When do you give up line drying for the year?

How do you decide when to give up line drying for the year? I managed to dry about 90% of this weeks laundry but had to put the rest in the dryer to finish off. I had been hoping for a bit of sun but it never really came out. Looks even worse over the next few weeks so should probably give up but we have a small house and no space to dry stuff indoors without tripping over it. I would put everything in the dryer over winter but have quite a bit of stuff that says not to and obviously woollens etc.

I don't. If it's dry and windy or sunny out it goes. Can you do your washing according to the weather forecast? I finish mine off hanging in the airing cupboard.

murasaki · 12/10/2025 17:14

Today, as the bloody thing broke when DP tried to raise it. Grrr.

Myfridgeiscool · 12/10/2025 17:15

If the ground is dry the washing goes on the line. Mine goes out when there's snow on the ground! If the suns on it or it’s windy it’ll dry.

I don't. If it's breezy and dry and above freezing I hang washing out.

the weather right now is still good if you get it on the line early (down south anyway)

devildeepbluesea · 12/10/2025 17:17

It has to be really warm for it to go out. My box room is really sunny and a full load will dry in a day, as it’s just me and DD half the time so I’m never overwhelmed by washing.
I still love it when I can hang it out at 8am and it’s dry by 11 though.

persisted · 12/10/2025 17:17

I don’t. No tumble drier and I’d rather keep the damp out of the house if possible.
it goes on the line if it’s less than 50% chance of rain. Comes in after dinner and goes on the airer overnight to finish it off.

Timely question as this is the second day running I've put washing outside, and hours later it's still not dry because it's cloudy and still. The weather forecast for next week is the same. Either sun or wind will work but what about when you have neither? I might start looking at heated airers

I've had the same the last 2 days so I think I'm done with it I hate drying laundry indoors I have a heated airer that's pretty good from aldi it has a cover but I've got 4 dc so I either need a bigger one or a dryer.

I don’t, if the ground is dry the washing will dry, and I live in Scotland.
Even if it’s just for a short while to get the freshness.

DrCoconut · 12/10/2025 17:38

Nothing dries when it's not sunny so I've pretty much stopped now. It's based on the weather though so I may do the odd load if it's warm enough.

dizzydizzydizzy · 12/10/2025 17:39

Even in the middle of winter, the washing will dry outside to some extent. I only had my first tumble dryer 2 years ago.

notacooldad · 12/10/2025 17:40

I dont.
If its dry with a bit of breeze, washing goes out.

AtomicBlondeRose · 12/10/2025 17:44

I had two loads out yesterday all day in the sun and they didn’t properly dry so I’m not going to be putting full loads out from now on. The light things were fine but heavier things were hardly dry at all.

nilniosk · 12/10/2025 17:45

I read on here the ‘dry on the ground’ thing, tried it all last late autumn and the washing didn’t dry at all. I think it can be cold out but there needs to be either sun or a good breeze.

Still, cold (but dry) days did nothing.

Nourishinghandcream · 12/10/2025 17:46

No date. If it is a good (or reasonable) drying day then out it goes even if it needs a final finish in the tumble or on the drier.

It is like asking if you put the heating on at a specific date.
No. We wait until we actually need the heating on whether that be September or December.

Zippedydodah · 12/10/2025 17:51

If the patio slabs are dry then the washing goes up on the line. If necessary it finishes off on the clothes horse in the living room. Towels finish off if necessary in the tumble dryer.

Corse · 12/10/2025 17:51

I have a rack by our full length glass door and haven’t put stuff on the line for a few weeks. It was too much faff and not getting completely dry so having to put on the rack anyway.

Kitchenbattle · 12/10/2025 17:51

It doesn’t matter what time of year it is for me. I do my laundry on a Saturday (as I have free electricity and I’m not working) so the weather is what it is on the day. If it’s sunny or windy then I will hang them out. If it’s raining or I’m tired or need to get laundry done by a certain time then I use the dryer.

66babe · 12/10/2025 17:54

Mine will go out as long as I can , it won’t get completely dry but finishing off on a clothes horse for a few hours is better than 3 days of wet washing hanging around . I don’t have space for a tumble dryer .

Fispi · 12/10/2025 17:56

Before I had a tumble dryer it went out if no rain even if there was snow on the ground. Days of wet washing draped round the house through winter. I will still hang it out if there is a decent wind or some sun but very happy to have the option of finishing drying in front of the log burner or in the dryer if needed.

This ^^
I will always try and get my washing outside, even it's only for a wee while. As others have already said if the ground is dry your laundry should dry and even if it's only half dry when you bring it in, it's still worth the effort.

RosaMundi27 · 12/10/2025 17:58

Never, I line dry all year for the freshness and lovely smell. I do have to finish them off on radiators in the winter, and I use a dri buddy as well. But nothing beats line drying imo.

mum2jakie · 12/10/2025 18:01

All year round! I've just brought a load in. Most is dry. A few thicker tops might need to go back out again tomorrow. Smells lovely 😍

Just about to admit defeat for today and bring mine in. Will have to go on the clothes 🐴🐴. I've done a bit of reading and now think a dehumidifier is the way forward in winter. I don't have and don't want a tumble dryer.
