Are there a lot of fake listings on Facebook Market place?

I haven't used it before but having a look spotted some amazing bargains of good as new items selling for hundreds of pounds less than elsewhere. Fantastic I thought but looking at some of the sellers they seem to be selling a few high value items for a very low price and then when you look at their profile the items are listed here in Durham but they live in London.

Am I right to conclude that these are likely to be a total scam?

Yes! Assume everyone is a scammer unless proven otherwise.

@Sprig1 Thanks, part of me is still thinking, it could be a good deal but it's literally too good to be true and the profiles just aren't adding up.

Some are but I've found a lot of bargains on Facebook marketplace. You just have to always be more cautious than you might usually be.

Bargains to be had but also a lot of scams! If it seems too goods to be true it probably is.

Beds and mattresses seem to have loads of scams, no idea why.

But other furniture items (sofas etc) can often be real bargains (people tend to just want to get them out of the house quickly if they are getting a new one so will practically give the old one away).

Always check the profile long the person has been on Facebook and be very wary of fairly new profiles.

Loads of scams. Also if you list anything for sale you will get loads of replies from scammers - beware of messages which just refer to "the item".

Chinapattern · 19/10/2025 18:13

Ok thanks, I guess I will just buy "the item" new. Cannot be arsed with getting caught up with a bunch of scammers. I am sure anything genuine would look a lot more reasonable and not like dream deal of the century. Thanks for the tips!
