Is anyone else dreading the clocks going back?

It's finally here. Dark evenings, and within a week or two, dark mornings too. I'll be leaving for work and heading home in the dark. Thankfully my job has some big windows and I have access to outside space if needs be, but it'll still be a pretty miserable six months. I'm trying to get ahead of it by getting my supplements sorted out and bought, but even then I don't know how well it'll work. Just the worst time of year all around

I'd be fine with it! If it's light at 4am it may as well be light at 3am for all the use it is to anyone.

And we wouldn't have this pointless faff twice a year

Well it being light in the evenings actually benefits people?

I don’t mind it, the dogs are annoying though.

Yes, I know other people like it. I don't and would personally prefer not to bother with BST. But as I have no influence over policy in this area you don't have to worry.

I'm just answering your OP with my opinion. Sucks for me thst mine is unpopular.

ThePoshUns · 20/10/2025 22:17

I dread it. I hate winter. It’s a slog to get through it.

tigger1001 · 20/10/2025 22:18

I'm glad of the slightly lighter mornings for a couple of weeks after the clocks changes. The clocks changing doesn't bother me though.

Not really it would still be dark by 5. At least this way the school walk is in daylight, which is definitely safer. I know it’s not always possible for everyone but at the slightest hint of a dry day I try and get out for a short lunchtime walk.

It would be dark until gone 10 in the morning by December!

Err, no, that's what would happen in December if the clocks didn't revert to GMT in October. We're currently on GMT+1

Whereas it being pitch dark at 9.30 am is A-OK, is it? Confused

But it’s not, that’s the whole point of the changes

Well yes, so why are you complaining about the clocks going back?

ByTwinklyDreamer · 20/10/2025 22:31

I like it, curtains drawn, candles on, Netflix on, cosy time.

Because I get seasonal depression and the dark evenings are a huge contributor to that :)

No; love it. Sorry!

PuppyMonkey · 20/10/2025 22:33

it'll still be a pretty miserable six months.

It’s not really six full months of dark nights though. It’s basically November, December, January and February then by March it’s getting a lot lighter in the evening and the clocks go forward on the third Sunday.

Cheer up, it’ll not always be dark at six o’clock - as they used to say where I grew up. Smile

I notice the change after the shortest day.

Fair enough. I find the dark in the mornings much worse than the evenings

QBTheRoundestOfBees · 20/10/2025 22:37

I bought a daylight lamp this morning and it should arrive in the next couple of days. I have one in my office but I need another one. I suffer from SAD and this year seems already worse. I don’t seem to have any motivation to do anything much at all and I have a lot I need to do.
I thought the clocks went back in two weeks not this weekend though 😱

We’d have the same amount of sunshine… just the sun would come up at 3am and nobody would enjoy it

And everybody would be on MN complaining bitterly that their kids were waking up at three in the morning because it was broad daylight outside.😂

SparkFinder · 20/10/2025 22:38

I love it. I think GMT is aligned with our natural circadian rhythm. I always feel wrong when the clocks go forward. I love that there is a time for everything. We had the heat and the sun and the long days. Now it's a different vibe. I love halloween, the family birthdays and the Christmas run up of the next few months.

Yes, it's really only a short period where the days are very short - there's a noticeable improvement even by the end of Jan/early Feb.

Monkeytennis97 · 20/10/2025 22:43

I’m looking forward to January when the days get slightly longer day by day… once we’ve hit 21st December I start to feel a bit better as we’ve turned the corner on the darkness.

Clingfilm · 20/10/2025 22:51

Bloody depressing. Finishing work at 5 and it being dark, so you can't really do any outside jobs, or sit in the garden or go for a cycle or a run or walk in my usual places ( not comfortable roaming the park in the dark, thanks, men, but that's another thread...).

FlowersFawb · 20/10/2025 22:53

I love the dark cold nights my fave time of year all snuggly with my candles - lush!!

TheDenimPoet · 20/10/2025 22:56

If it makes you feel any better, it's not 6 months before the clocks go forward again it's only 5. So we have 5 months of darker days and then 7 months where they're a little lighter.

I really struggle at this time of year. I WFH and sometimes find myself not leaving the house for days because I don't want to go out walking in the cold/rain, sometimes it feels like it doesn't even get completely light, I woke up on Sunday at 10am and the light felt like 5am. It was horrible.

I'm a completely different person at this time of year than I am in the summer.

I'm on ADs, which helps, but currently going through a dosage tweak so getting side effects from that.

But yeah. Although I'm feeling it already, I am absolutely dreading the clocks going back. Darkness at 4pm isn't for me. Nuh uh.
