Crumpets

Love, hate, or indifferent?

My sister really loves them but I don't.
She tries to convert me every time but I remain unmoved.
Am I missing something? 😄

Ohh yes - butter and marmite please

TheTecknician · 21/10/2025 23:17

Potato cakes or potato farls are also a good toasted snack. I don't know if they actually contain potato. Soda farls similarly tasty. Good quality salted butter is a must in all cases. Includes muffins, scones, waffles and fruit teacakes - I admit I'm not a fan of the latter.

My Yorkshire grandma always called
them pikelets. We live much further south and never heard them called that here but you do sometimes see packs of thin ones sold as pikelets.

This has made me think I want to get my sourdough starter booted back up (I haven't used it for a few months) and make some crumpets with it at the weekend.

Have to be warburtons, well toasted and with real butter

StElwicksNeighbourhoodAssociation · 21/10/2025 23:54

Another yes from me, can't have butter so have spread and marmite or golden syrup. My go-to comfort food.

duckduck1992 · 22/10/2025 00:00

I thought I didn’t like crumpets for years, then maybe a year or 2 ago I thought I’d try one again as my kids like them. Oh my god I loved it and went through a terrible phase of eating about 4 a day. Don’t eat them as much now because I actually put weight on because of them. I love them

Growlybear83 · 22/10/2025 00:08

I love crumpets occasionally, but I like them very lightly toasted, with just a scrape of marmite, and no butter.

EconomyClassRockstar · 22/10/2025 00:24

They need to be toasted over an open fire and literally dripping in butter. THEN they're food of Gods and one of my fondest childhood memories.

mellicauli · 22/10/2025 00:41

Some of the cheap ones taste a bit too much of baking powder - not something to be scrimped on.

Agree they need to be toasted twice so they are crispy on the outside and then soft and running with salty butter on the inside.

Those are the Warbuton ones I bet? I don't like them, too thick and rubbery for me and you can't tell when they go off, a bit like their bread.

Crumpets are clever! They vacuum-pack themselves to show when they've gone off!

Supersoarer · 22/10/2025 01:05

Another good candidate for double-toasting, butter and marmite is the potato scone!

Ditto soda farls, but they are a single-toast item!

Teacakes are a half-toast and tea towel wafted under the smoke alarm 😁

SnowFrogJelly · 22/10/2025 01:06

Yum

Italiangreyhound · 22/10/2025 01:12

Yes, lovely, well done, great with honey or Marmite but at the same time!

GripGetter · 22/10/2025 01:14

TheFormidableMrsC · 21/10/2025 18:35

They need to be well done, toasted twice IMO. Buttered when very hot. I also like them with melted cheese and scrambled eggs.

M&S café Giant Welsh Rarebit Crumpets are the bomb.

Garamousalata · 22/10/2025 01:17

When M & S sold them in Paris, the French hated them. Apparently they were eating them without toasting them first.

I love crumpets but they have to be double toasted and crunchy, with plenty of butter.. and possibly another topping as well.

Agreed. Double toasted till golden and for this you need a brand like M and S which has a firmer surface that goes golden rather than a fluffy surface that burns.

Then sufficient butter to ooze down into the holes. Hot cup of tea, and on the last crumpet maybe a bit of strawberry jam.

For me cheese is for English muffins.

My first reaction to this was to howl with laughter, but on reflection some English people barely toast them.

They have to be good and hot and toasted.

BankfieldForever · 22/10/2025 01:29

Gorgeous. Marmite and melted cheese. See also Pikelets (I’m from Yorkshire).

Rubbery - but this might be a childhood thing. I used to hate asparagus until I left home and had it cooked properly for me.

So I may need to test out this double toasting method as previous attempts to enjoy they just feel like I am eating a natural sponge...

Yes sufficient toasting (and sufficient butter) deal with the rubbery issue.

Calliopespa · 22/10/2025 01:32

Raahh · 21/10/2025 19:47

I've only ever seen round pikelets- but they always seem more pancake- like.

Yes, like small, cold pancakes.

EBearhug · 22/10/2025 01:40

Crumoets are not just for toasting. May I suggest taking an uncooked crumpet, buttering liberally on top and bottom then doing both sides on a hot griddle/frying pan.

Calliopespa · 22/10/2025 01:40

One of the greatest comfort foods ever. I love a rainy, windy autumn afternoon when I am battling the elements and know I have hot, buttery crumpets to go home to.

M and S used to have a photo of a crumpet close up with butter melting into its golden surface. It gave me a vague idea of the levels of excitement men get viewing porn.

Love this, especially the porn reference. 😂

Lilacspring · 22/10/2025 07:56

I only like them microwaved for 30 seconds, I don't like them crunchy,I only buy them if they are on the yellow sticker shelf

Myblueclematis · 22/10/2025 08:13

I had to stop buying them as I was eating far too many.

I occasionally buy a pack now as a treat. I love them with thick butter and marmite eaten for breakfast but if it's much later in the day and I fancy something sweeter, I have home made jam on them, again with loads of butter.

A crumpet isn't worth eating if it doesn't have a thick layer of butter to melt in. Gorgeous!
