We are coming to Oxford next week for a birthday trip and I’ve yet to book. Last time we went to Victors and we’ve done the Ivy. Where else is a good option? Many thanks

Weekday or weekend? For a Sunday roast, The Chester Arms is amazing, but you can’t book so you’ll need to queue. The Magdalen Arms is another great option. If you’d prefer something non-British, Bhoomi Kitchen in Headington is excellent. People rave about Arbequina, but I don’t quite get the hype, maybe because I don’t eat meat.

Or Pierre Victoire. Oh, and The Porterhouse is great if you like steak.

Wellyoudidaskaboutit · 16/10/2025 12:43

First Table has just launched in Oxford if you wanted to save some £££

Cherwell Boat House - but it’s not central. Ashmolean Museum - roof top dining. Arbequina in Cowley Road.

Does it need to be child-friendly?

I like Quod in the Old Bank Hotel on the High, and No 1 Ship Street.

Craftylemonduck · 16/10/2025 15:13

No 1 Ship Street is lovely!

MaturingCheeseball · 16/10/2025 15:23

Definitely Quod !

You can linger as well - not one of those places where you’re out in 20 minutes.

EleanorSidgwick · 16/10/2025 15:55

Quod is great

Pompette in Summertown is lovely.

Pierre Victoire, another vote. Little Clarendon street. Fish is superb.

whiteroseredrose · 16/10/2025 20:06

Gees on Banbury Road. It has a lovely glass conservatory with lots of plants.

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 16/10/2025 20:24

Oh yes, Gee’s and The Old Parsonage are both lovely.

Most of my family are veggie and we all absolutely love Arbequina. Heaps of options without going anywhere near meat.

You have to be non veggie though, otherwise a bad choice.

The Old Parsonage is excellent but Gee’s has gone to slightly meh all day dining. Not sure it’s as good as it was.

AutismMum2017 · 17/10/2025 06:48

Another vote for Gee’s!

Joe’s Bar & Grill, Summertown
Giggling Squid in Jericho is nice if you like Thai food.

Oh, that’s really sad! It was such a lovely place when I went 😢

ElizabethVonArnim · 17/10/2025 06:59

I love Browns. Nostalgia, probably, but I still love it. Went recently for an early dinner and was still nice.

Uptownfunkywat · 17/10/2025 09:19

Thank you for all the recommendations x

My vote goes to https://chesterarmsoxford.co.uk/

get there early, completely worth the short wait. Enjoy.

I suppose it’s a matter of taste! The old menu was very meat heavy so we prefer the new menu with more vegetarian options.
