Winter abroad

Thinking of semi-retiring in the new year and looking to spend two or three months abroad on a budget. I honestly have zero clue on where to go—where is the cheapest place that still offers a reasonable lifestyle and facilities?

Does anyone do this? Do you have any tips or ideas?

Where have you been that you enjoyed?
I also have to ask, is this anything to do with the clocks going back?

I haven't traveled for years due to family circumstances, so that is quite a bit of the motivation. Have a new found freedom i want to exploit!

I fancy Vietnam. I just love it there. I would have to learn the language though and currently haven't got time for that.

Have you got EU citizenship? If not, remember that you'll be restricted to 90 days within a 6 month period.

Places like Benidorm are very popular, you could probably find somewhere quieter if that's not what you're looking for.

Malta is also a good choice - good value, good weather, English speaking, you used to see very cheap long term apartment rentals in travel agents windows, I don't know if Airbnb or booking.com is the place to look these days. You'd probably want somewhere where there's a decent supermarket near by so you can feed yourself cheaply.

Following as I’m planning to escape in my campervan for a decent stint next year. I fancy France first and maybe Norway!

Peachykeenclean · 26/10/2025 18:36

Don't have EU citizenship, and that's a great point, as I would probably want to save those 90 days for a possible campervan trip in the summer. So, outside the EU for winter is probably a better choice. Thank you for bringing that up as I had no idea

We are going to Mauritius for 2 weeks in December and I read that they've introduced a retirement visa. Take a look!

If you're looking at going in winter and want to also go in the summer, its 90 days in a rolling 180, so if say you go January to March, by July, those days will start to expire. There's apps that work it out for you if need to know.

Panama or Costa Rica if you don’t mind a long flight.

@Peachykeenclean I've had a VW T5 for a few years now - extremely underused for camping - just carting my dogs round day to day. Am used to driving the van everywhere, but think I may need something a little bigger to travel to Europe, ie a small motorhome. The cost of hire is extortionate though and I really can't justify it when I already have the van. Sadly mine didn't come with factory fitted aircon, which is very prohibitive in the summer (with dogs)-I've spent a year researching and splashed out on a portable one and also some solar panels, so will be off on a trial run somewhere in next few months. Have fun - need update on your T6 experience!

Was in the Algarve recently and there’s quite a few options for long term lets in winter, I fancy wintering there (we can get visas easily as not working any more, or rather won’t be by then
