Had the police around earlier to fill in a quick questionnaire in regard to a serious incident that just happened locally. As we live on the main road they wanted to know if we saw anything, the usual. My mum then pipes up that’s she’s been through this years ago when they were investigating a murder in our home town (not our current hometown) I was shocked as I’m 37 and never heard of this murder in my whole life, granted I was 3 at the time but still… things like that usually spread for years. I then went down a rabbit hole, turns out the murder happened right across the street from our old estate. The woman murdered was called Penny bell. She was found stabbed more than 50 times in her car, they still haven’t caught the killer. I never knew this whole time and it kinda threw me.
what’s the most shocking thing to happen in your hometown?

The British army burned the city centre to the ground, beat and robbed civilians and shot at and cut the hoses of firemen trying to control the fires.

What ? ? ? ? ? ? ? This has to be somewhere in Ireland fadó fadó. Is it?

My Mum's best friend from school was murdered by her husband who then killed himself. So a double tragedy that left 2 young kids behind. My Mum is still in touch with the kids.

Back in the late 90s, a friend of mine was caught speeding on his motorbike on the A96. He was called to court in Elgin on a Monday morning and his was the last case to be called. We sat for about three hours listening to case after case of ABH, GBH, aggravated assaults etc. There was about 15 of them, all from the previous week or two. I made my mind up at that point never to go out drinking in Elgin of a weekend!

Joanna's was a bit wild back in the day. Is it still a nightclub ?

A friends sister was absent from school and was questioned by police - it transpired that a baby’s body had been found in woodland Sad

The case was solved recently; the poor woman had been suffering from severe PND. Tragic case.

Penny Bell was found in Gurnell leisure centre car park if I recall correctly. It's sad. Ealing as a borough has suffered many murders including Alice Gross.

I came on here to say Alice. I still never walk on the canal alone where she went missing.
i didn’t know that about Penny Bell, just been reasoning about it. How awful.

We had a “rough family” in the village that lived in a beautiful, massive house but were… characters. Stuff everywhere, garden full of dog poo, kids always in trouble at school. The eldest daughter was in my class.

One night their home got machine gunned, with some of the family seriously injured. Turned out they were high level drug dealers. The dad had killed some one AND was running a private ambulance business where it turned out he was stealing from the families when he was collecting their loved ones.

Not that fadó fadó. Wow, Cork. My DNA is all Cork. I'd never heard about it. Didn't do that in school history. I think we were mostly taught old English curriculum history in the 70's 80's. I remember a lot of Henry VIII. Shocking really. Wonder what the Irish curriculum is like now. Different I'm sure

Editing to say, just realised my granny would have been 20 when that happened. Jesus

Double murder, 15 years ago.

The murder of Ann Heron in 1990 who had been sunbathing in her garden. They still have no idea who did it. It's a haunting case.

I lived near to Rillington place, home of the infamous John Christie. It was razed to the ground and renamed. My auntie narrowly escaped being one of his victims when he invited her by letter to view some rooms he had for rent. (Also not far from Grenfell Tower.) The alley/walkway to my flat was the crime scene of my neighbours daughter being stabbed to death by a paranoid schizophrenic. Also another neighbours daughter was raped there.

Same!

We moved here in 2019 and not long after a man killed his two children, wife and dog with a rifle in a house the next village over. Oh and himself, the piece of shit.

Then a teenage girl from a nearby town was murdered by her aunt's boyfriend and her body found in the woods I walk my dog in. It was in the news a fair bit at the time.

Nothing major since then. We did have a big police showdown with dogs at the end of our road one night last year with some lads who'd been going around breaking in to cars.

BippidyBoppety · 22/10/2025 09:10

Watched the man from number 9 stab and kill the man from number 8 from my bedroom window (row over car parking).

Watched the helicopters circling the area where Bibbi and Nicole were found from my bedroom window.

I don't live there anymore.

ohtowinthelottery · 22/10/2025 09:12

In my home town, a man that I knew as a friend of a friend, and who had gone to my school (although he was a couple of years above me) murdered both his parents by beating them to death with a hammer on their heads.

My home town? Going Conservative after being Labour for ever. Did it improve their lot? Not a bit of it. Quelle surprise.

My neighbourhood in Melbourne? All very tame. A shark was spotted in the bit of Port Phillip Bay near me and escorted from the premises. Ten years ago.

Two people murdered an elderly man, happened across road when I lived in my childhood home. They caught them thankfully.

letmehaveathink · 22/10/2025 09:15

A couple of Christmasses ago, a local workplace had a night out at our local bistro. A male went into the loos with two females and they both gave him head at the same time. Both women were married. After the "event" and more drinks, both women became paranoid that the other would tell their husband and a huge scrap ensued, whereupon the Police were called. This is a very well-to-do workplace (think Councillors).

We also have a local woman here, who is married, but frequently shags men in the loos at the pub. Believe it or not, she's very affluent, owns her own business, has a huge house etc, and this is a very posh town. Her DH is a well known business man here too. I have no idea if he knows.

2 people sent down for a hit and run that killed an elderly man.

When I lived in Madrid in the eighties, ETA blew up a busful of military men on the corner of my street. I passed by 10 minutes earlier.

Disappearance of Lee Boxall back in the 80s.

I am glad you mentioned Lee. I was working nearby at the time and I’ve never forgotten him, though I never knew him. A policeman told me that no money had been taken from his bank account, which suggested he hadn’t planned anything. Just no trace at all. That suggested he was a victim of something horrible. Poor young man and I feel for his parents.
