Do you get on with your in-laws?

Or if you had a fraught relationship with them initially, did things ever improve as time went by?

I've been married for 31 years.
The first 10 or so of those, my in-laws were not very nice people.
The next 10 years, we kind of kept a healthy distance.
I have noticed now that they are much older, they have mellowed in their ways and we rub along OK.

From my DH's perspective - he says (and I quote) he "won the in-laws lottery".

Hated my in laws . MIL was a real matriarch with no daughters . I was living alone abroad and extremely independent. She tried to impose her will on me and then would go no contact if you disagreed with her even over small things . FIL just did what he was told . We eventually returned to my home country where my family greeted my DH with nothing but love and support and were even financially generous to our family. I miss my parents so much even after nearly 20 years. MIL has passed and FIL is a quiet pleasant old man now .

Thanks for sharing all your stories.
In DS1's situation, we are likely to become the default in-laws/family/grandparents as his fiancée's family are overseas so I will definitely bear in mind your experience @Soonenough!

I love mine very much. I did have to sort some boundary issues with MIL about 10 years ago, but other than that, we've always got on. DH is very fond of my parents too.
