Just that really. In Scotland. Ds has moved to another area of Scotland for Uni.
Needs Urgent GP appt. Not A&E issue but Urgent (MH issue).
Can he see a GP in Uni city if not registered does anyone know please?

Yes, he will need to register with the practice in the Uni city as a ‘temporary resident’. He could also register permanently with that practice and been seen ASAP.

@IkaBaar thank you. I think it would be temp resident as he is likely to come home but it needs seeing to now. would temp resident status mean he'd be seen more slowly than permanantly, as a rule?

I don't think it will delay him being seen. Just get him to ring or call into the University Health Centre and they will help him sort it out.

Sorry this is England but DD needed an urgent appt and hasn't registered at uni yet so rang 111 who got her a same day GP appt at urgent care. I would try that route first if possible as they can see where there is capacity

Nearly50omg · 28/10/2025 13:25

Has he even rung the local gp surgery and asked them? For goodness sake he’s an adult and needs to be seen medically so why isn’t doing the basics on ringing gp surgery and speaking to them or going in?🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Nearly50omg · 28/10/2025 13:26

Each area in Scotland is like a different country so depends on where he is as to the rules they have. He might have to ring 111 and get an out of hours gp appointment at the local hospital depending on what the gp surgery says

abdnhiker · 28/10/2025 13:34

My son was not able to get an appointment with the local GP last year (in Glasgow, he was in university halls), even though it was urgent, until he registered with the practice (which took 24 hours, and him showing up ill at the surgery - he’d had his drink spiked and was throwing up for three days).

There is no university health centre at his uni.

If it’s urgent, get him to call 111. They’d be better placed to help him get a GP appointment.

@Nearly50omg he is having a mh problem and he is also Autistic.
He needs support & I am trying to help him access that.

@Nearly50omg sorry, pressed 'send' too soon...

It's Dundee city centre (& Abertay Uni) area.

Have you checked with the Uni what help is available? It may be on their website.

In England you can register a temporary address even if your on holiday and access local gp surgeries. Hopefully it’s the same in Scotland.
