What's your favourite?

I love the word mardy.
I love shut your cake hole.

What can I add to broaden my repertoire?

ELO10538 · 14/10/2025 10:34

In the Southern USA "Aw, bless your heart" means something like "You are so stupid I can't be bothered to talk to you." (or so my S-in-L tells me).

Ormally · 14/10/2025 10:43

Barm cake

PegDope · 14/10/2025 10:48

Probably the most iconic insult for a Dubliner (image will eventually be revealed)

I love it that in Glasgow “cunt” is a term of endearment whilst “pal” is a genuine threat!

CharliesAngles · 14/10/2025 10:51

@weegiemum I have a special fondness for the Scottish ones!

A few Irish ones that are generally used towards women - weapon and wagon. Both great.

Also, the ULTIMATE Irish insult...

A few sheep short in the top paddock.

Oh I married a Glaswegian in my 20s and moved to Glasgow ( originally North of England).
My first job shortly after moving there involved taking statements from people. It was like a foreign language to me and i really struggled..
It took me years to get used to the Glasgow patter but I absolutely love it.
The insult my then H used to use and which had to be explained to me the first time I heard it was him calling another guy a Sweetie wife.

RaraRachael · 14/10/2025 11:49

I'm in NE Scotland and had dealings with a policeman in Glasgow. He spoke at 100mph in a very strong Glaswegian accent and I struggled to understand him.

One of my favourite insults was if someone was the equivalent of mutton dressed as lamb. My mother's friend would say, "She's nae a scone o the day's baking"

My daughter is a nurse with colleagues from all over the world. They love her Doric comments.

Hoppinggreen · 14/10/2025 11:50

Absolutely

AffIt · 14/10/2025 13:04

Glaswegian here.

I'm particularly fond of 'pie' and 'rocket'. I know they seem pretty mild written down, but trust me, it's all in the emphasis. 😉

CharliesAngles · 14/10/2025 13:11

@AffIt
@Fitzcarraldo353

How would these be used?

My Boltonian mum used to say 'you big daft apeth'!

MrsMoastyToasty · 14/10/2025 13:17

Munter, as in ugly. Eg She's a munter.

Shithead- derogatory term for a Bristol City supporter used by Gasheads (Bristol Rovers supporters).

FancyFlugelhorn · 14/10/2025 13:24

Dinlo - stupid person
Squinny/squin - someone who whines a lot
(Portsmouth)

TheTecknician · 14/10/2025 13:38

'Hadaway n shite'. I'm not from the northeast of England and I have no idea what the phrase means, except that it's not polite.
