My best holidays were Borneo and Croatia. My worst was Center parcs in France - it was okay if you like that kind of thing but I learnt that it’s not for me.

Best - Maldives, Iceland, Seville
Worst - Dublin, Tunisia

Best holiday was Ireland. I had never been there before and TBH wasn’t expecting anything other than rain.

I have never enjoyed myself so much on any holiday. Yes, the heavens fucking opened for the entire time, but it didn't matter. The pubs were nothing like I expected, completely different atmosphere to here. It's hard to explain, they just all felt so cosy, and once the music started ! !

I now understand why they're so famous. And why people make such a big deal about them.

The Killarney National Park is breathtaking. And the people were so friendly, astonishingly friendly.

Not to mention the best petrol stations on the planet. They have bakeries and fresh deli counters and kitchens and proper coffee machines, in a petrol station! !nd I don't mean a motorway services. I mean just bog standard petrol stations, why we don't have that over here I don't know.

The worst has to be Mauritius. The people were lovely, but the Island itself isn't what it looks like on the adverts. There are some stunning places, and I'll give it to them, the beaches are spectacular. But most of the resorts are in the middle of nowhere and have nothing around them. You're basically trapped there. After a few days, I just got bored.

But I wasn't prepared for the way the majority of the island looked. It's not a very attractive place. There doesn't appear to be any planning laws and people just build whatever they want. The houses are mostly just ugly, grey eyesores. They don't plaster or paint them, just leave bare concrete blocks. It looks like a mess, and there is rubbish everywhere. It's not a clean place.

Malta always comes up on these threads as awful and I've never understood why. I'm there now for the second time and enjoying it again. Still going to run out of time to see all the ancient sites we wanted to and visit all the museums. Valletta is lovely to wander round especially in the evenings. It's a lovely place.

Interesting.

My late partner and I kept intending to go to Malta and were a bit put off by their alleged attitude to shooting songbirds and rabbits, so we never made it. Is that why Mumsnetters don't like it?

(Worst holidays: Kisumu and Nairobi, more mainstream: Marrakech.)

stravagante · 22/10/2025 16:00

Best- skiing in chamonix
Worst - definitely Iceland. We had appalling luck with weather and it was just wretched.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/10/2025 16:02

@CrystalSingerFan we went to Malta on a work trip thing and combined with Gozo ( the kempinski). Whilst Malta is general isn’t exactly scenic, Valletta is one of my favourite European city’s - to me it was like a really good Italian city at half the price - had some terrific and reasonable meals too - and the Valletta/Gozo combo turned out to be a much better holiday than I had expected -

I don't understand the hate for Malta at all?! Me and DH absolutely loved it!

I think (might be wrong) but because it's such a small island, if you stay in one of the "tourist" resorts (St Julians, Sliema, Mellieha) then you're probably going to get a really bad first impression of it.

You need to get out and see "real" Malta and the stunning history. Gozo, Mdina, Rabat, Marsaxloxx, Marsaskala are all fantastic places to stay if you love culture, history and tradition.

MissAmbrosia · 22/10/2025 16:24

Best - 3 week road trip to Tuscany and back via Bavaria, Valpolicella, Grindelwald and Lake Como. But I could list loads more...

Worst - Cognac, when dd broke her wrist within an hour of arriving and then it rained all week. The place would have been perfectly nice otherwise though I think.
