if it’s a bit sour, consider making brilliant scones.

CluelessAboutBiology · 28/10/2025 21:51

I would tip it down the sink. I wouldn’t sniff it as I am unable to smell milk! If I were to drink off milk, I’d certainly know about it (bleurgh) but I just can’t smell milk that’s gone off.

I can’t hear the smell of off milk (& other dairy products) to the point that I’m almost phobic about it. I don’t like drinking milk on its own anyway. - I only use it for cooking or in tea/coffee. Don’t really like cereal. I think it stems from a stomach upset secondary to off-milk as a child.
I make sure I buy the bare minimum I need & use it up way before useby date.
I’d either leave it for my husband to test +/- use, but if he was away I’d pour it down the sink ( without sniffing it ) but recycle the carton.
