Dying in from uk? Have you looked at fight times, you could have a very limited time there.

It's not much time! and I take it you haven't been before. I would get the Alilaguna from the airport and check if the route covers the Grand Canal, and book a hotel not too far from Piazza San Marco.

My highlights for such a short time would be:
Scuola di San Giorgio for the lovely Carpaccios
Basilica di San Marco
Caffe Florian for the evening, after dinner
Wandering from the Piazza up to the Rialto
Vaporetto trip on the Grand Canal if not already covered by the Alilaguna
Couple of churches if you can fit them in - Santa Maria Formosa for the Palma Vecchio St Barbara, or the Frari for the Titians. Martyrdom of St Lawrence up in the Gesuiti off Fondamente Nove is IMO the best painting in Venice, but it's a detour for a gory subject.

Cash if you want to go in any churches or buy anything on the Rialto stalls - they may take cards these days though

One night from where? Verona, OK. The UK? Not enough time.

Assuming you're flying in/out of Marco Polo Airport, I'd take the coach to Piazzale Roma in Venice and choose a hotel within walking distance from there.

Read up about it online and see what interests you. Learn about ticket prices for a vaporetto and where to get them. You'll do lots of walking, so either get a map or use your phone - and take a few detours off the main route between St Mark's Square and Piazzale Roma because it's like being on the M1 during rush hour. Literally take some time to wander down side alleys and over little bridges - that's part of the magic of Venice!

And check out some web cams - this one is my favourite:

And explore Venice on Google StreetView. Don't know if this link will work but I randomly dropped in and landed on a boat sailing through a small canal!
