Out of date milk

I found some milk in the fridge yesterday dated the 14th October, unopened
what would you do with it? I’m surprised when I mentioned it to a colleague and the general consensus!

bin it, without opening?
sniff it, taste it and use it?

Was the milk two weeks out of date?

I’d open and sniff and then if it smells ok try it in my tea. I’d agree with others that it might curdle even if it passes sniff test, if it is off then I’d pour down sink, rinse carton and recycle as normal. I think it’s really poor form to put liquid filled containers in the bin. It’s not like they vanish, I bet lots of bin men can tell horror stories sbout exploding cartons of whatever when it’s crushed by the hopper at the back. Then they’ve had to work rest of shift with off milk or whatever covering them.

And milk won’t stay fresh on your clothes!

Halfquarterbag · 28/10/2025 13:48

It’s surprising it’s fresh a fortnight out of date, but it’s a nice surprise.

I wouldn't want to waste it. Assuming it's cows milk I would probably go to my nearest farm and try and feed it to a cow. If they aren't interested I would take it as a sign it's no good and pour it back into the grass for them to eat.

That’s silly!

You have to get the cow’s teats into a bucket of the milk and anti-milk the milk up into the udder.

My milk doesnt have a useby date on it.... its in glass bottles from the milkman.

However i KNOW milk that old in my fridge would be off. (my milkman milk doesnt last a week like supermarket milk seems to)

I would open the milk, sniff it, (i'd expect it to be off) then tip it down the sink.
In the unlikley event it was not off i'd use it.

Its very easy to tell if milk is off or not.

I’ve just cancelled my milk man deliveries because the milk wasn’t even lasting 3 days anymore.

I think milk in glass bottles has the date embossed on the lid.

I always find this incredibly hard to see/read, so play a form of Russian Roulette with my milk. Never had a horrible surprise yet.

I've just had a look at all my old lids and definitely nothing (I keep them to recycle with foil)

I don't get my milk from milk and more or similar. I get it direct from a local farm (3miles away) who deliver it themselves to local addresses so maybe thats why?

My milk does not even last a week (which is not a problem when it's delivered 3 times a week)

‘…gamble your health’? LOL. It’s milk. It smells when it’s off.

Things that can make you sick often do, evolution is a wonderful thing.

Oh fantastic MrsTerryPratchett, I bet carbon monoxide doesn't faze you in the slightest then

Not sure I would have taken that risk but I'm glad it worked out for you

I'm very funny with milk and only drink if it has at least 48hrs remaining. How you can bring yourself to gamble your health on something so inexpensive I found incredible.
To the person who said take it to a field and feed a cow - actually, I have no words.

What a total waste.

I mean I figure milk is either off or it’s not
if it was off then definitely wouldn’t have drunk it

If it was soured, I'd make soda bread.

What do you imagine happens to the milk in that 48 hours before it's out of date? Very daft.

You’re being ridiculous and wasteful.

When I was a kid we had milk delivered in glass bottles with no sell by dates and no fridges either. We kept ours on the tiled floor of the pantry.

If milk is off, it smells off and if you drink it, it could make you poorly. Otherwise, it’s not a risk to your health. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Why does the thought of cows drinking cows milk render you speechless. Technically that's what it's for

I must be doing something right as I've not had a single illness, cold, flu or sickness in the last 40 years.

As to being wasteful, I rarely have any milk left over but have no fear, if any left in future I'll send it over to the OP. Might take a few days but she won't mind.

Ahh yes of course my mistake, I often see cows wondering round the supermarket drinking milk from the bottles

You've not been ill once at all for 40 years? Do you leave the house?

An adult cow?

Best find a calf.

Well cows are adult mammals and as such have no need for lactation. So I'm with OP.
