Is anyone else dreading the clocks going back?

It's finally here. Dark evenings, and within a week or two, dark mornings too. I'll be leaving for work and heading home in the dark. Thankfully my job has some big windows and I have access to outside space if needs be, but it'll still be a pretty miserable six months. I'm trying to get ahead of it by getting my supplements sorted out and bought, but even then I don't know how well it'll work. Just the worst time of year all around

I prefer it, my natural body rhythm suits GMT. I always feel exhausted during BST.

I don’t love the dark but I do feel more rested.

What helps me is a Lumie alarm clock, that makes me feel less weird.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 21/10/2025 10:54

I’m already driving to work in pitch black and driving home in pitch black. It is depressing though.

Wexone · 21/10/2025 11:01

I don't mind it - prefer it it then the summer time, loosing one hour has an impact on me, i notice. I wish if changing we keep winter time. We need the sun in the morning what ever little there is to heat up the roads etc. Not too sure if anyone notices it, but a lot of road accidents happen in September early in morning , this is due to poor visibility roads still cold allow cars to slide aswell as increase traffic etc. Come Nov and Dec when even icier the brighter mornings are a blessing. Its only 8 weeks till shortest day of the year , then you start to see a difference in the eves especially come Jan. the we will be soon moving clocks forward, happens in every country around the world if it aint broke dont fix it

Esssa · 21/10/2025 11:13

I'm another that would prefer BST all year round. It's still going to be light and dark for the same amount of time regardless though. It's just the changing over part that annoys me.

Dark by no later than 8 would be perfect for me. Even if we did ditch BST it would still be light past 9 for some of the year.

Yes, I think in order to have proper darkness by 8.00pm, in the south of England we would need to be on GMT minus two hours, which would mean that it would start to get light again shortly after 2.00am.

Hilly87 · 21/10/2025 11:31

I am. I despise this time of year and the clocks going back always has a knock on effect on my mental health despite being on ADs.

Belladog1 · 21/10/2025 11:31

Doesn't bother me really. The only thing is having to walk the dogs in the dark, or at least rush to take them out early before it gets dark.

But I love cosy nights in with the lamps on and the candles lit, snuggling under a blanket.

I am lucky though. I work full time, but I get to go home every day at 2pm, so I do get a short while to get my jobs done before the dark sets in.

spoonbillstretford · 21/10/2025 11:32

No, it's lighter in the mornings for a little while, and I sleep better in winter than in summer. I go open water swimming early on Sunday mornings and this week I get a lie in!

Zempy · 21/10/2025 11:41

I would prefer to stay on one time all year long.

The dark evenings don’t bother me at all, but the dark mornings are horrible.

MidlandsGal1 · 21/10/2025 11:55

I’m so excited for it!
I start work early enough that it doesn’t make a difference to me in the mornings and I enjoy heading in when it’s pitch black but it’ll be getting dark at 16:40 and within 5 days it’ll be at 16:30.

This time next month the sun won’t come up until almost 8 anyway so it doesn’t make a huge difference.

I love this time of year, with my working hours I don’t see daylight for almost a week at times, it makes me feel like winter is really here even though we’re still over a month away.

Tis the Season to get cosy.

No point hating something that happens every year, it shows a glass half empty mindset. Try and find the positives or you’ll be wishing time away. Find things that help.
Eg long summer evenings go on forever so I make sure I’ve got good blackout curtains to block it out.

It’s hard to find the positives when you have a mental health issue that means winter is almost unbearable

I love the dark cold nights my fave time of year all snuggly with my candles - lush!!

For such a short post there are so many words I dislike here - dark/cold/snuggly/lush.

I hate the clocks being messed about with. It’s like jet lag.

I firmly believe those that like dark evenings from 4 are those that have nothing to do but lounge around ‘snuggling’ on their sofa surrounded by candles, festering under a blanket. Sounds awful to me.

The reality is commuting in the dark, ferrying children to clubs and sport in the dark. No lovely evening dog walks or runs. No sitting in the garden.

Though I guess we can’t create more light. I just don’t get people who like it dark at 4pm. It makes the world so much smaller. Unless you like wandering around in the dark I guess.

Are you on medication, tried sad lights, tried doing inside style hobbies to distract yourself etc.

I don't find it makes my world smaller. I don't particularly enjoy it being dark at 4 but nor do I dislike it. It's just what it is.

I do actively prefer driving in the dark to driving at any time when I'll be squinting into the setting sun so the said mention of ferrying children about is actually easier in the winter.

And I prefer commuting in the dark. It's just a little bit more exciting being out of the house when it's still dark and seeing the sun come up from the office.

Eyesopenwideawake · 21/10/2025 13:27

I like it – I feed the horses as soon as it's light enough which means at the moment it's almost 8am...and they are not amused. Back to 7am on Sunday morning.

Got the lights. My GP won’t prescribe as during the spring/summer I am fine. I try to get out as much as I can but it’s just horrid.

It doesn’t bother me. I’m one of those that enjoys the coziness of winter. As soon as Christmas is over, the days will start getting longer.

PeonyPatch · 21/10/2025 13:34

DREADING IT HUN

BreatheAndFocus · 21/10/2025 13:37

On the contrary, I’m looking forward to it 😊 It’s been getting darker and darker in the mornings, and the clock change will help that enormously - I can’t wait! Yes, it’s strange at first when it gets dark earlier but that’s not as bad as the pitch black mornings, and the weather is crap anyway so people aren’t out as much doing leisure activities at that time of day.

Absolutely agree.

And I enjoy a bit of cosy/PJ/blanket/candle time. Absolutely. But that's what 10pm is for.

4pm - or 6pm - that's the time I want to take the dc for a trip to the skatepark after school or take the dog along the coast path on a lovely evening walk. OR just sit in the garden with a wine spritzer or be able to do a supermarket shop in the evening without picking my way over a dark car park.

You can enjoy the dark cosy times all year round, at actual night - but I too find it hard to understand why some people want their day time to be dark too.

If I could, i'd pause at the longest day all year. Can't wait for March already.

MadisonMarieParksValetta · 21/10/2025 13:47

But the mornings will be lighter will they not?

FullOfMomsense · 21/10/2025 14:02

My only advice is to get some fresh air when it is bright. If you can go outside during your lunchbreak, do it every day. It can be miserable, I enjoy the cosiness but the 6am school runs and living on a farm does make things difficult

isthismylifenow · 21/10/2025 14:17

As a Southern Hemisphere dweller this is not something we ever have to think about.

BUT

My dc are now travelling as it will be their first time experiencing this. I am going to have to give them a heads up, as otherwise I am going to get a WTF message on Sunday 😀

Thanks to the OP for bringing this up as I would not have known when it was either.

Netcurtainnelly · 21/10/2025 18:25

Hate it.
Bring back Summer.
