When do you give up line drying for the year?

How do you decide when to give up line drying for the year? I managed to dry about 90% of this weeks laundry but had to put the rest in the dryer to finish off. I had been hoping for a bit of sun but it never really came out. Looks even worse over the next few weeks so should probably give up but we have a small house and no space to dry stuff indoors without tripping over it. I would put everything in the dryer over winter but have quite a bit of stuff that says not to and obviously woollens etc.

Never! If it's not raining the washing goes out.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 12/10/2025 18:08

Ours goes out if the sun is out and/or it's breezy. The tumble dryer only gets used for towels and bedding.

pumpkinscake · 12/10/2025 18:12

Never, it will dry even in winter if there's a breeze, usually

Mine was out all day today and didn’t dry, and it hasn’t rained all week so not related to the dry ground thing

I always give the washing another spin before drying at this time of year. Most wash cycles spin on either 800 or 1200, so if you've got a 1400 option that will get more water out so it doesn't take as long to dry.

And my darling mum used to say if the paths have dried up the washing will dry. She was right.

HauntedBungalow · 12/10/2025 18:22

I just use a dryer all the time.

BunnyRuddington · 12/10/2025 18:24

We’ve had a very misty day here, didn’t clear till after lunch but I don’t have a dryer so it goes out if it can usually.

mizu · 12/10/2025 18:25

I’ve had a load out today - bedding - and one yesterday. Neither completely dry but almost. No tumble here so clothes 🐴 it is. Smells lovely!

Will put it out again for the next few weeks if the weather is dry. If I didn’t work full time and wasn’t out of the house all day, I’d do it for longer but mid winter, I don’t.

CarpetKnees · 12/10/2025 18:26

Never say never, but there's a strong correlation between when the heating starts coming on, and it being unlikely to dry outside. So, round about this time of year.

Nothing dries when it's not sunny so I've pretty much stopped now. It's based on the weather though so I may do the odd load if it's warm enough.

It does here. We've had things dry overnight in the middle of winter if it's windy enough!

We put washing out all year round if the conditions are right. It hangs in the utility over a radiator to finish off if it doesn't fully dry.

Thissickbeat · 12/10/2025 18:32

I don't. I have a washing line pole ro make sure the washing stays in the sun and breeze.
Waistbands and thicker items popped on the airer to dry overnight.
I just have to watch the weather forecast all week to plan what I'm washing and when.

MyDogLikesKayaking · 12/10/2025 18:33

There was a clip on our local news last winter about this. Basically said if it’s dry weather and the temperature is above 5 degrees Celsius then it should dry. I followed that and only used the tumble dryer a few times in the last year. I plan doing my washing around the weather forecast!
There’s only two of us though, so we only have 2/3 loads a week.

TheCraicDealer · 12/10/2025 18:34

Last time I had anything on the line was early September. The weather has been so changeable here and although I WFH I don’t have a window at my desk so can’t keep an eye out to bring laundry in if needed. I also don’t have the time or inclination to rehang stuff if it’s still damp. Smalls, pyjamas etc go through the tumble drier.all year round anyway, and I have a heated airer and normal clothes horse. Between those and a dehumidifier our washing is dry in a day. I do hang a lot outside in the spring/summer as there’s nothing like the sun to lift stains out and with two young kids I need all the help I can get in that department!

familyissues12345 · 12/10/2025 18:39

Funnily enough, I put the cover over the washing line today, so that’ll be it until March/April.

We used to leave it out longer in our previous house, but indoor airer space was lacking. Now we have a decent sized spare room so I use that.

Moominmoko · 12/10/2025 18:44

I don't. With 5 kids the washing line can never get a rest!

This past week I did start tumble drying the school uniforms but everything else can have a shot on the like then come inside to air overnight if its still damp.

NotThisBollocksAgain · 12/10/2025 18:49

Mostly given up on outdoor drying over the last few weeks, we did put some of the dogs blankets on the line today as it has been sunny but we can't risk clothes not drying or we end up behind so it's run like a military operation!

PuppyMonkey · 12/10/2025 18:49

People on MN always seem to have magic washing that dries even if it’s minus five degrees. Grin

It never dries anywhere near enough at this time of year for me and I can’t be doing with the faff of putting it all out, having to check it’s not going to rain all day and then at the end of the day it’s still wet and you have to take it all in and put it on an airer or in the dryer when that’s what you should have done in the first place.

I’ve got a two tier airer arrangement of wall fixed airers over my big radiator in the utility room so I’m putting it all on those at the moment. Heating is coming on for half an hour or so in the morning and it’s drying nicely.

Puppycrate · 12/10/2025 18:51

I pretty much gave up at the end of August this year. It kept raining on and off, or things just weren’t drying properly and got that nasty smell

gottamoveon · 12/10/2025 18:52

As long as there is good wind outside (and no rain), it will dry all year round but needs putting out first thing and taking in before the sun starts to go down.

Olive567 · 12/10/2025 18:52

Will line dry AYR. Don't have a tumble dryer. I do, however, have an excellent dehumidifier i can use if drying indoors as don't want the damp hanging around the house.

AngelofIslington · 12/10/2025 18:53

I downloaded an app after it being recommended on here. I would say it is very accurate for drying times
Laundry Timer Drying Times

SixSeven · 12/10/2025 18:54

It’s been sunny all day here and I’ve got a duvet pretty much dry (an actual duvet, not just the cover) so five mins in the tumble and it’ll be good to put away.

I hang things out all year round if it’s not damp or rainy, luckily our garden gets warmed up at the slightest hint of sunshine.

Hatty65 · 12/10/2025 18:56

All year round, providing it's not raining. We live by the sea and there is generally a breeze, so it will dry.

SnowBunting · 12/10/2025 18:56

If I could, I’d hang it out on any dry breezy days through autumn and winter, but I live in a village that isn’t connect to the gas mains, so everyone has an oil boiler and a fireplace or log burner. Oil is expensive so many of my neighbours use their fires daily, so the air outside usually smells of woodsmoke and in turn, makes the clothes smell. My next door neighbour in particular seems to have their fire going from 7amish right through to 8/9pm.

I like the smell, but not enough to want every item of clothing and bedding we own smell of it!
