Is anyone else dreading the clocks going back?

It's finally here. Dark evenings, and within a week or two, dark mornings too. I'll be leaving for work and heading home in the dark. Thankfully my job has some big windows and I have access to outside space if needs be, but it'll still be a pretty miserable six months. I'm trying to get ahead of it by getting my supplements sorted out and bought, but even then I don't know how well it'll work. Just the worst time of year all around

I don't love it but embrace it as much as I can, that's is I like making the house all cosy as opposed to light and airy during the summer months, I have food on the hob ready gor when we get home.

I like walking at night but go out with my friends and I have a fabulous head torch that lights the woods up.

I rarely take my annual leave in the summer but save it for the winter months when I go off some where warm several times. I find that helps a lot.

RunningJo · 20/10/2025 23:10

Love autumn, but not a fan of dark nights. I tried a ‘sad’ light thing but didn’t help much, as the darker nights definitely affect my mood
I also hate walking the dog in the dark.

If it makes you feel any better, it's not 6 months before the clocks go forward again it's only 5. So we have 5 months of darker days and then 7 months where they're a little lighter.

I really struggle at this time of year. I WFH and sometimes find myself not leaving the house for days because I don't want to go out walking in the cold/rain, sometimes it feels like it doesn't even get completely light, I woke up on Sunday at 10am and the light felt like 5am. It was horrible.

I'm a completely different person at this time of year than I am in the summer.

I'm on ADs, which helps, but currently going through a dosage tweak so getting side effects from that.

But yeah. Although I'm feeling it already, I am absolutely dreading the clocks going back. Darkness at 4pm isn't for me. Nuh uh.

It's only dark at 3.50-4pm (in southern England) for a couple of weeks around the end of November and beginning of December - by about the 14th, sunset's going to get later again.

Seeing as it means that everybody else who lives further north gets to have less pitch black during the normal working day as a result, I'm accepting of a few days of travelling to and from work in Stygian gloom and trips where you can see windows and homes lit up for Christmas, Not exactly a fan of waiting for a bus in freezing rain, but it's for such a short time and the difference that hour makes to others is worth it.

I really enjoy the first bit of sunshine on my face in January, though.

Firebird83 · 21/10/2025 00:09

My SAD really kicks in property after the clocks change. November is the worst month for it.

UnstoppableSia · 21/10/2025 00:28

I hate the clocks going back as it interferes with my sleep & mood.
Whereas the clocks going forward doesn't affect me at.
I operate best on BST & so do my DC.

Like many pps I look forward to December 21st as after that the nights get shorter & the days longer
I really wish we could have BST all year round.

CinnamonCrunch33 · 21/10/2025 09:02

I’ve ordered and stocked up on iron tablets, b vitamins, vitamin d and magnesium and I’m hoping they mitigate some of it

The longer nights, dark days, rubbish weather are due to the season, not to the clocks going back. Even if we didn't change the time those would still happen. You're dreading winter, not the clocks 😆

CherryPinkAppleBlossomWhite · 21/10/2025 09:31

No. I love it! I can't wait for frosty morning and hopefully snow!

SeaAndStars · 21/10/2025 09:38

I love it too. Cosy and snug times at home - fire lit, candles, blankets. All the glitter of Halloween, Guy Fawkes Night and Christmas then hunkering down to a couple of months of stews, puddings and long frosty weekend walks. I like quiet, bleak empty landscapes and love the winter months when nobody is there.

ELO10538 · 21/10/2025 09:44

No, not in the slightest. Happens every year.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/10/2025 09:48

Normandy144 · 20/10/2025 21:55

I don't like it either but I try to look at it positively because actually, yes between October and December each day is shorter and shorter, but that has been creeping upon us since the end of June. So the way I look at it is that by Christmas the final stretch is over and from January onwards days get longer and longer, bit by bit. So I try to focus on the fact it's just these 2 months really and not 6 months of doom.

Shortest day is 21st December so even before Christmas the days are lengthening. By the end of Jan there’s a really noticeable difference - became particularly obvious to me when I used to leave work at 5. Big difference in one month.

Bellabomb · 21/10/2025 09:51

DappledThings · 20/10/2025 21:57

What do you mean? We are on GMT in December so nothing would change there. We just wouldn't have really long days in the summer. It's BST I wouldn't bother with.

The daylight hours would, of course, be exactly the same. But if we remained on GMT in the summer, the sun would be out at 3.30am and it would be getting dark by 8.00pm. I think it's better to take advantage of the light in the evenings, rather than have more of it in the very early morning.

I would prefer BST during the winter months and maybe even double BST in the summer.

Dark by no later than 8 would be perfect for me. Even if we did ditch BST it would still be light past 9 for some of the year.

janamo · 21/10/2025 09:58

I doubt many like it. But maybe some do and get into their burrow, it's often a nice feeling to be at home and not be under pressure to go out much like in Summer.

I don't like it much, but what can I do? I think I just accept it as part of the seasons and know that once 21December comes it's upwards all the way again. And I am not the only one having to live with dark nights either. That kind of helps.

LinedOverLatte · 21/10/2025 10:04

Yes, been dreading it since September. It’s not just the dark morning and evenings, but the winter “white sky” on the days when there’s not even a tiny patch of blue. It’s all so gloomy. Every year I try and change my mindset and embrace the cosy-vibes but it is a struggle.

I do love a chunky jumper and thick tights though, so every cloud and all that!

The clocks go back for five months and not six. British Summer Time last for seven months.

thisishowloween · 21/10/2025 10:13

No. I absolutely love this time of year.

Tdcp · 21/10/2025 10:22

I used to find it a bit much when I worked in a store that didn't have windows, I'd arrive in the dark, work under harsh lights all day then go home in the dark for 5 or 6 days a week. It's not SO bad now I work in an office with windows but it can be a bit depressing. I don't entirely mind the early dark when I'm at home as I like closing the curtains and putting on some nice lights and being cosy... dp has had SAD in the past and he can find it very difficult.

I definitely think I have SAD, but I don’t know if It’s worth seeing a doctor about

Dp hasn't seen a doctor, he won't for anything but it's clearly what he suffers with. I'm not sure what good a diagnosis would do though. I've heard very good things about those lamps though he's yet to try one.

I think I’m going to push through with the vitamins for a while (particularly iron and b complex) and see if they help at all

I'm the opposite, I love having a defined day and night.

The endless days of Summer make me feel ill and dizzy.

Magnesium is also a very good mineral to take :)

Yes I have some coming! I really struggle to sleep when it gets round to winter because the darkness feels never ending but I’m hopeful it’ll help!
