Aiming to connect with people in real life and WhatsApp/email. Anyone else done this and how did you find it?

I really want to do this but haven’t done so yet. I bet it’s freeing!

FlorenceAgainstTheMachine · 19/10/2025 20:06

I did it about two years ago. I’m still on Instagram and BlueSky as I’m in a public facing role, but hoping to scale all of that back also over 2026. My mental health is a lot better now I’m not subjected to algorithms and other people’s bullshit. It’s delightful.

UnTrucDOeuf · 19/10/2025 20:06

I just hate the scrolling syndrome, so much else I could be doing.
Including just doing nothing!

by the way I understand the blatant irony of coming on here to share!

I did this four years ago and I haven’t looked back! Honestly it’ll be one of the best decisions you’ve ever made! Here’s to a happier you

I really dislike D
FB. I had a brief interest in it but deleted it 11 years ago. It's all fake and I have no interest whatsoever.

UnTrucDOeuf · 19/10/2025 20:09

Yes, love Bluesky, it’s the antidote to Twitter. Lots of sane journalists on there,
almost no toxicity.
but don’t tell everyone

Good to know. I hope I’ll be the same.

I hardly go on Facebook tbh, and when I do it's useful. Mumsnet is far more addictive than social media and can be very toxic.

True. I was on here in the very early days, it was extremely funny and supportive then

I deactivated and delete the app for a year and I did not miss it. I activated it after my wee MIL died and ended up doom scrolling again! I deactivated and deleted the app again last week, it's toxic and full of adverts. I miss a couple of groups though, the friendly jumping spider one! So cute. It's the best thing you will do. Interested in Bluesky I've not heard of that. X

KissMyArt · 19/10/2025 20:22

I quite like FB but only really use it to nose in the local groups now and then.

I do miss seeing my friends on my newsfeed though, no matter how I toggle the settings, it's just sponsored bloody ads and public pages/groups it asks me if I want to join.

Bluesky has no ads for a start!

Came off all social media just before Xmas 2024. It’s been AMAZING for me and my MH. I don’t care about what others are doing and if I’m interested I contact them!

I still have FB, insta etc just in case I need to contact someone or scroll on market place for something but I have a limit on my phone of 5 minutes. I think I must have been on it a total of 15 mins in the last 10 months.

Do it, you won’t regret it! Honestly though the first week was like going through a detox.

Very happy for you, I tried time limits but kept overriding them.
I enjoy audiobooks so hoping to ‘read’ more going forward

Deleted my FB account almost 7 years ago. The level of toxic competitiveness with people I knew 30 years ago was too much. Felt like it was the only option. I felt relief, a sense of quiet and being alone but I reasoned that's because FB was filling a gap. Friends have kept in touch via WhatsApp, hasn't affected my social life, if anything in a positive way.

Sigmamood · 19/10/2025 21:16

I left Facebook 8 years ago and never looked back. It was so worth it to me as I kept comparing my life to others and getting depressed seeing an acquaintance who had 4 luxury holidays a year and lived in a gorgeous home wanting for nothing (or at least that was how it seemed on fb).
I was getting jealous and depressed looking st lifestyles and things I could never have.

heartsinvisiblefury · 19/10/2025 21:17

Been off it since Christmas. I couldn’t stand all the ads.

Toxic competitiveness sums it up nicely! I’ve only been on for about 4 yrs and was perfectly happy before so hoping I won’t miss it.

Absolutely agree. I deleted MN for 6 months last year. Not sure why I cracked, it's unhealthy.
FB I use for practical purposes - finding trades, researching travel/ holiday destinations. Never for social. I do have contacts on FB but mute everyone. So if I use it I don't see any posts from people I know, just search for a plumber or whatever.

reluctantbrit · 19/10/2025 21:25

I use it to 99% for groups linked to my hobby. Tried Discord for it but it doesn't really work, most groups stay on FB.

Bluesky - died a slow dead for me, Twitter is long gone and Thread is reading only, I hardly comment on anything.

Some will say they don't have a problem at all with it, guess it depends on who you're connected to. I bumped into someone from my old account last week. We had a good natter. She said she was trying not to look on Facebook 'because my life is so sh*tty'. Reassured her that's not the case at all, FB is often a fake reality. Would like to say it's one particular individual but it's not, it's the village we grew up in!

Good luck with the deletion - doing it only has benefits.

daydi · 19/10/2025 21:45

Amazing! Dp and I deleted all social media about 1 month ago. Much less time spent on phone and my anxiety has much improved. I don’t have much of a clue about what’s going on in the world however I find much more joy in my own life now

Wasssuuuuup · 19/10/2025 21:46

I keep it for local groups which are hilariously dramatic!
I have only family and close friends on so no issue. Not even whole family😂
