Hotels near A1

In June next year we are going to be driving down the A1 from Harrogate to Thetford Forest. Did it a couple of years ago and it was quite a long drive so we have decided to break it up and stay over somewhere on the way down. Preferably close-ish to the A1

We are looking for a country house type hotel about half way down - hopefully close to somewhere to visit too - a pretty village, NT property etc

Does anyone have any suggestions

If anyone recommends The Fox near South Witham don’t do it - it used to be a swingers joint as well as a pub/hotel! Had its own website too, so this isn’t just rumours. No idea if it still is lol.

Stamford is lovely - it’s right on the A1 and is just over an hour from Thetford. I haven’t used any hotels there, so can’t recommend any.

I think there is a nice looking hotel near Wansford too - about 10 mins further south than Stamford. I can’t remember what it’s called but it looked lovely!

I forgot to mention, if you pick Stamford, you should visit Burleigh House!

Thanks for the tip! Won't be going there

The Haycock?
Never stayed there but used it for business meetings. Certainly seemed very pleasant.

The Haycock is very pleasant and a short drive from Rutland water. The finch's arms on the Hambleton peninsula is also v nice

Agree about Hambleton, but it’s about 15 mins away from the A1 in the wrong direction for you OP. That’s my neck of the woods - I live in Rutland ☺️ it’s a gorgeous area.

I haven’t stayed at The George in Stamford but I’ve been for afternoon tea and it was lovely - like something out of another century in a good way. It’s also a traditional coaching inn for people stopping off on the A1 and Stamford itself is just lovely.
