Crumpets

Love, hate, or indifferent?

My sister really loves them but I don't.
She tries to convert me every time but I remain unmoved.
Am I missing something? 😄

Well toasted with loads of butter and the solid Saint Agur cheese (not the spreadable). YUM!!!

ThisCanFuckOffToo · 21/10/2025 20:21

YY to toasted twice with just salty butter, crunchy peanut butter or cheesy triangle and marmite! Droooooool!

Arlanymor · 21/10/2025 20:21

Rubbery - but this might be a childhood thing. I used to hate asparagus until I left home and had it cooked properly for me.

So I may need to test out this double toasting method as previous attempts to enjoy they just feel like I am eating a natural sponge...

Agree and nodding sagely at the double toasted extra crispy brigade here.

I may lose you all now as I say wodges of salted butter with any of the following added: Marmite, Bovril, Golden Syrup, Honey, Chocolate Spread, Jam or Marmite and cheese.

I may have had to eat these as a poor student too many times and pushed the limits with fish in tomato sauce on it once. It wasn't the best idea ever but I have eaten worse.

I may have had sardines on tomato sauce on (very crispy)crumpets, once or twice as a student Grin .

It's actually quite nice. and cheap

bumbaloo · 21/10/2025 20:23

I think they are a weird texture. Almost synthetic.

You've got to beat that out of them by toasting them for a really good amount of time. Then all the weirdness disappears.

I thought I was the only one! I haven't had it since mind, so it may be better as a memory...

A carb is a carb, but crumpets are possibly the Queen of carbs. Really do seem to go with a wide variety of things.

Luckyingame · 21/10/2025 20:24

Indifferent.
However, they sometimes smell really bad when toasted.
😐

Those are the Warbuton ones I bet? I don't like them, too thick and rubbery for me and you can't tell when they go off, a bit like their bread.

Yes, the food of gods 100%. DH always calls them pikelets but aren't they square and not round like crumpets?

Many arguments in our house about pikelets. They are round and flat and not as nice as a crunchy crumpet. DP insists on calling crumpets pikelets. He is a philistine.

MouseCheese87 · 21/10/2025 20:27

Enjoy them when I eat one but I go ages without thinking of them so I'm mainly indifferent.

GellerYeller · 21/10/2025 20:28

Agreeing with PP- my grandma called crumpets pikelets. I think it’s a northern thing. I don’t know what the actual difference is between the two!

AuntieSoap · 21/10/2025 20:31

What’s all this ‘toasted twice’ business? I’ve never heard of it! Why don’t you just toast them once, but for longer?

Pikelets are (iirc) thinner and therefore inferior. I remember having them when visiting family in Yorkshire, but have never seen them anywhere else.

I’m not a fan of the Warburtons ones, Tesco cheapies and better IMO.

Agree that they need to be toasted to almost burnt, loads of butter, marmite and top with grated extra mature cheddar.

DiscoBeat · 21/10/2025 20:43

Toasted twice, with marmite and a slice of mature cheddar

I’m a twice toaster, it just seems to give a better texture.

How long do you leave it between toastings?

thismummyslife · 21/10/2025 20:47

Toast them twice, so they are crunchy on the bottom and the butter needs to be enough so that it seeps through and forms little pools on your plate, then they are heavenly! Once had someone make me one that had glimpses the toaster and had a slither of butter on and it was vile!

sexnotgenders · 21/10/2025 20:48

Nope, you’ve all lost me. What do you mean by twice toasted? Do you just toast for a long time, or are you toasting, waiting to get cool, and then re-toasting? I love a crumpet and do a long single toast, but I feel like I’ve stumbled upon some dark arts I know nothing about. Please someone enlighten me!

Mulledjuice · 21/10/2025 20:54

TheFormidableMrsC · 21/10/2025 18:35

They need to be well done, toasted twice IMO. Buttered when very hot. I also like them with melted cheese and scrambled eggs.

Yes to all of this!!

GinToBegin · 21/10/2025 20:54

AuntieSoap · 21/10/2025 20:46

Not long at all, I just give them a minute, then flip them in the toaster (I think they’re better under the grill, but the toaster is so handy) and toast until the bottom is crispy.

Once they’re done, I like to leave them in a toast rack to cool a little, so some of the butter melts into the crumpet, but there’s still some unmelted butter on top.

Fgfgfg · 21/10/2025 21:00

@sexnotgenders Toasted twice - I toast mine under the grill. You have to re-toast them so the bottom doesn't go soft again when you're toasting the top. It's most important that the bottom doesn't go soft. You need to dry out the crumpets without burning them and toasting twice does that.

Thank god! I thought I was the only one!
Maybe I don’t need to double toast because my toaster goes up to 11.

Ahhhh, so it’s a grilling method? That makes sense to me now, thank you. I use a toaster, and just do a long toast (I am in full agreement that you want a crispy bottom!), so that would in theory negate the need to twice toast. Although, I’m going to give it a go, with a slight pause of a minute during toasting, and see what happens. I would hate to be on my death bed and discover there was a nicer way to eat buttered crumpets!
